“Credible information has been developed that there are locations in the McCleary area that may contain evidence that may assist investigators in locating Lindsey Baum,” Sgt. Steve Shumate of the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office read from a statement Friday morning. “This activity is expected through the weekend. Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation and to reduce the risk of compromise, no further details of the current investigative activity will be released.”

The Sheriff’s Office mobile command center has returned to McCleary, Shumate added, at least through the weekend. During the past few weeks, investigators had been working from Montesano.

Some in South Sound plan to hold a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. today at Evergreen Christian Center on Fourth Street in McCleary to mark three months since Lindsey went missing.

will be out again Saturday searching for clues in the disappearance of 11-year-old Lindsey Baum – three months to the day she vanished while walking home from a friend's house.

Friday morning, Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office investigators, along with FBI agents and members of the King County Sheriff's Office, began serving search warrants in and around the McCleary area. The warrants allow investigators a chance to thoroughly search private properties.

The family is working with community members to organize a candlelight vigil 8 p.m. Saturday.

"If she's home by then, it will be a celebration," said Melissa.

The Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, the King County Sheriff’s Office and other regional law enforcement agencies are serving the search warrants, Shumate said.

He said that community members may notice the increased police presence today and through the weekend.

The Sheriff’s Office mobile command center has returned to McCleary, Shumate added, at least through the weekend. During the past few weeks, investigators had been working from Montesano.

“We’re just getting started with the search warrants,” Shumate said this morning. “I wish I could say more but we can’t jeopardize the investigation.”

Supporters of Baum planned to conduct a candlelight vigil Saturday to mark three months since she went missing.

The group plans to gather at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Evergreen Christian Center on Fourth Street in McCleary to offer support and share the latest news on the search.

Investigators step up search after tip

Investigators spent hours combing through junk cars and exploring a vacant house on a large swath of land outside McCleary city limits Friday, all in the search for more clues in the disappearance of 11-year-old Lindsey Baum.

Helicopter footage from KOMO 4 showed investigators in white protective gear entering and exiting an abandoned house south of McCleary. The home and a nearby barn or shed, covered in blue tarps, is surrounded by brush and trees in each direction.

Investigators loaded boxes full of belongings into a horse trailer that looked like it was being used for evidence.

The mobile command center was set up in a second residence surrounded by junk cars, according to the video posted online by KOMO.

KOMO 4 reported that the people living in the house on the outskirts of town were asked to leave after receiving a search warrant.

Shumate said detectives interviewed some people Friday, but declined to go into details and didn’t name anyone as a suspect or person of interest.

Grays Harbor Prosecutor Stew Menefee declined to release the search warrants to the public, but said the records will become public within five days of being executed.

Shumate said investigators spent Friday gathering small items — fibers, hair — and larger items, just about anything that could give them a hint as to where Baum could be. He declined to say why they were searching the house or junk cars, except to say that the locations “may contain evidence that may assist investigators in locating Lindsey Baum.”

IN McCLEARY:
Search Warrants Served For Missing Girl
September 26, 2009
<snipped>
Investigators plan to be out again today (Saturday) searching for clues in the disappearance of 11-year-old Lindsey Baum of McCleary. Approximately 50 searchers will be working through the weekend.

Friday morning, Grays Harbor Sheriff's deputies, FBI agents and members of the King County Sheriff's Office, started serving search warrants in and around the McCleary area.

It appeared investigators had reason to search specific properties in the area for the missing girl but a Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office spokesperson would only say the search warrants were a result of their "continuing investigation" and that authorities had credible information that lead to the searches.

Authorities did not say where the locations were they intended to search or if anyone was specifically being looked at as a suspect in Baum's disappearance.

Search warrants issued in Lindsey Baum case

In what could be a big break in the case of a missing 11-year-old girl, authorities executed search warrants Friday at two locations to seek evidence in the mysterious disappearance of Lindsey Baum.

The searches, both in the McCleary area, cover so much ground that agents were brought in from the FBI, along with detectives in the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office and King County Sheriff's Office.

Lindsey's mother says everybody is considered a suspect. "Don't trust anyone anymore - it could be anybody," she said.

Lindsey's disappearance has baffled and alarmed residents of McCleary, a small town where everyone knows their neighbors.

On Saturday night, there will be an 8 p.m. candlelight vigil in McCleary to mark the three-month anniversary of the day Lindsey Baum vanished.

This is a developing news story. More information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

Vigil tonight for missing McCleary girl
05:03 PM PDT on Saturday, September 26, 2009
<snipped>
Detectives resumed their search Saturday for a missing 10-year-old girl at two homes in the small town of McCleary.

Grays Harbor Sheriff's deputies and the FBI searched inside the homes yesterday, and spent today searching outside. But they found nothing to lead them to Lindsey Baum.

Authorities say the search warrants are part of their continuing investigation, but they won't say whether anyone specific is being targeted.

Detectives said they had "credible information" to conduct the searches.

