Nearly a month since a second grade teacher went missing from Greenbelt, Maryland, family members, students and staff came together for a vigil, holding out hope for her safe return.

Mariame Toure Sylla was last seen July 29 going for a walk at Schrom Hills Park. A family member who lives with Sylla reported her missing the next day. An exhaustive search of the park did not provide clues about her disappearance.

Heartbreaking news. And oh why why why did he have to decapitate her?

Thankfully there were cameras to help ID him or he might still be out there. From the article above:

"During the investigation, police said investigators examined security video from the scene that showed a pickup truck going to and from the area where her body was found. This led them to identify Harold Landon III as a suspect and make an arrest."

Also "Landon was taken into custody on August 1 on an unrelated assault charge" - wondering what that was about? It seems that he was really on a violent tear and I won't be surprised if he turns out to be connected to the other body found a mile away (in the article upthread).

It is odd that Ms Sylla went missing on July 29th, her body was found on Aug 1st, this suspect was arrested on Aug 1st and then Ms Sylla’s adult son was arrested and held without bond, for traffic and court violations, just a few days later. Early reports said he reported his mother missing but now reports are saying a family friend, living in the house, reported her missing the next day.

Why was the murder suspect in that particular neighborhood park? Greenbelt and Clinton are 20+ minutes apart, on the interstate. Beyond the horrific outcome, something is very wrong or off with this case.

The investigation led police to identify 33-year-old Harold Francis Landon III of University Park as a suspect in her murder, police said. Landon was allegedly in the park when Sylla was abducted and later identified through his vehicle, the police chief said.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine Sylla's cause of death, police said. Investigators are also working to determine where and when she was murdered. Her remains were discovered about 18 miles south of her last known location.

Horrifying. :(

Human remains found atop rocks near a pond in the 7300 block of Old Alexandria Ferry Road in Clinton on Aug. 1 were decapitated at the collar, missing a neck and head, and bilaterally amputated at both knees and shoulders, charging documents for Landon said.

An autopsy was performed the following day, and although the final results are still pending, the Prince George’s County Police Department DNA Lab said Sylla’s blood is consistent with blood from the dismembered remains.

Landon’s residence was searched on Aug. 31, police said, where officers found several power tools, including a reciprocating saw that appeared consistent with Sylla’s decapitation and cutting injuries.

Charging documents revealed that on July 31, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a witness saw a man in a white pickup truck at the Clinton pond dumping an item where Sylla’s remains would later be found, before cleaning his hands in the pond water. The witness was able to photograph the man and his truck, which Landon later identified as himself during a police interview.

Surveillance footage from the area obtained by police also corroborated the witness’s observations.

Police also said that Landon’s phone records revealed him to have been in the Greenbelt park at the same time Sylla was abducted, and near the Clinton pond at the time her remains had been dumped.

Capital punishment was abolished via the legislative process on May 2, 2013, in the U.S. state of Maryland.

Sylla’s disappearance prompted community searches and prayer vigils in the weeks since she was reported missing.

“To all of the young people who love Miss Sylla, who we’ve heard from over the last few weeks, the second-grade students that she taught … we express our condolences and grief to them,” Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said at Friday’s briefing. “To have a beloved member of our community taken away from us in this way is just so devastating.”

Wow @ the witness who saw the suspect at the pond and actually took photos.

I wonder what possessed Landon to not only abduct, but go to these efforts in dismembering the victim.

RIP, Ms. Sylla.

Yes, why would the suspect dismember her? I cannot tell from the article, but we’re all of her remains found? Because then it really doesn’t make sense to dismember someone but then dump it all in the same place.

It doesn’t appear all remains were found at the location. Such a horrific crime.

The gruesome details

Human remains found atop rocks near a pond in the 7300 block of Old Alexandria Ferry Road in Clinton on Aug. 1 were decapitated at the collar, missing a neck and head, and bilaterally amputated at both knees and shoulders, charging documents for Landon said.

An autopsy was performed the following day, and although the final results are still pending, the Prince George’s County Police Department DNA Lab said Sylla’s blood is consistent with blood from the dismembered remains.

Court documents say that Landon tried to stab his ex-girlfriend and her friend. The two were able to get the knife away from Landon and flee. The documents say Landon already had a protective order that forbade him from going near the woman.

That happened the same day Sylla's body was found.

When Landon was arrested, he was seen in a white pick-up that investigators say was the same vehicle seen driving at the pond.

Investigators obtained cellphone records for Landon. They said the records show Landon and Sylla were both in the Schrom Hills Recreation Center on July 29 – the day she vanished – around 7 p.m., an hour before she was last seen.

Investigators say Landon's phone records also placed him at the pond on July 31, the day before Sylla's body was found.

The sister of a Prince George's County third grade teacher who was murdered and dismembered by an apparent stranger says her family's devout Muslim faith demands forgiveness, even in such extreme circumstances.

“It’s difficult but we have to forgive," said Fati Toure, sister of victim Mariam Sylla in an exclusive interview with WUSA9. “Mariam is fine where she is, because she is with God."

Toure, who is from Ivory Coast, was preparing Wednesday for a funeral Friday at the Diyanet Center mosque in Lanham. She said she is coping with the horrible murder of her beloved sister through a lens of religion.

Mariame Toure Sylla, a 2nd grade teacher from Greenbelt, Maryland, was laid to rest Friday following her devastating disappearance and a desperate, weeks-long search. A week ago, police announced that her remains had been found and a suspect was in custody. They believe the killing was random.

This article from WTOP describes photos of Landon as part of the evidence against him.

“Jonathan Church, with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s, said several photos of Landon taken near where the remains were discovered in Clinton are another key piece of evidence.

One of the photos was taken by the witness who saw Landon dumping things near the pond, according to authorities. The others came from traffic cameras and a surveillance camera from inside a service station on the trail leading away from where the remains were dumped.”

“Ms. Sylla was a beloved teacher and member of the Greenbelt community,” Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz said. “Her murder is tragic. We hope the arrest of Landon provides some comfort to her family and all who knew and loved her.”
