Requests Made for a 2nd Search Near Haleigh's Home
Posted: Sunday, 12 July 2009 5:38PM
<snipped>
The property in question is just through the wooded area behind the former home of Ronald Cummings and has a green trailer on in it. The man who lives in the trailer is reported to be a rent-free tennent of a landlord who has granted him permission to reside there.

It is this trailer that has psychics and some members of Haleigh's family convinced that the child's body might be buried there.

I was filing live reports from Hermit's Cove for 97.3 The Sky and for several CNN Headline News programs (Nancy Grace, ISSUES with Jane Velez-Mitchell and PRIME NEWS with Mike Galanos) the day the cadaver dogs were there and hit upon the dumpsters. I saw the dogs roaming through that wooded area, but not on the property where the green trailer sits.

Maybe this property is worth another look?

I spoke recently with several of Haleigh's family members and each of them is expressing frustration at the slow movement in the case. One relative who has been virtually silent for months told me Friday night that if some level of satisfaction is not met in the next couple of days, that silence will likely be broken.

Neighbor: Renters to move in Haleigh's former home
Last Update: 7/07 10:47 pm
<snipped>
A neighbor who lives near the home Haleigh Cummings was last seen in, tells Action News new renters are moving in later this month.

Jim Batchler said visitors still come by to see the trailer the family lived in. He said a woman recently traveled there from Orlando.

Five-year-old Haleigh disappeared from the home in February. Her family moved out after that.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says it still receives calls about Haleigh and follows up on every tip.

Haleigh Update: Family Members Getting Restless?
July 14, 2009
<snipped>
I have promised my sources anonymity. It will be respected.

These family members have spoken individually and collectively with law enforcement officials pretty regularly since Haleigh disappeared. They said they have been told by one of the principal officers in the case that the investigation is starting over again from square one.

Law enforcement officials tell me the investigation continues.

In the meantime, some family members have indicated that another physical search for Haleigh on the property where a green trailer sits beyond a wooded area behind the home where Haleigh was taken might be planned. An officer told one family member that an attempt to contact the resident of the green trailer was in the process of being made when that officer was called into a meeting.

The other family members told me that after another meeting with some investigators recently and meetings later with each other that they have elected to wait an additional ten days or more before making any possible public statements about the case.

5 Months Later, No Sign Of Little Haleigh Cummings

For Haleigh Cummings' grandmother, it's not knowing what happened to the 5-year-old girl that tears her apart.

Is Haleigh alive or dead? Did someone take her from her father's doublewide mobile home early Feb. 10 or did she wander away in the middle of the night?

"If she is alive, are they taking care of her, feeding her? We wonder if we are going to ever see her again," Marie G. said.

Since Day One, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said it believes the girl was abducted from the home hidden beneath towering trees near the end of a sparsely populated rural dirt street.

Ironically, Haleigh was reported missing just hours before a memorial service was held in Orlando for 2-year-old Caylee Anthony.

"We are working on it every day," Bowling said. "There has been a high level of frustration from the beginning of not being able to get to the logical conclusion, solve the case and return Haleigh to her family."

"We are not ruling out any possibility," Bowling said. Another meeting is expected soon.

While the search continued, a soap opera developed.

The Sheffield-Griffis family believe Cummings and Croslin have been inconsistent in their stories to authorities.
About a month after the little girl disappeared, Cummings and Croslin married.

A call to Gregory Kimball, an attorney representing Haleigh's father, was not returned and a woman who answered the telephone at the office said Cummings was no longer doing interviews.

Deputies recently searched the property near Glen St. Mary in north Florida where Griffis and Sheffield live. They found nothing.Griffis believes the case will eventually be solved.

"I still think the police have something. They just haven't put it all together yet. When they get all this evidence in and they can put all this stuff in one big pile, they will tell the people what they have and make an arrest," she said.

Ernie Allen, president and CEO of The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, said while speed is important, someone knows what happened to Haleigh and law enforcement just needs their information to solve the case.

"There is hope that Haleigh Cummings is alive and she is recoverable," Allen said, adding that only a third of stranger abductions result in death.

Investigators "don't leave any stone unturned" in Haleigh case

Putnam County investigators continue to wait for the right tip that could lead them to Haleigh Cummings, who disappeared from her Satsuma home in February.

Last month, officers searched the grounds at the Baker County home of the child's maternal grandmother. They located animal remains, confirming information that animals had been buried on the land and ensuring that "we don't leave any stone unturned" in the ongoing search for the child, according to the Sheriff's Office.