A candlelight vigil will be held tonight for Lindsey. Everyone is welcomed to gather at Evergreen Christian Center in McCleary, beginning at 8 p.m.

Melissa is convinced her daughter is still alive and has a message for whoever may have taken Lindsey.

"Everybody has a soul, and how can you live with yourself if you know something that's keeping a little girl from her family?" said Melissa.

No breakthroughs in Lindsey Baum disappearance

Officials executed search warrants Friday at two rural properties near the small town where Lindsey Baum vanished June 26 while walking home from a friend's home. The agents continued their work at both properties on Saturday.

But as Lindsey's mother, Melissa, and other local residents waited eagerly for any news, there was no indication that the searches had turned up any evidence that could help find Lindsey or explain her disappearance.

It's been exactly three months since Lindsey went missing - an entire season has passed.

Yet a dark cloud still hangs over the town of McCleary even on a beautiful, warm fall day.

And about a mile and a half southwest of McCleary there is now a law enforcement checkpoint, where only residents can get by.

It is down this road that local and federal agents served a search warrant at a home and a nearby property on Friday, beginning an exhaustive investigation at both locations.

A team from the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Department, the King County Sheriff's Department and the FBI has set up a mobile command post, as they comb through the house, land and even cars for potential evidence.

Officials say tips by citizens - deemed "credible information" - led them to the 11-acre property nestled in the woods.

Next weekend another all-out search is scheduled in the area, with volunteers set to help out Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It's been exactly three months since 11-year old Lindsey Baum disappeared while walking home from a friend's house in McCleary.

The community held a vigil for Lindsey Saturday night.

Meantime, the search for Lindsey continues. On Friday the FBI and sheriff's deputies served search warrants at multiple locations near McCleary including some properties along Foreman Road.

A Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office spokesman wouldn't give many details, but said the warrants stem from tips and following-up on leads. More warrants will be served through the weekend with the help of the FBI and King County Sheriff''s Office.

Police have yet to find big break in case
No “smoking gun” discovered; evidence heads to forensic labs
Sunday, September 27, 2009 1:14 AM PDT
<snipped>
The search on the properties in question intensified Saturday, bumping up the civilian search and rescue experts and law enforcement personnel from 30 people on Friday to 50 people on Saturday. Search dogs were also brought.

Chief Criminal Deputy Dave Pimentel said he conducted interviews with a number of people Friday, but said no suspects or persons of interests have been named and no arrests have been made.

“So far, we have not found that smoking gun, we have not found anything that would jump out at us, but without forensic analysis done at the lab, we can’t really say whether what we’ve found will help our cause or not.”

The Daily World called Melissa Baum Saturday evening, but she could not be reached. She told KIRO-TV Friday evening that she’s hopeful she might finally get some answers.

“When it boils down to it, I go to bed every night without kissing my daughter goodnight and that’s all I want to do.”

Vigil held for missing McCleary girl

Candles of hope were lit in McCleary Saturday as people came together, united by a painful mystery - what happened to 11-year-old Lindsey Baum on the afternoon of June 26?

"Somebody out there knows something, and I'm hopeful somebody can finally come forward and give some information that can finally bring her home," said Lindsey's mom, Melissa.

Vigil organizers said they will never forget, and never stop looking.

"I just want to make sure that she's not forgotten, that everybody knows she's still out there. She's still not home," said Melissa Baum

A sheriff's department spokesman said their search would likely continue through the weekend.

Missing Girl: No big findings reported

The search on the properties in question intensified Saturday, bumping up the number of civilian search-and-rescue experts and law enforcement personnel from 30 on Friday to 50 on Saturday. Search dogs also were brought in.

“So far, we have not found that smoking gun; we have not found anything that would jump out at us. But without forensic analysis done at the lab, we can’t really say whether what we’ve found will help our cause or not,” he said.

Pimentel said he couldn’t reveal what led detectives to two isolated locations along Foreman Road, just outside McCleary. Deputies were restricting access to the road and checking licenses to make sure only local residents could get through a road block. The restrictions were in place through Sunday.

Detectives combed an abandoned home and an adjoining shed or barn from morning until night Friday. The property is on about 11 acres of land, Pimentel said. On Saturday, Pimentel said, detectives brought in search dogs and search-and-rescue experts to help search the surrounding brush, trees and grasslands.

At a second site, detectives set up a mobile command unit from the King County Sheriff’s Office near dozens of junk cars and debris at a second residence along Foreman Road. The property owners were told to leave the area.

“This is just one tip we’ve received that we decided to follow up on out of thousands, literally, thousands of tips,” Pimentel said. “The people we talked to yesterday were among the hundreds and hundreds of people we’ve talked to, as well.”.

Haleigh Cummings Case Break Coincides with Lindsey Baum Case Break
September 27, 2009
<snipped>
On opposite sides of the country, police investigating the cases of little girls who seem to have vanished without a trace received information that could break the floundering investigations. Haleigh Cummings, 5, disappeared from Satsuma, Florida February 10. In McCleary, Washington, Lindsey Baum,10, left a friend's house and never made it home the night of June 26.

