Couple faces 29 felony counts, life in jail in kidnapping
August 28, 2009/updated 1 hour ago

The Garridos are each facing charges of kidnapping someone under 14 years of age, kidnapping for sexual purposes, forcible rape and forcible lewd acts on a child.

The maximum penalty for both defendants would be life imprisonment.

Authorities were are looking into Garrido's possible connection to other crimes.

A search warrant was issued for Garrido's home in connection with killings that occurred in the 1990s, a spokesman for the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department said Friday. Pittsburg, California, police obtained the search warrant, said the spokesman, Jimmy Lee.

Dugard's presence behind Garrido's home since apparently went unnoticed in the neighborhood, where homes on one-fourth to one-half-acre lots typically sell for less than $200,000, said Kathy Russo, whose father has lived two houses away from the Garridos for 33 years.

"My dad said he never saw a young woman," Russo said, adding that her 94-year-old father considered Garrido to be a "kind of strange, reclusive, kind of an angry kind of guy."

She said the one-story house's backyard was obscured by trees and ringed by a wooden fence.

Neighbor spoke to Jaycee Lee Dugard through fence - San Jose ...

An Antioch resident whose backyard shares a fence with the Garrido property once spoke to a little girl through that fence, he said Friday.
She told him her name was Jaycee.

Patrick McQuaid, 27, was a child when he saw a blonde girl through the chicken wire fence that used to separate his Bown Lane backyard from the Garridos' yard. He said he believes it was around the summer of 1991, not long after Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped from a South Lake Tahoe bus stop.

"I thought she was pretty," McQuaid said.

After he learned Jaycee's name, McQuaid, who had never seen any children through the fence before, asked whether she lived there or was just visiting. He said she told him she was living there, but before he could ask more questions Phillip Garrido came out and took her into the house.

"I didn't think anything of it. I was young," McQuaid said.

Mystery surrounding kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard deepens
San Jose Mercury News

Sometime between the June morning she was yanked into a car near South Lake Tahoe in 1991 and this week when she surfaced alive with the man accused of taking her, Jaycee Dugard stopped thinking of Phillip Garrido as her kidnapper and saw him more as a husband, her step-father said Friday.

Even though she was raped within a month of the kidnapping, according to court records, and secretly housed in a backyard shed, Dugard, then 11 and now 29, apparently never told her two children she was kidnapped. When she greeted her mother at a tearful reunion this week, her first words were "Hi, Mom, I have babies."

"Jaycee has strong feelings with this guy," her stepfather, Carl Probyn, said Friday. "She really feels it's almost like a marriage."

That revelation was just one of the surprises to surface Friday as the mystery deepened of what happened to the little blonde, blue-eyed girl kidnapped on her way to school nearly two decades ago.

As Phillip Craig Garrido and his wife pleaded not guilty Friday to kidnapping an 11-year-old girl and imprisoning her as a sex slave for 18 years, police began picking through his house outside Antioch to determine whether there is evidence tying him to a string of prostitute killings in the 1990s.

Parole Officials Not Embarrassed By Garrido Deception

Although Phillip Garrido kidnapped Jaycee Dugard and raised a secret family under the noses of multiple parole agents in two jurisdictions, a California parole official defended the process.

"There's no doubt this criminal fooled a lot of jurisdictions for a long time," said Scott Kernan, and undersecretary at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. "I have no sense of embarrassment for my department. I think they acted appropriately."

A veteran federal probation officer who retired as a supervisor in Sacramento was stunned by the number of professionals fooled by Garrido.

"Anybody who's been working in the system for any period of time, you get to know the character and the traits," Robert Storey told News10. "Something should have alerted somebody," he insisted.

But Kernan pointed out that it was a California parole agent who ultimately helped solve the 18-year-old mystery when he became suspicious during a Wednesday interview with Garrido, who had come to the meeting with a woman who turned out to be Jaycee Dugard.

"I'm very proud of the officer and how our agency responded to this case," Kernan said.

The elder Garrido said the drugs changed him from a good boy, whom everybody loved, to a crazy person.

