Courts get funding reprieve, won't be forced to close

Baez launched his attack using a PowerPoint presentation. His arguments focus on Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Baez says ORNL refused to turn over the decompositions database, chromatograms and validation tests.

Baez said Dr. Vass stands to "make millions and millions of dollars" if his decomposition odor database is allowed as evidence.

Defense attorney Sims floated the hypothetical scenario that high chloroform levels came from Caylee Marie's bathing suit.

Said Caylee went swimming in the pool of Tony Lazarro, on June 2, 2008 and that Casey placed her bathing suit in the trunk of her Pontiac Sunfire.

The defense today also questioned its forensic botanist, Dr. Jane Bock, who is being used to dispute Hall's findings.

Assistant State Attorney Jeff Ashton did not ask her a single question.

Judge throws out inmate's motions in Casey Anthony murder case

Jackson, 35, is serving time at a prison in Baraga, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections website. He was sentenced in July 2008.

Things, got off on the wrong foot for the defense this AM.
No one from the defense team informed the court they would need a video conference set up for a defense witness. So, Judge Belvin Perry put the court in a 30-minute recess to set up the equipment. The court resumed at 9:30am.

Wednesday's hearing was underway when Judge Perry got the news that an emergency loan was on its way from Tallahassee; $19.5 million to keep the courts running through the end of May.

Casey Defense Tries To Get Evidence Tossed Out

WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said that after listening to all the testimony and cross examination, he believes prosecutors now have the edge in convincing Judge Perry to allow the ground-breaking air test evidence, which comes from research scientist Dr. Arpad Vass, from the Oak Ridge Laboratories.

"The prosecutor will show there's no debate in the scientific community that Dr. Vass's methodology and findings are not generally accepted," Sheaffer said.

Judge Perry is expected to make a written ruling sometime later this week or next week.

Chloroform evidence
Baez said chloroform level evidence linked to the trunk of Anthony's car should be excluded because state witness Dr. Arpad Vass, who testified about that issue, is not a chemist and other experts disputed his findings.
Ashton, however, said the experts did agree on Vass' methodology. And all Vass said is that the chloroform level identified in his analysis was higher than what is normally seen in human decomposition.

Plant-root growth and remains

Hall wrote a report giving an estimate of how long Caylee's remains likely stayed in the heavily wooded spot where they were found in December 2008.


Assistant State Attorney Jeff Ashton said that the defense has its own expert dating the root growth at the recovery scene.


Stain in Anthony's car
Baez argued against the admissibility of a stain identified in the trunk of Anthony's car. He says tests show the stain was not "biological" in nature.

Ashton said the state's expert simply linked fatty acids to the stain that may be of human origin and he repeated that the defense presented no evidence strong enough to exclude information about the stain from coming in at trial.

Ashton said, the darkening of hair roots as a sign of decomposition after death has been recognized since 1988.

Attorneys found out quickly that Judge Belvin Perry is keeping everyone on a very short leash.

"All I really want to hear is argument so we can move on," Perry said. "Mr. Baez I will not tolerate any editorial comments. You can give $100 to the clerk's office, your choice, let me hear argument."

Jury selection for Anthony's murder trial is scheduled to begin May 9.

Perry said that if they are unable to seat a jury in another county, they will try to in Orange County.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An Orange County jury isn’t out of the question in the case against Casey Anthony, Judge Belvin Perry announced at a status hearing Friday.
Perry proposed that if he is unable to find a jury in another city, they will pick a jury in Orange County starting on May 17. Perry said he would hear any objections to that proposal next Friday afternoon.

Perry also pushed opening statements in the case back one day. If a jury is selected in the first week, Perry said opening statements would begin on May 17.

WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer believes after what he heard on Friday, that it's all coming in, even evidence that a heart sticker was placed on the duct tape over Caylee's face, though some of that evidence is gone.

Also during the hearing, Perry said that if they are unable to seat a jury in another county, they will try to in Orange County.

The hearing wrapped up at about 2:55pm. Perry said the hearing will resume on Friday the 15 of April at 1:30pm.

Sheaffer said if the defense backs off of calling the two witnesses before that, it could mean prosecutors got information strengthening their case from the doctors.