Could the followup on tips received in both cases lead to one or the other of the little girls being found soon? Will the imbalance of publicity affect the outcome of the two investigations?

Search Warrants Served in Lindsey Baum Case
After 9 hours of searching at one location, police told KING 5 News that there were no major developments. Resumption of the search on Saturday yielded boxes of potential evidence gathered pursuant to the warrants.

The police have not disclosed any specifics as to what prompted the search but the search warrants themselves will become public documents 5 days after their execution and may give the public additional insight into the investigation.

KOMO News reported one of the sites searched was a dilapidated house and another a house with junk cars in the yard, whose residents were asked to leave when the warrant was served. KOMO News learned from Sgt. Steve Shumate of the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office that investigators were gathering evidence that include fibers and hairs, looking for any clue about what happened to Lindsey.

Shumate said in an interview with KIRO televison that police were looking for the clothing that Lindsey was wearing when she disappeared or any other trace of her. Police are interviewing the family who lives on the property.

Disparate Media Coverage of the Baum and Cummings Cases
The Lindsey Baum case, by contrast with the Haleigh Cummings case, has garnered much less media attention and few public clues as to what may have happened to the McCleary, Washington pre-teen.

The Baum case is not as sensational as the Cummings case, in part because the Baum family and associates appear to be mainstream. The Cummings family and associates have earned their milieu the nickname Dysfunction Junction, with arrests for illegal drug use, battery, and forgery, allegations of child abuse, underage sex, and myriad other less than stellar behaviors.

The apparent abduction of Lindsey Baum is of no less importance than the abduction of Haleigh Cummings, yet the absence of tawdry entertainment value associated with its reporting seems to minimize the news coverage.

While these most recent criminal charges against a relative of a key figure in the Haleigh Cummings investigation garnered wide publicity, the vigil marking the 3 month point in Lindsey Baum's disappearance passed largely unnoticed.

No new clues after weekend search warrants
Investigators “didn’t find anything we’re excited about”
Monday, September 28, 2009 11:15 AM PDT
<snipped>
Investigators cleared roadblocks from a rural McCleary area street and allowed a family back into its home over the weekend after finding no new evidence explaining the disappearance of 11-year-old Lindsey Baum.

Grays Harbor Chief Criminal Deputy Dave Pimentel said the potentially credible information that launched two search warrants along Foreman Road and new interviews Friday has not produced any new direction for investigators.

Pimentel noted the recent attention did bring in a new wave of tips on Lindsey’s case as the investigators marked three months since her June 26 disappearance. The new tips will be reviewed along with thousands of others that have come into the Sheriff’s Office.

“We’ve still got hundreds of tips,” he said. “There’s plenty of work to be done.”

Pimentel said investigators collected several samples of potential forensic evidence Friday while combing two residences and nearby property outside McCleary. It could be months before forensic tests tell investigators if any of the evidence is helpful.

The residents of a home undergoing a search were allowed to return late Saturday, he said. Sheriff’s deputies and investigators with the FBI and the McCleary Police Department are regrouping and moving forward again with the investigation.

No arrests in new search for McCleary girl
September 28, 2009
<snipped>
A new search for evidence in Grays Harbor is over with no arrest in the case of a missing 11-year-old girl.

Dozens of deputies and detectives wrapped up a weekend search of cluttered property south of McCleary, but won't say what, if anything, they removed as possible evidence.

Grays Harbor County Chief Criminal Deputy Dave Pimentel says they questioned one person in particular, but have not made an arrest.

Sgt. Steve Shumate told KIRO Radio, on Friday, that if they don't get the information they're hoping for, then "we move on. We go to the next tip until we ultimately find her."

Family Says They Are Unfairly Targeted In McCleary Search
Posted: 4:29 pm PDT September 28, 2009
Updated: 7:40 pm PDT September 28, 2009
<snipped>
The owner of the property told KIRO 7 reporter Richard Thompson that he’s contacted a lawyer about suing the police and the media, saying they had no right to put the family through the search.

Baum’s mother said she is disappointed that nothing was found relating to her daughter, who has been missing for three months.

"I was obviously really hoping something would come from the search," said Melissa Baum.

Law enforcement sources told KIRO 7 that among the evidence collected during the search were condoms and pornographic magazines. A car was also seized and will undergo further forensic testing.

The homeowner of the property said his family has been unfairly targeted in the search, "they didn't find anything here because we didn't do anything to that little girl."

Relatives confirm a man at the house was the focus of the investigation and search. One of his relatives said, "the only reason they were doing this search is, he gave a wrong answer to a question by a detective on the telephone."

Lindsey's mother said she understands the family's frustration, but her daughter's life is at stake.

"If they end up being completely innocent, I'm sorry. But at the same time, my daughter is missing," she said.