"He went on LSD and LSD killed him," Garrido said.

Speaking by phone interview with the Associated Press from his house in Brentwood, Manuel Garrido said he hasn't seen his son in years and has never been to the house where Phillip Garrido allegedly lived with the missing girl Jaycee Lee Dugard, their two children and his wife, Nancy Garrido.

Contra Costa Sheriff's Department Capt. Daniel Terry said police officers from the nearby city of Pittsburg executed a search warrant Friday at Phillip Garrido's Antioch home for clues in the unsolved slayings of several prostitutes in the area a decade ago.

By late Friday, Pittsburg police said they were searching to home for any links to unsolved cases in their area and were expected to remain there throughout the weekend.

Several of the murdered women's bodies were dumped near an industrial park where Garrido worked during the 1990s.

UC Cop: "Red Flags" Helped Crack Jaycee Case
August 29, 2009/7 Hours ago
<snipped>
Two UC Berkeley campus police staff felt something didn't ring true when they met Phillip Garrido, charged in the kidnapping and molestation of Jaycee Dugard.

Staffer Lisa Campbell said she met Phillip Garrido on Monday, Aug. 24, when he arrived at the campus police department to request a permit for an upcoming religious event on campus. When Campbell asked the nature of event, Garrido told her, "God's Desire."

Campbell said Garrido had two girls with him which she thought was odd. She also said Garrido was "acting manic, strange."

Her suspicions aroused, Campbell said she called Officer Allison Jacobs about the meeting she had with Garrido. Jacobs decided to run Garrido's name through law enforcement databases, which revealed he is a parolee and registered sex offender.

"Red flags went up," Jacobs said.

Jacobs said she didn't know at the time she was onto such a big case. She credited her training as a cop and with being a mom to lead her to ask the questions that opened up the investigation.

Stepfather: Jaycee Reunion "Going Good," But Slowly
August 29, 2009/7Hours ago
<snipped>
Carl Probyn said late Friday that wife Terry reported to him that everything was positive as Terry, Jaycee and Jaycee's two daughters reconnected in the wake of Jaycee's rescue from alleged kidnappers Phillip and Nancy Garrido.

"It's going good. It's going slow...they're trying to keep out of the media," Probyn said. "These girls are so fragile. They're trying to go the right direction...everything is about these girls and doing things the right way."

The family is believed to be in seclusion in a Bay Area home.

As for Jaycee's daughters, 15 and 11, Probyn said all he knows is that they're happy and were working with a team of experts.

Probyn, who remained in his southern California home during the reunion, said he looks forward to the day he can see Jaycee again face to face.

Officers executed a search warrant at Phillip Garrido's Antioch home for clues in the unsolved slayings, Contra Costa sheriff's Capt. Daniel Terry said.

Several of the murdered women's bodies were dumped near an industrial park where Garrido, a sex offender, worked during the 1990s.

Garrido and his wife, Nancy, were charged Friday with kidnapping 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991. Authorities said they held her and two children she had with Garrido as prisoners in a backyard encampment.

The couple pleaded not guilty to a total of 29 counts, including forcible abduction, rape and false imprisonment. A judge ordered them held without bail.

Phillip Garrido appeared stoic and unresponsive during the brief arraignment hearing. His wife cried and put her head in her hands several times.

Garrido Documents Claim He Received Gift from God
8/28/2009 3:33:00 PM

In documents accused kidnapper Phillip Garrido presented to the FBI, the man who reportedly confessed to abducting and holding Jaycee Lee Dugard for 18 years claims the ability to control sound with his mind.

The documents, obtained by KRON 4 News, paint a disturbing picture of a man who believes himself to have received a gift from God. Garrido writes that by using religion he was able to resist the urge to continue to be a sexual predator while he says he obtained special powers to allow him to make others hear voices.

"Because of my background I began to examine the issues of how certain behaviors cause a great deal of pain in myself and those who are victimized by this behavior especially our family and my wife," Garrido wrote. "Building from those personal experiences I prepared a way to deal with those issues in my own mind."

