Expert: Chloroform Levels In Casey's Trunk 'Shocking'

Researcher Testifies About Air In Trunk Of Car

Vass gave jurors in the trial a crash course in the stages of human decomposition.

UPDATED: 1:22 pm EDT June 6, 2011

Forensic testing on a carpet sample from Casey's trunk showed the presence of chloroform at a level that was "shockingly high," a scientist testified Monday in her capital murder trial.

Laser-based testing also seemed to indicate that decomposition had occurred in the trunk, as it showed high levels of inorganic elements such as calcium. Such inorganic elements are consistent with a decomposing body, Vass testified.

Prosecutors allege Anthony used chloroform on Caylee and suffocated her by putting duct tape over the little girl's mouth and nose.

Vass' testimony was frequently punctuated by objections from Baez, nearly all of them were overruled by Judge Perry

Chloroform Levels In Casey's Car Leave Experts "Shocked"

A researcher testified on Monday that he can detect human decomposition in the air from Casey's trunk on day 22 of her murder trial.
Arpad Vass, a researcher at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was the first witness called on Monday on day 22 of Casey's trial.
The state is also expected to call its computer expert to testify about computer searches from Casey’s home, including the words chloroform and neck breaking.
Prosecutor Jeff Ashton asked Vass to describe the difference between the smell of human decomposition and animal decomposition.
"Animals tend to have a more muskier scent. Domesticated animals like a pig have a much sweeter scent than humans," Vass replied.

'Shocking' Chloroform Levels In Casey's Trunk researcher Testifies About Air In Trunk Of Car

"Snip" UPDATED: 5:27 pm EDT June 6, 2011

Defense Subpoena

Defense's attempt to subpoena Vass' database ended quickly Monday after an objection from prosecutors.

Baez attempted to subpoena Vass earlier in the day.

After proceedings concluded for the day, prosecutor Jeff Ashton objected and argued that Vass was exempt from the subpoena since he was present under an interstate subpoena from Tennessee.

The defense then voluntarily withdrew the subpoena, but indicated it wanted to call Vass as an expert witness of its own after the state had rested.

Trial proceedings continue at 9 a.m. Tuesday June 7.

Vass said Detective Yuri Melich first contacted him to analyze the trunk of Casey's car. He sent the Orange County Sheriff's Office air pumps, or "traps," to collect air samples from the trunk, and later received a plastic bag with the samples in it.

He said he used a device called a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer to analyze the samples and detect human composition. He said they also looked into an older car taken from a junk yard for comparison as a "control" vehicle.

Vass said he and his team identified 51 chemical components from the carpet of the car trunk. Of those, 41 were consistent with human decomposition, including butyric acid, the first compound found in human decomposition, in the carpet.

He also said there was a "shockingly high" level of chloroform found in the air sample, saying he had never seen that in his 20 years of work. Prosecutors showed the jury a graph, asking Vass to point out a peak showing the level of chloroform found in the carpet sample.

Vass recalled jumping back after opening the can of air. He said he could not believe such a tiny can could contain such a strong odor. He went on to say the odor was consistent with what he knows to be the smell of human decomposition, and went as far as to say he could not think of anything other than a dead and decomposing body that would explain the results he got from the samples he analyzed.

During cross-examination, he did admit did not know the chemical breakdown of items in the trash found in Casey's car. But Vass said if you eliminate all the overlapping compounds from the trash and gasoline from George Anthony's gas cans, there were still 10 compounds consistent with decomposition.

Technical testimony draws repeated objections from defense "Snip" By Walter Pacheco, Orlando Sentinel

Explanations of human decomposition, odor of decay and other highly scientific testimony continued to dominate the first-degree murder case against Casey Anthony today.

Dr. Arpad Vass, found that while not conclusive, nearly all the compounds present in early human decomposition were detected in the trunk of Casey Anthony's Pontiac Sunfire.

Dr. Arpad Vass's testimony is highly technical. Vass has given testimony about what factors impact the rate of decomposition after death. Temperature is the most important factor followed by water content, pH and oxygen.

Muscle and skin breaks down into so-called "volatile fatty acids," said Vass.

Chloroform discussion
Vass said he and his research team were "shocked" about the "unusually high" chloroform levels from an air sample related to a piece of carpet from the Pontiac.

