Adult human remains found in Unity stream, police say

Kayakers discovered the remains of what appears to be an adult male in the Sandy Stream in Unity last Friday, according to a Maine State Police spokesman.

State police detectives collected the remains and have consulted with the State Medical Examiners Office, McCausland said in a news release. According to McCausland, the remains appear to have been in the stream for several years.

My guesses are either Jeremy Alex or Richard Salman. Either way, I hope this discovery gives a family closure.

Thank you. Jeremy was my 1st thought and I couldn’t remember his name and had to go Zoom so no time to look. I’m not familiar with Richard so will go check that out.

The location of the remains is quite close to both men by car but not so much on foot which it sounds like they both were. I think Jeremy was closer if the last sighting in Jackson was indeed him. Looks like 4 hrs+/- walking. Certainly doable. They said the remains match no missing reports but maybe they’re just waiting for a positive ID? I would certainly expect him to be on their radar.

Hopefully he'll be identified and returned home to his loved ones quickly.

June 3, 2020 Katharine England

State Police are investigating the discovery of human remains in Sandy Stream in Unity. The discovery was made by kayakers last Friday. They contacted the Waldo Sheriff's Office. State Police Detectives collected the remains and have consulted with the State Medical Examiner’s office. The remains appear to be an adult man and likely have been in the stream for several years. Detectives, Game Wardens and State Police Evidence Technicians conducted searches of the area this week and more are planned, both in the stream and in the immediate area. Investigators also have reviewed missing persons cases on file, but there is no obvious match. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call State Police in Augusta at 207-624-7076.

A little geographical information and photos for reference.

McCausland couldn’t confirm the exact location that the remains were found or the conditions of the water in the area.

There’s very easy and slow currents, a sandy rocky bottom — not dangerous by any means,” O’Herin said in a phone interview Wednesday. “I know there are places along the stream where there are deeper pools … it’s quite a meandering stream.”

O’Herin said that the Hills to Sea Trail, a 47-mile trail that connects Unity Village to City Point in Belfast, intersects with the stream at the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, located at 294 Crosby Brook Road. At that location, hikers must cross the stream to continue on the trail, according to O’Herin.

I'm fairly certain this article is referencing these remains. This article states they are adult male remains, and so do subsequent articles.

The stream in which the remains were found intersects a trail that runs from Unity to Belfast. I wasn't able to find any MP cases from the immediate area. Here are a couple I found that were in the general area but not super close by, to consider:

Jeremy Theodore Alex-I suppose he could have taken the trail from Belfast to Unity The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)
John Malloch was the closest MP I could find to where the remains were found
The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)
Louis Hogan -this would be along his potential flight path

It's possible these remains belong to someone who hasn't been reported. There's also a popular fair held in Unity each year and Unity college is nearby, so it could very well be someone from away.

For reference, this is where Unity, Maine is. Roughly halfway between Augusta and Bangor.

There were two men from Mass who went missing in Maine in the 80s when they came here to collect some money. The vehicle they drove here was found in the Bangor Mall parking lot, but their destination was north of Bangor; Unity is southwest. But I suppose it could be one of them, they fit the age range at the time they went missing. They're not listed in NamUs under Maine, but Massachusetts.
John Joyce - Missing Since 1982
From Maine State Police: John Joyce, dob 6-15-49 and William Garlick, dob 3-18-55, left Worcester, MA on 9-13-82 en route to Alton, Maine to collect a $22,000 debt. They were operating a black 1980 Corvette, Mass. Registration 512-EVZ. The Corvette was found in the parking lot of the Bangor Mall in Bangor, Maine on 9-14-82. The ignition was torn apart, as well as the interior of the vehicle. A man's wallet, belonging to William Garlick, was found on the seat of the vehicle. John Joyce and William Garlick have not been seen since. Contact: Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit - North, 198 Maine Avenue, Bangor, Maine 04401. The thing that causes me to raise an eyebrow about the Jeremy Ted Alex possibility is the "credible" reports of a sighting by two different witnesses in September 2004 (five months after his disappearance) in Jackson. That's getting closer to Unity. Here is a map with the noted sightings in relation to Sandy Stream in Unity (marker is placed on Main Street bridge over the stream, I don't think it was reported exactly where the remains were discovered).

Also, there is another thread about this UID.

These remains are now on NamUs.

Thanks for the update. Did they happen to mention if these remains were still unidentified?
They didn't. I'm assuming they are. I'll ask next time I submit another match

What's everyone's thoughts on Richard Leroi Harosin. He is missing from the Augusta VA hospital. PMI is close and so is age. The VA hospital is less than 40 miles from where JD was found.
