Thinking of Jason today. I hope he's safe somewhere out there and will come back home soon.

Oh no, how terribly sad...I hope he has his answers now and either joined his son or is watching over him now wherever Jason might be.

Eternal unrest: A heartbroken father died never knowing what happened to his missing son

On Jan. 12, 2012, Doug Reil was awakened early in the morning by his son, who told him, not for the first time, his theory about the federal government conspiring to overcharge people for prescription drugs.

Jason Reil, 33 at the time, felt it was his responsibility to find the truth. Agitated and unfocused without the antipsychotic medication he’d stopped taking to treat schizophrenia, Jason told his dad, “I gotta go for a walk.”

“He was itching to get going,” Doug said in 2013. “I said, ‘Jason, promise me you’ll take your medications today and call your doctor and tell them what you told me.’ He said, ‘Yeah, I’ll do that.’”

Doug never saw his son again. In June 2014, just 57 years old, Doug died, heartbroken, depressed and tired.

“I think at that point he was just giving up,” Doug’s sister-in-law, Tammy, said recently. “He was so tired. He didn’t want to do it anymore.”

In memory of Doug, his brother, Ken Reil and Ken’s wife Tammy Charles-Reil, have renewed the search. Although Ken and Tammy now live in South Carolina, this weekend, friends will distribute fliers throughout midcoast Maine offering $500 for for any information that directly leads to locating Jason.

This article almost made me cry...So sad. His poor father.

I've been following this case for 5 years now. I truely hope there will be answers soon.

January 2024

After disappearing without a trace nearly 12 years ago, the family of Jason Reil is asking friends and loved ones to leave their porch lights on tonight.
It's symbol of hope for any information about Reil will finally lead to a break in the case that has gone cold. Reil, who would have turned 45 years old Jan. 12, was last seen on surveillance footage picking up his medications at a drug store in Brunswick.

Detective Sgt. Billy Moir has worked on the case since the beginning. He said authorities haven't ruled out anything, including foul play.

Details of Disappearance

Reil was last seen in Brunswick, Maine on January 12, 2012. He had spent the night with his father and was talking about government conspiracies. At 6:00 a.m., he woke up and his father asked him to take his medication and call his doctor, and he agreed to do so.

Reil then left to go take a walk, never returned and has never been heard from again. He left behind his cellular phone, eyeglasses, keys, jacket and gloves, but he may have taken his wallet. He has never been heard from again.

His debit card was used at a local Rite-Aid drugstore on January 18, so he may still be in the area. He has been known to hitchhike and had dropped out of sight for a day or two at a time before, but never for this long. He lived in an apartment on Federal Street at the time of his disappearance.

Reil may be living in homeless shelters or on the streets. He is an artist and a poet. His case remains unsolved.
