Shocking new details emerge from Sandra Cantu case
May 11th, 2009 - 9:14 am
<snipped>
New details emerged on Sunday, claiming Huckaby raped Sandra with a screwdriver before she died, a source told BNO News. The source said the information is not expected to be released until after the trial.

The source told BNO News that Sandra Cantu’s father, Danny Cantu, has said the Clover Road Baptist Church, where Huckaby’s grandfather is the pastor, is actually a cult with 13 members. Danny also said, according to the source, that he did not kill Sandra and that he would take a lie detector test to prove it.

Danny said he had connections “due to his past” and that the person who killed his daughter “would be taken care of.” He further said the pastor of the church had nothing to do with the girl’s murder and that Sandra’s DNA was found on a cot at the church.

Melissa Huckaby, 28, will be in court in Tracy, Calif., Friday on additional charges filed alleging that she gave "a harmful substance" to a 7-year-old girl in January and an adult man in March, according to the complaint.

The little girl, identified only as Jane M. Doe, has since recovered from the Jan. 17 alleged poisoning. The man, Daniel Plowman, hasn't been located, according to the complaint filed Thursday.

Huckaby's relationship with the two isn't clear, and the type of toxic drug used wasn't disclosed.

Huckaby will appear at 4 p.m. EDT in San Joaquin County Superior Court on the latest charges, filed a day before she was to enter a plea in the Cantu case.

In the new complaint, Huckaby is accused of a single count of child endangerment and two felony counts of furnishing a harmful substance.

According to the complaint, Huckaby "did willfully and unlawfully mingle a harmful substance with food or drink with the intent that (it) be taken by a human being," the Stockton Record reported.

Druggings added to charges facing Huckaby

The woman accused of raping and murdering 8-year-old Sandra Cantu of Tracy is facing new charges alleging that she drugged a 7-year-old girl and a man in the months before Sandra died.

A shackled Melissa Huckaby, 28, made her third appearance Friday in San Joaquin County Superior Court in Stockton but did not enter a plea on the murder charge in Sandra's slaying, or to the new charges of child endangerment and two counts of furnishing a harmful substance.

STOCKTON - Instead of entering a plea on behalf of Tracy's Melissa Huckaby, Deputy Public Defender Sam Behar said in court Friday that he needs more time to consider fresh charges that his client not only murdered an 8-year-old girl but also poisoned two other people.

The vandalism was discovered at the church on Saturday. Church members fear it will continue to be the target of harassment."

The TV broadcast said that authorities are treating it as a hate crime.

Missing children's event in honor of Sandra

As Maria Chavez, mother of the slain Sandra Cantu, sat with her family under a tent at Dr. Powers Park today, other parents took to the stage.

They talked about National Missing Children's Day, which was started 25 years ago by President Ronald Reagan and was recognized for the first time at an event in Tracy today.

Modesto's Susan Levy, mother of Chandra Levy, murdered in 2001, spoke about Wings of Protection, a victim's organization she founded.

Klaas' foundation was one of a dozen organizations that had tables at the park to give out information or services. The KlaasKids Foundation offered free finger-printing.

Playground cottage honors memory of slain Tracy girl

Sandra Cantu was sometimes observed by her neighbors picking flowers. The 8-year-old loved pink and purple.

Kriste and Bob Hennick, Central Coast birdhouse builders, kept in mind the little girl's characteristics when they built a playhouse that they donated to Jacobsen Elementary School in memory of the slain second-grader.

The Hennicks' gift is made of cedar, and it features colorful spring flower boxes, purple trim and a pink door. A sign that reads "Sandra's Cottage" welcomes children inside.

Huckaby's friend finds it 'Difficult to imagine'
High school companion struggles to understand how the girl she once knew could become a woman accused of a horrific crime
May 24, 2009 6:00 AM
<snipped>
Huckaby's high school companion Emily Fontes still cannot comprehend how her long-lost friend ended up accused of such inexplicable crimes.

"It's really difficult to imagine she could be capable of something like this," Fontes said. "The second I saw her booking picture, I just lost it. I was hysterical."

Fontes and then Melissa Lawless were inseparable during their last two years at Brea Olinda High School in Orange County, Fontes said. They performed on the dance squad together, wrote notebooks full of messages to each other and fought over a boy.

"We were just normal teens. We didn't get into trouble," Fontes said.

Still, her friend struggled with dark emotions that Fontes, at the time, chalked up to typical teenage tribulations. Huckaby argued frequently with her mother. She felt depressed and entertained thoughts of suicide.

Fontes has written Huckaby a letter and sent it to the jail. She has not heard back.

The new charges caused another delay in the murder case, CNN afiliate KRON reported.

The complaint charged that Huckaby "did willfully and unlawfully mingle a harmful substance with food or drink" with the intent to harm the child, identified only as "Jane M. Doe."

Another alleged poisoning victim was identified as Daniel Plowman, but no age or other information was immediately provided.

The latest charges also include one count of child abuse endangerment relating to the unidentified child, who was allegedly in Huckaby's "care and custody."

Custody battle over daughter of suspect in the kidnap and killing of Sandra Cantu

A bitter battle is being played out for custody of the 5-year-old daughter of the woman accused of kidnapping and killing Sandra Cantu of Tracy.

Melissa Huckaby, 28, has been in jail since her April 11 arrest for the death of 8-year-old Sandra. Meanwhile, her ex-husband, Johnny Huckaby, and her mother, Judy Lawless, argue in court over who should have protective custody of the Huckabys' daughter.

Melissa Huckaby was granted custody of their child, with Johnny Huckaby authorized supervised visitation rights, following divorce proceedings in 2005.

But in superior court documents filed April 20 in Orange County — where the girl is living with her grandmother — Johnny Huckaby sought, and was granted, sole custody of the girl.

Disturbing evidence found on computer of alleged killer of Sandra Cantu
May 26, 4:43 PM
<snipped>
According to authorities, Huckaby’s hard drive contained multiple Internet searches about a murdered child in Israel.

The child, 4-year-old Rose Pisam disappeared about a year ago and was missing for months. Later, the girl’s grandfather was arrested and confessed to stuffing Rose’s body in a suitcase, which he dumped in a local river.

Huckaby has not yet entered a plea in the case and is scheduled for another court hearing June 12.

As a murder case goes forward against Sandra Cantu's alleged killer, the suspect's daughter is in the middle of a custody dispute.

~snip~

Meanwhile, Huckaby's grandparents, pastor Lane Lawless and wife Connie, are seeking custody of Cameron, Huckaby's daughter. So is the girl's father, Johnny Huckaby, who has little contact with his daughter.

Family law attorney Al Ellis said courts often favor the biological parent, but not always.

"I think the grandparents are going to have a leg up just because of their close ties with the child," Ellis said.

Stockton attorney Al Ellis is preparing a lawsuit against media outlets that identified his client, Melissa Huckaby, by name and photo as the woman who was arrested by Tracy police in the slaying of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.

However, in this case, there are two women named Melissa Huckaby and both share a number of unfortunate similarities -- and not just their names.

Both are from the Tracy area, both have 5-year-old daughters, both are divorced, both are Sunday school teachers and both are 28 years old.