No suspects have been named in Haleigh's disappearance and no motive has been advanced by the Sheriff's Office as to what could have happened to the child.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Johnny Greenwood said this week there currently are no plans for additional searches without credible information calling for one. And, absent new developments, a second meeting gathering investigators from different agencies working on the case also has not been scheduled.

The Sheriff's Office does not consider the case cold, he said

"We have to operate on several theories. Stranger abduction is one of them," Maj. Gary Bowling said. "We are investigating every possibility. There any number of things that could have happened."

"We are working on it every day," Bowling said. "There has been a high level of frustration from the beginning of not being able to get to the logical conclusion, solve the case and return Haleigh to her family."

After a round-table discussion in early June with the sheriff's office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the FBI and the State Attorney's Office, it was announced that there were still more than 4,000 leads being followed.

"We are not ruling out any possibility," Bowling said. Another meeting is expected soon.

A call to Gregory Kimball, an attorney representing Haleigh's father, was not returned and a woman who answered the telephone at the office said Cummings was no longer doing interviews.

Ernie Allen, president and CEO of The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, said while speed is important, someone knows what happened to Haleigh and law enforcement just needs their information to solve the case.

The Florida Department of Children and Families found no evidence that the father of missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings physically abused his children, an attorney representing Ronald Cummings said.

The law firm of Kimball & Snider said DCF has advised it that the investigation is closed and 25-year-old Cummings will keep custody of his son, Ronald Jr.

In March, an attorney representing the children's mother, Crystal Sheffield, said there was evidence of abuse in the household.

The attorney representing Ronald Cummings says there have been no findings of child abuse against the father of the missing girl.

Ronald Cummings is the father of Haleigh Cummings, the 5-year-old girl who disappeared the night of February 9 when she went to bed at her home in Satsuma.

Kimball & Snider, P.A., the firm which is handling legal matters for Ronald Cummings, released a statement saying DCF's "investigation is closed with no factual finding of abuse against Ronald Cummings."

The firm says Haleigh's brother, Ronald Cummings Jr., will continue to live with his father, and that Mr. Cummings will take parenting classes with Misty Croslin Cummings, the woman who put Haleigh to bed the night the she vanished.

Haleigh Cummings' father cleared in DCF abuse investigation

Attorney Greg Kimball with the law practice of Kimball & Snider in Palatka, which represented Cummings pro bono, said there are no other pending legal matters in this case.

"Now it's just about where is Haleigh," he said.

According to John Harrell, a spokesman for DCF's northeast region, the investigation was closed a few weeks ago with no indicators of abuse. He said the couple were strongly encouraged to attend parenting classes, "to cover issues like age-appropriate supervision and other topics."

As for Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, it was stated in the release that an agreement of visitation has been "judicially approved regarding Ronald Cummings Jr. and parental rights." Details were not provided. Sheffield's attorney, Kim Picazio, did not immediately return telephone calls on Thursday.

Kimball said Sheffield has visitation rights with her son and that some other family law issues were modified.

Kimball and Snider said their office has provided information to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office regarding Haleigh's disappearance that they believe might be beneficial to the search.

"But at this point in time, there is nothing further for us to do," they wrote.

Kimball said the family is unsure of how it will continue the search for Haleigh, largely relying on law enforcement.

Haleigh Cummings' mother fires lawyer (*NOTE: Ronald Cummings also released his lawyer too!
Last Update: 9:23 pm

When Action News showed up to Crystal Sheffield’s home in Baker County, we were welcomed into her mother’s living room. Inside is a makeshift memorial where a candle is burning. Crystal says that one candle is an “eternal candle”, and she says it will stay lit until Haleigh comes home.

Something not so eternal is the relationship between Crystal and her former lawyer Kim Picazio. Sheffield has decided to end her relationship with Picazio after many months of legal representation.

Sheffield says she’s tired of hearing rumors about the investigation being leaked out from inside sources. She believes maintaining a relationship with Picazio will do more to harm the case than help it.

