Robert F. Kennedy’s Granddaughter Maeve McKean, 8-Year-Old Son Identified As Missing Boaters In Chesapeake Bay
As the search for two missing boaters in the Chesapeake Bay continues Friday, we’re learning that the missing boaters are members of the Kennedy family.

The missing boaters are 40-year-old Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, and her eight-year-old son Gideon.
...
Maryland DNR officials said the pair were reported missing around 4:49 p.m. Thursday near Herring Bay in Shady Side. According to officials, they had paddled out to retrieve a ball and were unable to paddle back to shore.

Watchstanders with the Coast Guard got word from the Maryland State Police that two people were seen struggling to return to shore in a canoe and they were not seen again. A man had called 911 from the Columbia Beach community pier where he saw the boaters drifting in the Bay.

At approximately 7:00 p.m., an overturned canoe, matching the approximate description of the one which the pair were in, and a paddle was located near Deale, Maryland, according to Anne Arundel County Fire.

From the article:

“The grandson and adult daughter of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend are presumed dead after the pair's canoe apparently capsized in the Chesapeake Bay, Townsend said Friday.

In a statement issued Friday night, Townsend said the search for her daughter, 40-year-old Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, and 8-year-old grandson, Gideon, was now a recovery effort.“

Husband has posted a message on Facebook. So sad, it's now a recovery effort. What a sad situation.

In his Facebook post, David explained that he and Maeve had decided to take their children to a family lakehouse in Shady Side, Maryland to give them more space to play during the coronavirus lockdown.

'Maeve and Gideon were playing kickball by the small, shallow cove behind the house, and one of them kicked the ball into the water. The cove is protected, with much calmer wind and water than in the greater Chesapeake. They got into a canoe, intending simply to retrieve the ball, and somehow got pushed by wind or tide into the open bay,' David stated in his post.

About half an hour later, the mother and son were spotted far from the shore by a neighbor, and the police were promptly called.

'After that last sighting, they were not seen again. The Coast Guard recovered their canoe, which was capsized and miles away, at approximately 6:30 yesterday evening,' David somberly stated.

RIP and condolences to the family. A terrible loss.

There was still a chance, when he wrote that post, that they could still be alive, albeit a small chance it was still a chance. Yet his post is written in the past tense. Wouldn’t a spouse/parent still be in shock and denial at that point and hang onto the slightest hope that his beloved family members are still here? It’s written as if they’ve been gone for quite some time. I’m still trying to figure out why such a smart lady who was such a good mother would risk going on a kayak in 30 mile an hour winds with her child and no life jackets. For a ball? Is that odd or am I just over thinking it?

It may not have been that windy in the small, calm, shallow cove where they were. The wind or an undercurrent likely pushed them into the open bay. She likely thought it was a quick, simple trip to retrieve the ball, not a big trip out in the canoe. I think it's unfortunate and heartbreaking, but not all that odd imo.

Here are some photos of the house where you can see the cove. The winds that day were strong, so I agree, likely more current than she expected and since the news stated they "just popped into" a canoe, they likely weren't wearing life vests. So tragic and so senseless. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/5313-Dennis-Point-Ln-Shady-Side-MD-20764/36146697_zpid/

Question: who reported them missing? It sounds as though the first alarm was a call from someone on land who saw them in the canoe, struggling to return to shore. There are a few other questions I have.

Maybe I’m crazy, but this story pings.

I agree with you. It's so sad :(.

Water moves. That's scary. If it were a lake they would have been okay! This goes into the ocean so you have to be careful, because it fools you, it pulls you out and it can be fast. Just a big big mistake on her part. So sad. This could happen to anyone.
