Mr Duthie raised the possibility that the police inquiry could continue into next year.

He said: “The investigation continues. We go to the Home Office every six months. We have a smaller team dealing with it because we have less inquiries to deal with but we still have a job to do.

“I imagine that if we have not completed our inquiries within six months we will go back to the Home Office and ask for more money.”

He refused to give further details about the inquiry but confirmed that detectives were still examining possible links to a series of burglaries in the Algrarve area at the time Madeleine went missing.

One of the biggest payments to the detective’s appeal fund was £1,000 claimed to be from a ‘very large’ group of unnamed Met police officers who said they were ‘outraged’ at the way the officer had been treated.
The post accompanying the donation, which cannot be verified, added: ‘This strikes at the very basis of the way investigations should be conducted, without fear or favour, malice or ill will. The world can clearly see where the malice and ill will are in this case.’

Funding for enquiry extended as there is a new lead regarding a photograph allegedly taken of Madeleine before her abduction:
The theory was first explored nine years ago by private detectives working for the family following reports a gang was seen looking at children on the beach and taking pictures.

But the line of enquiry has been given further credence by Met detectives following a tip a Belgian paedophile ring had placed an order for a "young girl" just three days before Madeleine vanished.

'SCOTLAND Yard has been given more money to probe an “important” new lead in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

The development is being taken so seriously that senior Whitehall officials have been briefed by the Met on its progress.

Detectives are following a tip that a gang of European traffickers snatched the tot after taking pictures of her.

It could end up proving that she is still alive, nearly ten years after she vanished.

The search for Madeleine has been extended by months after Scotland Yard was given more cash.

But senior cops admit the investigation of the new lead is the “last throw of the dice” in their hunt.

The Met is taking the development so seriously that leading Whitehall officials are being briefed on its progress.

A source said: “This is an important new line of inquiry which could provide an explanation on whether Madeleine was abducted and transported away.

“It raises hope that she could still be alive.”

Retired Yard detective Colin Sutton said the extra money for the last line of inquiry means “there must be something worthwhile”.

A focus of the inquiry is whether Madeleine, who vanished just days before her fourth birthday in May 2007, was abducted by traffickers.'​
 
A Home Office spokeswoman said: "Following an application from the Metropolitan Police for Special Grant funding, the Home Office has confirmed £85,000 in operational costs for Operation Grange for the period 1 April until September 2017."

"As with all applications, the resources required are reviewed regularly and careful consideration is given before any new funding is allocated."

Investigative Criminal Profiler and Profile of the Disappearance of Madeleine McCann author Pat Brown told news.com.au that Scotland Yard bungled the investigation and slammed the crime fighting agency for “wasting time and money” on Madeleine’s case.

“Madeleine is dead,” Ms Brown said.

“There’s no point spending all of this money as nothing they do is going to make that child alive.”
