Prosecutors: Peterson Tried To Put Hit On 3rd Wife

Brodsky said that he had heard talk about Peterson trying to hire someone to kill Savio, but said it was "nothing substantive." He added that they would investigate Glasgow's allegations.

Peterson, who is known for making smart-aleck remarks in the media, was much more subdued in court Friday. He hung his head as he left the hearing, and got into a van to go back to jail.

The former Bolingbrook sergeant finally understood the seriousness of his situation, Glasgow said.

Peterson "realizes there is no way out," he said.

Judge Won't Lower Peterson's $20M Bond After Prosecutors Say He Hired Hitman to Kill Wife

The $20 million bond keeping Drew Peterson behind bars on murder charges won't be lowered, a judge ruled Friday, after prosecutors argued that the ex-police sergeant hired someone to kill his third wife.

Peterson and his defense team were back in court in Joliet, Ill., to fight for a reduction in the hefty bond so that he could get out of jail while he awaits trial. That request was denied.

Prosecutors contend that the former Bolingbrook, Ill., officer hired someone to kill his third wife, Kathleen Savio.

Peterson is charged with murdering Savio and staging the death to look like an accidental drowning.

The $20 million bond keeping Drew Peterson behind bars on murder charges won't be lowered, a judge ruled Friday, after prosecutors argued the ex-police sergeant offered someone $25,000 to kill his third wife — but then did it himself.

Peterson also told a fellow officer just a few weeks before his wife Kathleen Savio was found in a bathtub that his life would be easier "if she was just dead," prosecutors said.

Peterson all jokes on radio show
May 28, 2009
<snipped>
No matter what he did to third wife Kathleen Savio or fourth wife Stacy Peterson, Drew Peterson wasn't killing anyone with his standup comedy routine on the radio Thursday.

Peterson, jailed and facing murder charges in connection with Savio's death, called in collect to Mancow Muller's show on WLS to tell some jokes.

Mancow mentioned that Peterson's attorney, Joel Brodsky, promised Peterson would deliver some of his comedic stylings over the phone.

Peterson gets credit for trying, but that's about it.

Peterson is due back in court June 17, and with any luck, might reprise his comedy act as he is led from a county paddy wagon, just as he did before his arraignment May 8.

Drew Peterson back in court over judge in high-profile murder case
Monday, Jun. 01, 2009
<snipped>
Drew Peterson is back in court for a hearing on whether yet another new judge should be appointed in the high-profile murder case.

The Will County state's attorney's office says the main issue Monday is defense lawyers' bid to replace Judge Carla Alessio-Policandriotes (pahl-ee-KAN'-dree-oh-tihs). Two weeks ago, she was picked to replace another judge at the prosecutor's request.

Prosecutors say other motions could also be dealt with Monday, including a state request to seal discovery.

Another new judge in ex-officer Drew Peterson case
POSTED: Monday, Jun. 01, 2009

There's another new judge in former Illinois police officer Drew Peterson's murder case.

Chief Judge Gerald Kinney granted a defense request Monday to replace Judge Carla Alessio-Policandriotes (pahl-ee-KAN'-dree-oh-tihs). The case will now be handled by Judge Stephen White.

It was only last month that Alessio-Policandriotes was named to replace another judge, that time at the prosecutor's request. Shortly afterward, she refused to reduce the defendant's $20 million bail.

A 3rd judge for the Drew Peterson case

Will County Chief Judge Gerald Kinney today assigned the case to Circuit Judge Stephen White.

Peterson, who has pleaded not guilty, appeared twice in court Monday; first before Judge Kinney and then later in front of White.

Dressed in a dark gray jail jersey and pants, and shackled and manacled, Peterson appeared sober and attentive. Aside from the media and lawyers, the hearings appeared to draw little interest.

Judge White scheduled a hearing for 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, to hear the prosecution's motion to seal discovery filings and an anticipated objection to the state's motion by the defense.

Brodsky To Oppose Seal Discovery Motion

A defense attorney in Drew Peterson's murder case says he'll oppose a motion by prosecutors to keep evidence under wraps as the legal process against the former Bolingbrook police sergeant proceeds.

A newly assigned judge in the case, Stephen White, will hear a state request to seal discovery at a hearing on Wednesday. Peterson's attorney, Joel Brodsky, says he'll argue that it'll be difficult to keep evidence from the public in the high-profile case. And he says he wants the process to be as transparent as possible.

Will County Judge Stephen White ordered Peterson's lawyers on Wednesday to give him phone numbers of family, friends and attorneys that Peterson calls.
White says if Peterson wants to call somebody not on the list, he has to notify the jail.

Peterson has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the 2004 death of his third wife Kathleen Savio. He's also a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy. The judge's order comes after Peterson called a radio show from jail.

White also wants to be notified on all interviews and press releases involved in the case.
The judge also ordered that the names of witnesses and potential witnesses be sealed.

The judge set an Aug. 24 trial date. Brodsky, who can ask for a continuance, said it was a realistic date as long as Peterson is in custody.

UPDATED: Peterson judge limits phone contact, interviews

Asst. State's Atty. Nicole Moore raised the issue of Joel Brodsky, one of Peterson's attorneys, playing a card game with his client 10 minutes into an afternoon visit on May 24.

Defense attorney Andrew Abood said Brodsky was trying to help Peterson relax before making "some very serious decisions about his case." --In their court filing, Peterson's attorneys described him as being "sluggish, slow to respond and forgetful" due to being locked up in isolation. But White said the games would have to go.

Also during Wednesday's hearing, prosecutors turned over three cardboard boxes containing nearly 9,500 pages of documents to defense attorneys; defense attorneys have until June 8. White ordered a list of possible witnesses--which defense attorneys said included hundreds of people--to be sealed.
A trial was set for Aug. 24.

Judge Makes Rules For Peterson Media Interviews

White also wants to be notified on all interviews and press releases involved in the case. The judge also ordered that the names of witnesses and potential witnesses be sealed.

As a former police officer and high-profile inmate, Peterson is being kept in solitary confinement in the facility's medical unit, which is the easiest area to segregate prisoners. Behind the clear door of his 6-by-9 foot cell, Peterson has a bed, toilet, sink and shower, which faces a centralized open area where guards monitor activity from a raised command bridge.

Peterson is allowed out of the cell for 90 minutes each day when he can sit in the common area, look through the small library of lawbooks or use a computer that does not have Internet access for legal research.

Peterson used one of a bank of phones near the chairs to call the radio station Wednesday afternoon.

Judge wants to lower Peterson's media profile

The prosecution Wednesday turned over more than 9,400 pages of interview transcripts, police reports and the like, but the judge ordered Peterson's lawyers not to reveal to the press witness names.

Couple of odds and ends: The defense team expects an appellate court to rule in the next week or so on the motion to lower Drew Peterson's bond. If it is lowered substantially, he could post and get out of jail.

Also, the defense team said Wednesday they will definitely file a request to move this case out of Will County, but if that's not granted Drew Peterson's attorneys tell ABC7 that they will be ready to go to trial. That date has been set for August 24.

Judge limits Drew Peterson publicity

White also ordered that all attorneys in the case must notify him and the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of any interviews and send copies of press releases.

The publicity threatens the ability for a fair trial, said Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow, who said he has limited speaking out on the case.

"This is the place to put a cap on it," he said of pretrial publicity. "I'm trying to protect the jury pool here." Brodsky countered that he needs to be able to talk to the media, saying publicity might prompt potential witnesses to come forward with relevant information.

The judge set an Aug. 24 trial date.

Brodsky, who can ask for a continuance, said it was a realistic date as long as Peterson is in custody.
