Haleigh

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- As the search for Haleigh Cummings enters Day 5, local parents who have gone through similar heartbreak are coming together to show support. Sheila DeLongis, the mother of Maddie Clifton, organized a get-together along with parents of murdered children at Metropolitan Park Saturday.
DeLongis says the event is in honor of Maddie, her 8-year-old daughter who was murdered ten years ago by a neighbor on the First Coast.
DeLongis spoke with First Coast News Friday, sharing her thoughts and feelings on Haleigh's disappearance.

SATSUMA - Four days ago, few outside Putnam County had ever heard of this one-traffic-light town nestled along the St. Johns River.

Now, dozens of reporters and satellite trucks have converged on Satsuma to tell the world of one of this community's saddest stories: The disappearance of 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings.

SATSUMA - Two hundred and fifty volunteers scoured rural Putnam County for signs of Haleigh Cummings, but they failed to find anything suspicious, a Putnam County Sheriff's official said at a televised news conference Saturday afternoon.

Investigators have also determined that several objects they deemed "items of interest" that were found by searchers Friday are not related to Haleigh's disappearance, Chief Deputy Rick Ryan said at the news conference.

Amber Alert: Haleigh's Family Puts Feud Aside
Sunday, February 15, 2009 12:22:32 AM

SATSUMA -- The rift between Haleigh Cumming's family members could be over for now.

The feud could be seen from day one when Haleigh's grandparents on the mother's side questioned stories the 5-year-old's father, Ronald Cummings, and his girlfriend, Misty Croslin, first gave to detectives when Haleigh vanished from her Satsuma Putnam county home.

Weather Becomes Factor In Search For 5-Year-Old

As Saturday's search came to an end, Putnam County Undersheriff Rick Ryan said the crime lab had ruled those items out as evidence and nothing new of significance had turned up.
Volunteers with Texas Equusearch accompanied by law enforement officers continued to look for anything out of the ordinary, such as fresh tire tracks, beaten-down brush, burn marks, clothing or anything that's out of place in the environment.
Saturday's search also included the use of high-tech equipment, including some SONAR devices and thermal-imaging cameras.

<snipped>
02/13/09 7:00 pm - Approximately 170 volunteers showed up today, along with 37 TES staff members. Teams were dispatched throughout the day in conjunction with members of various law enforcement agencies. We feel as if we covered a lot of ground. The community has truly come together and supported our search effort with donations of food and water, along with volunteering in the search. Law enforcement has done an incredible job of searching and of providing TES with support.
If you are interested in volunteering today, or over the weekend if the search continues, please keep your eye on this website for updates. To volunteer, you must be 18 years old or older and have a valid photo ID. In order to make the check in process easier, please download, complete and bring with you, a copy of the Volunteer Registration form and a copy of your valid photo ID.
We need people to search on foot and on horseback. We do not need ATV’s at this time. Horse owners must bring a copy of a negative Coggins report for each horse, to be retained by TES for our records. At this time, we are not in need of any K-9 teams.

02/14/09 - 1:45pm - Over 200 volunteers have shown up this morning to search for Haleigh. In addition, people have come from all over with donations of food and drink for our volunteers, and we cannot begin to express our gratitude. Searchers are working extremely hard to find Haleigh, and conditions are rough. The terrain is treacherous in places, and sometimes, it is slow moving. However, we are making good progress and we are all feeling as if we are making a difference.

Search Continues For Missing 5-Year-Old Girl
Friday, February 13, 2009 – updated: 9:26 pm EST February 14, 2009

The search area expanded Friday into thick, dense woods. Saturday, about 250 volunteers showed up to assist Texas EquuSearch in the search for the missing 5-year-old. "There's areas they've got mapped out and we're gonna concentrate on that. The area's law enforcement has. We're gonna cover every square inch," EquuSearch's Tim Miller said. While deputies are still on the ground looking, all of the volunteers free up more detectives to work on the investigation.
Saturday, George and Cindy Anthony stopped by the search area briefly to offer support to Haleigh’s parents. After months of searching, Caylee Anthony’s remains were found in a wooded area near her home. People searching in Satsuma are optimistic this search will end differently and Haleigh will be found alive.
The past several days Haleigh’s parents have been holding separate prayer vigils, but Saturday night both sides of the family will join together.

They have not only talked to neighbors but in some cases have gotten permission to search property. And they are working with state officials who have firsthand experience with such cases, such as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Child Abduction Response Team - known as CART.
"Our people here have either worked on missing child cases or are part of our CART team, which has been out here and which Putnam County initiated on the front end," said FDLE Special Agent Dominick D. Pape. "If they have not worked on a case, they have at least had lots of training in this to assist the sheriff."

Where they can, they've gone into residences, including getting permission from owners of vacant buildings to search the premises.
And officers have indicated they've been trying to check not only the whereabouts but the homes of 44 registered sex offenders living on both sides of the St. Johns River near Haleigh's home.

Ryan said law officers have gone to the Cummings home many times and will continue to do so to make sure they have not missed anything.
Ryan did not discuss the details of the investigation or any polygraphs administered. However, he said, "Everybody is a person of interest. We're continuing the interviews. We're talking to everybody."

The underwater search in the St. Johns River planned for today will not take place, although air and foot searches will continue.
"After tomorrow, we will sit down and evaluate all the areas of search throughout the week and make a determination as to whether we need to continue to expand or if we're satisfied with the area that we've taken a look at thoroughly," Ryan said.
Griffis said Ronald Jr. is holding up well and is aware that his sister is missing. She said she hoped the family could all get together for "Junior's" birthday today. He is turning 4. "We have to do it for Haleigh," she said.

A familiar face joined in the search for Haleigh on Thursday. George Anthony, the grandfather of slain toddler Caylee Anthony, showed up at the command post to offer help and support.
"At times I think the most success we could ever hope for right now is to find her little body," said Tim Miller of EquuSearch. "So that there's some closure and law enforcement will have another area to search."
A news conference to update the public on the status of the case will be held Sunday at 4 p.m.