"We have never seen chloroform at that level before," he said.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Day 23 of Casey Anthony's murder trial, one day after groundbreaking evidence was introduced into the trial continues at 9AM.
Sheaffer said cross-examination of Vass failed to discredit the doctor’s expert credentials.

“Baez could not shake it, and at the end of the day, I think the jury found him credible and that there was a dead body in the trunk of that car,” he said.

Prosecutors say Casey Googled how to make chloroform 3 months before the murder. Baez tried to get Vass to say the stain in Casey's trunk could have been caused by rotting meat, which wasn't even found in the bag of trash in the trunk.

“If you were eating a piece of hamburger it'd have to be raw and with a bag over your head. We're talking several pounds of meat,” said Vass.

A garbage bag found in Casey Antony's car is the focus of testimony on day 23 of her murder trial.

Deputy Jason Forgey was asked to explain how his dog, Gerus, was trained and what the dog detected in the case.

Casey's defense attorney, Jose Baez, suggested Tuesday that Bloise altered crucial evidence.

Baez questioned Bloise about why he dried out garbage found in a bag in Casey's car. It included empty packages of pizza, lunch meat, frozen chicken and cheese, among other things.

Dr.Vass told jurors he was shocked to find 10,000 times the amount potentially deadly chloroform than would normally be expected in human decomposition alone.

Jason Forgery, took the stand after Rickenbach.

Earlier Tuesday, crime scene technician Gerardo Bloise testified about a bag of trash that sat in Anthony's trunk for weeks during the heat of a Florida summer

Jurors hear testimony on chloroform residue, training of cadaver dogs

Jurors heard about a variety of evidence from several state witnesses in the first-degree murder case against Casey Anthony today, ranging from chloroform residue detected on items in her car to garbage found in the trunk.

Rickenbach, told jurors chloroform is a volatile substance that doesn't stay around long. He told prosecutor Jeff Ashton he would have expected the chloroform to dissipate by the time the fabric was tested.

"I was surprised to even get any results for chloroform," he said.

Rickenbach also told Ashton he detected an odor when he opened the can containing the fabric from the spare tire cover. But he was not allowed to further discuss the odor.

Forgey told jurors that Gerus is trained to detect human decomposition, alerted to the trunk of Anthony's car and to a spot in the Anthony family's back yard.

Baez asked Forgey why Gerus' inspections weren't videotaped, the deputy explained they very rarely were.

Forgey noted that the smell of death, which he is familiar with, was obvious from Anthony's car.

Bag of trash, cadaver dogs top latest testimony against Casey Anthony
"Snip" By Jacqueline Fell, Adam Longo and Kelli Cook, Team Coverage

Gerardo Bloise
testify about a garbage bag found in Casey's Pontiac Sunfire. It's the same bag George Anthony said he found in the trunk when he picked up the car from a tow yard.
The jury saw several photos of the bag full of garbage, as well as the individual items inside the bag laid out on a table, including:

Various soft drink cans and bottles
Napkins and food wrappers
An empty box of cigarettes
A broken plastic coat hanger
A pizza box
A receipt from Fusion Ultra Lounge
A flier from Full Sail University, detailing orientation and registration
Bloise noted noted the bag smelled as "normal trash," and the odor of the garbage was different than the smell in the car trunk.

Dr. Arpad Vass Baez tried to ask if Vass misidentified the can from Monday because he is not used to handling evidence, since he works in a research lab, not a forensics lab. The prosecution objected, but Vass still confirmed he was not used to handling evidence.Dr. Michael Rickenbach Rickenbach, however, said he was surprised to have gotten any result at all. Normally, the chloroform would have evaporated. He also said the tire cover was sent to him in a cardboard box, which was not airtight, and would allow chloroform to leak out of it.

Jason Forgey Forgey said his full-service dog, Gerus, was trained to sit when detecting the "smell of death." The dog was also trained to recognize several scents, including a pseudo scent for a drowning victim, as well as to ignore certain scents, including ham bones, dumpsters, pizza and decomposing animals.

Forgey said Gerus signaled alerts in the trunk of Casey's car, as well as near Caylee's playhouse in the Anthonys' backyard.