As for Sheffield, she says she will continue to do fund raisers and anything else that will keep the name Haleigh Cummings in the media

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Added the legal letters from Ronald's lawyer:
Haleigh Cummings’ father, Ronald Cummings, has also released his legal representation. Cummings was formally represented by the Putnam County legal group Kimball & Snider. The following is a statement sent to Action News by his former legal team:
“This office has been successful in handling the DCF investigation and resolving family law issues between Ronald Cummings and Crystal Sheffield. We undertook this representation pro bono as a public service to not only Ronald Cummings, but to the citizens of Putnam County in the interest of clearing up these controversies. There are no pending legal matters involving Ronald Cummings. We are ending today our representation of Ronald Cummings on good terms. Our website, findhaleighnow.com will remain online but will not be updated.”
"Kimball & Snider DCF Investigation Into Ronald Cummings Is Over":
“This office has been advised verbally by Attorney Kevin Caldwell of the Palatka office of the Florida Division of Children and Families that their investigation is closed with no factual finding of abuse against Ronald Cummings. We are awaiting the written report. Ronald Cummings Jr. will continue to reside with and be in the custody of Ronald Cummings. Ronald Cummings and Misty Croslin Cummings have both agreed to take parenting classes, which is a standard precaution that DCF seeks.”
Custody battle resolved
The younger brother of missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings will stay with his father and stepmother after a finding by state child welfare workers that neither child was abused, attorneys representing the parents said.
Ronald Cummings Jr. will remain with Ronald Cummings after the state Department of Children and Families concluded an investigation driven in part by the boy's biological mother. Haleigh Cummings remains missing.
She said she also is withdrawing from the case and will no longer represent Sheffield. Palatka attorneys Greg Kimball and T. Jerry Snider also said Thursday they will no longer represent Cummings. The three lawyers all were working pro bono.
Picazio said an outstanding issue of approximately $12,000 Sheffield owed Cummings in child support has been settled by a donor from Texas.
Picazio said she and Sheffield's family came to a mutual agreement that she step down. She said she has done what she can as a family law attorney but had been unfairly attacked by observers and others in the case.
"I seem to get a lot of criticism for raising family issues which is what I do," she said. "People have really taken sides in this case."
Picazio raised issues regarding both Cummings children and met with Children and Families investigators about what she believes was abuse. Harrell said he could not reveal who brought complaints to the agency but has said in the past that there have been meetings with Picazio.
Lawyers leave Haleigh case
Picazio represented Crystal Sheffield, Haleigh's mother, since March on a pro bono basis to help the family cope with media. She recently filed a motion to withdraw.
"I'm not going to be working on the case unless there is an emergency," Picazio said.
Greg Kimball and T. Jerry Snider have represented Ronald Cummings, Haleigh's father, on a pro bono basis, also since March. On Thursday, they withdrew their representation from the case.
Haleigh's Parents' Attorneys Withdraw From Case
Kim Picazio represented Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, who lives in Baker County. Picazio told First Coast News she withdrew her name as Sheffield's attorney. Picazio said she could not comment about withdrawing representation.
In addition, attorneys Greg Kimball and Terry Snider of Palatka had represented Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings.
In an e-mail, Kimball and Snider announced they are no longer Cummings' attorneys.
The email said, "There are no pending legal matters involving Ronald Cummings. We are ending today (July 16th) our representation of Ronald Cummings on good terms. Our website, findhaleighnow.com, will remain online but will not be updated."
Picazio said both sides had worked on an agreed order to resolve some ongoing conflict between the parties. The order includes issues such as visitation and taking children to doctors' appointments.
This week, Picazio told First Coast News she is satisfied with the DCF investigation at the Putnam County level. However, she is not satisfied with the outcome.
Picazio said she feels the case workers and investigators did everything they should have and did "an outstanding job." However, she feels DCF executives chose to dismiss the investigation's findings.
Picazio told First Coast News, "The fact they didn't take action was ridiculous."
Haleigh: Reporter's Notes 7/25/09
I have a whole new appreciation for the law enforcement professionals who are investigating the abduction of 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings who was taken from her father's home in Hermit's Cove near Satsuma, Florida in February, 2009.
Many of you are scratching your heads about now.
Has law enforcement been a fountain of information when it comes to letting the public know how the investigation is progressing? No.
Has law enforcement been working on things beyond your and my scope of knowledge and imagination on this case? Yes.
Have I spoken to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, FBI and the Putnam County Sheriff's Office all in the past few days? Yes.
To dispell a few things:
*All the forensic evidence is accounted for--even the back door to the trailer where the abduction took place.
*FDLE and PSCO physically work together everyday on the case.
*FBI is always consulted and remains tighlty in the loop.
*LE will not make public statements in this case unless it is necessary to avoid compromising the investigation
*LE knows all about the "crimes" associated with the major issue of an abducted little girl (including the illegal purchases of cigarettes by a minor that seems to have some folks coming unglued!). They are focusing on the finding and safe return of Haleigh for now. When the time comes to arrest people, they will.