The documents include affidavits prepared by a private investigator of several people who claim to have witnessed Garrido "provide a demonstration at my place of business, controlling a voice or set of voices that are unearthly in nature." In the same document Garrido claims he has "clearly demonstrated the ability to control sound with my mind and have developed a device to for others to witness the phenomenon."

Some Neighbors Cashing In on Proximity to Garrido House

European journalists are reportedly offering thousands of dollars to the man who lives next door to the compound for interviews and a peek over the fence. KRON 4's Sarah Pihl says the British tabloid "The Sun" and a European organization called "Splash" reportedly paid for the access.

"I think that's disgusting," one neighbor told Sarah. "If anyone wants to be offering money they should be offering money to this poor woman and her two children after they've suffered. But to offer a neighbor money to go in their yard, that's terrible."

"I don't think that's right," another neighbor said. "That's taking advantage of something that's an unfortunate situation."

While it's considered unethical in America for journalists to pay for stories, it's considered a daily practice in many other parts of the world.

Jaycee Dugard's Mom Consulted Psychic
But many argue psychics can't help solve crimes
Updated: Saturday, 29 Aug 2009, 2:41 PM EDT

A psychic said that she predicted that kidnap victim Jaycee Lee Dugard would return home safely.

Dayle Schear, a Reno, Nev., psychic who has worked on high-profile cases like the O.J. Simpson case, was consulted by Dugard's mother, Terry Probyn, in 1991. KOLO-TV reports that Schear told Probyn , "I looked her in the eyes and I said please do not give up on this child...eventually she'll walk through the door, you're going to see her again."

KOLO reports that Schear provided Probyn with details on her daughter's confinement. " I described the general area and how she was being held. I said it was sexual...I knew she was being held at force and she could not get to a phone to call."

Benjamin Radford on LiveScience.com writes that psychics often tout their abilities to help solve crime cases, but that they usually give information so vague that it's useless. "If Shear's psychic powers told her that this poor girl was being kept in the most horrific conditions -- being subjected to continual sexual and physical abuse for nearly two decades -- then it's puzzling that Jaycee was not found 18 years ago."

Radford has a suggestion for those who claim psychic abilities to solve cases. "If they have the powers they claim, perhaps they should take a break from their TV appearances and lucrative lecture circuits to actually help find these and other desperate missing persons. "

Victims of repeated abuse suffer complex trauma
August 29, 2009/updated 4 hours, 15 minutes ago

For 18 years, a girl who was whisked away into a secret backyard compound was forced to grow up in isolation.

By the time authorities discovered Jaycee Lee Dugard, she was a 29-year-old mother of two who had spent more than half of her life in sheds. One of the alleged abductors, Phillip Garrido, is the father of her two daughters, according to police.

Garrido and his wife, Nancy, face 29 felony counts, including kidnapping for sexual purposes, forcible rape and forcible lewd acts on a child. They pleaded not guilty Friday. The maximum penalty for each defendant, if convicted, is life imprisonment.

Dugard, who disappeared from South Lake Tahoe, California, in 1991, faces a challenging road to recovery. Dr. Kerry Landry, a child psychiatrist in Durham, North Carolina, said that repeated abuse causes complex trauma.

"They can really feel like they have no control and there is no escape," Landry said.

Alleged kidnapper couple met while man was in prison

Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, met while he was in a federal prison serving time for abducting a different woman from South Lake Tahoe, California, and holding her captive in a storage unit, Nevada probation and parole officials said Friday.

Garrido's record as a registered sex offender began with a 1977 conviction on charges of kidnapping and rape of a South Lake Tahoe woman, the Nevada Department of Public Safety's Division of Parole and Probation said in a press release.

Garrido, then 25, "told the victim it wasn't intentional that he had taken her, but that it was her fault because she was attractive," according to the documents.

Garrido served 11 years of a 50-year sentence in Levenworth, Kansas.

Parole officials said he met his wife, Nancy, while he was in prison, but they didn't give details.

And Garrido apparently maintained a blog where he discussed talking to God and also claimed he could control sound with his mind.

The blog now has profanity-laced responses from people outraged over Phillip Garrido's alleged actions.
