Police get several tips in 1969 slaying of nun
July 10, 1994|By Robert A. Erlandson and Joe Nawrozki | Robert A. Erlandson and Joe Nawrozki,Sun Staff Writers

Four days after Sister Catherine disappeared, Joyce Helen Malecki, 20, of Lansdowne, vanished on a Christmas shopping trip in Glen Burnie. On Nov. 13, 1969, two hunters found her body in the Soldier Park training area of Fort Meade. Her hands had been tied behind her back, and she had been choked and stabbed in the throat.
Baltimore County police and FBI agents conferred last week to determine whether they could find similarities between the two unsolved slayings. They plan to continue meeting as the investigations proceed. The Malecki killing came under FBI jurisdiction because Fort Meade is a federal reservation.

Miss Malecki's body was discovered Nov. 13, 1969, at Fort Meade, two days after she disappeared and six days after Sister Catherine was reported missing.
Miss Malecki, 20, an office worker for a liquor distributor, had been stabbed in the throat and strangled.

County police reopened the Cesnik file this spring after a woman came forward with an account of sexual abuse and murder. Now the Malecki file is being reviewed for possible similarities.

It is an FBI case because Miss Malecki's body was found on federal property. Special Agent John Huntley, of the Annapolis office, confirmed that agents met with county detectives, but he declined to disclose any details of the discussion.
Who Killed Sister Cathy?
Baltimore, City Paper
By Tom Nugent | Posted 1/5/2005
On Nov. 13, 1969, six days after Sister Cathy Cesnik vanished, not to be found murdered for two long months, a second young woman—20-year-old Joyce Malecki—was found strangled and stabbed to death in a small creek located on the U.S. Army’s Fort Meade military base in Anne Arundel County, only a few miles from where Cesnik’s body would later turn up. That crime also has never been solved.

Malecki, a secretary for a liquor distributor in the Baltimore area, had been abducted from the parking lot of an E.J. Korvette’s department store in Glen Burnie. After disappearing around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11, Malecki resurfaced the following morning with her hands tied behind her back, lying face down in the Little Patuxent River at the military base. According to the autopsy, she had been strangled and stabbed several times in the throat; cause of death was strangulation.

Joyce Malecki's name is mentioned at the end of an article on Fox News online, May 11 about a dead priest's DNA being extracted in connection with the investigation of the death of Sister Catherine Ann Cesnik. Sorry I'm not computer oriented enough to post a link.

It's sad that "The Keepers" didn't draw much new information out about this case or Joyce Malecki. Bumping just in case.

Since it is considered a federal case, is there any information that is accessible by the public? :)

I believe Abby of the Keepers has been trying for three years under the FOIA but has gotten nowhere, especially now that's it's being considered an active case. Joyce went to the church, St Clement's, where Maskell 'served' & attended summer camps where he was present, so there's a connection. To what extent, no one knows.

Joyce Malecki, murdered 1969

Anne Arundel County police said they've received numerous calls about a 1969 murder investigation at Fort George G. Meade after it was highlighted in the Netflix series "The Keepers."

Lt. Ryan Frashure, a police spokesman, issued a statement saying the department had received inquiries regarding the murder of 20-year-old Joyce Malecki, who police said had been stabbed in the throat and strangled. Her body was found at Fort Meade on Nov. 13, 1969.

"The Keepers" focuses primarily on the murder of Sister Catherine Ann Cesnik, a 26-year-old nun in Baltimore County who was reported missing six days before Malecki's body was found.

But the first episode of the series links the two murders. Both Cesnik's and Malecki's bodies were found in wooded areas with their cars abandoned.

Baltimore County detectives and FBI agents explored possible links between the two murders.

While Malecki's body was found at Fort Meade, the police department said because the military base is federal property, the case is being handled by the FBI.

"There is information circulating among (online) blogs and websites that state the Joyce Malecki murder investigation was at some point in time handed over to the Anne Arundel County Police Department by the Federal Bureau of Investigation," the department wrote in a statement. "This is not an accurate statement."

The FBI released this statement: "FBI Baltimore continues to pursue any and all investigative leads in the Joyce Malecki murder investigation. The Netflix documentary, "The Keepers," is rightfully bringing attention to the senseless and unsolved murders of Sister Cathy Cesnik and Joyce Malecki. As in all cold case homicides, it is never too late to contact law enforcement authorities if you know anything about the crime. The FBI in Baltimore can be contacted by calling 410-265-8080."

Here's a link to the Podcast "The Crime Journal". It's produced by the Anne Arundel PD and features cold cases, including Joyce's.

Some have speculated that LE is looking at serial killer Samuel Little as the one responsible for Joyce's murder. They're looking at some other cold cases from that time period who may have also been victims of Little.

Joyce Malecki was 20 years old when she disappeared and then was found murdered in 1969.

Next week her body will be exhumed by the FBI, Malecki's brother Darryl Malecki tells WMAR-2 News.

Malecki's murder was brought up in the Netflix documentary "The Keepers" in 2017, which detailed the disappearance and murder of Sister Catherine Cesnik.

We spoke with Nugent by phone about the plan to exhume Malecki's body.

"I'm amazed and very pleased," Nugent said.

He's hoping this will lead to a revelation that will bring peace to Malecki's family.

"They never did stop trying to solve this," Nugent said. "The idea that they might find out what happened is wonderful for them."

Father Joseph Maskell, who served as guidance counselor at Archbishop Keough in the 1960s and 1970s, has been accused of sexually assaulting dozens of victims.

A WJZ investigation revealed many of those victims confided in Sister Cesnik just before her shocking murder.
