Chris Coleman's attorneys file change of venue motion

KSDK -- Attorneys for Chris Coleman want his murder trial moved out of Monroe County and have filed a change of venue motion.

Coleman is accused of killing his wife Sheri and sons Gavin and Garret inside their Columbia, Illinois home last May.

His attorneys say it's impossible for him to get a fair trial in Monroe County because of all the media coverage surrounding the case.

Coleman murder trial: Jurors outside of Monroe County will hear case
BY GEORGE PAWLACZYK
News-Democrat

The trial of Christopher Coleman will take place in Monroe County, but the jurors will be brought to the courthouse in Waterloo from another county.

That was the crux of a court order issued Tuesday by 20th Judicial Circuit Judge Milton Wharton in response to a request by defense attorney John O'Gara for a change of venue because of massive pretrial publicity. The order did not specify which county would be used to supply jurors.

COLUMBIA, Ill. — Sheri Coleman is buried in Chester, Ill., with her two preteen sons. Her husband, Christopher Coleman, is jailed in Waterloo, awaiting trial in their murders before jurors to be picked in a jurisdiction far away.

The grisly drama of their lives has moved from the Columbia Lakes subdivision — except for the two-story reminder of where it played out one year ago.

Columbia neighbors dedicate memorial to slain Coleman family

KSDK

Wednesday marks a sad anniversary for the city of Columbia. It was one year ago that a mother and her two sons were found murdered in their home. Over the weekend, residents of the Columbia Lakes subdivision dedicated a new memorial to Sheri Coleman and her sons, Garett and Gavin.

Meanwhile, the board and residents dedicated a small memorial along the lake on May 1 to Sheri and her two sons. Two benches sit along the shoreline of the lake, under a small tree with a rock with a simple plaque. “It’s a way toward closure," Walla said.

A candlelight service is also scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Wednesday for Sheri Coleman and her sons at Bolm-Schuhkraft Park in Columbia. Meegan Turnbeaugh, a friend of Sheri Coleman, has been raising funds to build a pavilion honoring the family in Columbia. <snipped>

A Year Ago Today: Christopher Coleman Introduced Us To a New Kind of Monster

It was a bright sunny morning -- just like today -- when a year ago Christopher Coleman called the Columbia, Illinois, police.

The 32-year-old Coleman, an evangelical Christian and bodyguard for a televangelist, said he was at the gym for a pre-dawn workout and was concerned that his wife Sheri and their two young boys, Garett and Gavin, weren't answering the home phone.

Police arrived at Coleman's house at 6:52 a.m. on May 5, 2009, to find Sheri and the boys strangled to death and graffiti spray-painted on the walls of the home. Later police would discover that Coleman kept a mistress in Florida, and told the woman he would soon be leaving his wife to marry her.

Authorities would also discover that the email threats that Coleman said he had received from a mad-man bent on killing him and his family originated from Coleman's personal laptop computer.

Coleman has maintained his innocence. A trial is scheduled for later this year in Monroe County. Last month a judge agreed to bring in jurors from outside the St. Louis region on the belief that local residents may have already formed an opinion about Coleman.

Ya think?

Coleman murder trial to start Feb. 15

Posted: Friday, October 29, 2010 1:36 pm

WATERLOO -- Jury selection for the first-degree murder trial of Christopher Coleman will begin Feb. 15, Circuit Judge Milton Wharton said this afternoon.

Officials have not revealed from where they intend to pull jurors to decide whether Coleman killed his wife and two sons in their home in Columbia, Ill., in May 2009.

The judge ruled earlier that the proceedings will be in Monroe County Circuit Court here, but a jury will be brought in from elsewhere in Illinois because of heavy publicity about the case.

Judge weighs hearsay evidence in Coleman trial

Monroe County State's Attorney Kris Reitz said Sheri Coleman told friends that her husband beat her up, and texted at least two of them, saying: "Chris wants a divorce. He said me and my kids are in the way of his job. He told me he's leaving me for his job! But if Joyce (Meyer) finds out she will fire him. It got so bad I told Joyce. He was [angry] to say the least but that was the breaking point. She forced him into counseling."
