Oakland County will issue a request for a proposal by mid-September to identify firms capable of conducting an independent review of the emergency response to 2021 Oxford High School attack, a county spokesman said on Tuesday.

The announcement comes after The Detroit News reported earlier this month on questions over potential dispatch delays to the mass shooting on Nov. 30, 2021 that killed four students and injured seven others.

"Oakland County has initiated the process to hire an independent firm to conduct a comprehensive After Action Review (AAR) of the response to the tragic Oxford High School shooting," spokesman William Mullan said in his statement. "County Executive Dave Coulter, Board of Commissioners Chairman David T. Woodward and Sheriff Mike Bouchard are working together to ensure this critical review takes place."

Mullan said the county Board of Commissioners is scheduled to consider the necessary funding on Sept. 5...

I say yes, he had a warning and had he paid attention to his young teen he would know something of his son's obsession with Parkland etc.

The FBI turned the case over to local LE and the kid denied the original threats that came from his social media and LE told the school to watch him.

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners approved $500,000 on Thursday for an independent review of the emergency response to the 2021 Oxford High School attack.

The board unanimously approved the funds and a resolution calling for an after-action review of the mass school shooting that killed four students and injured seven others, including a teacher, on Nov. 30, 2021.

Board chair David T. Woodward, D-Royal Oak, and commissioner and minority caucus chair Michael Spisz, R-Oxford, co-authored a resolution that said it is "imperative" to conduct a thorough and independent review to evaluate the response to the mass shooting "to assess the effectiveness of emergency management, law enforcement and Fire/Emergency Medical actions, and identify lessons learned for future preparedness."...

DETROIT – The families of the Oxford High School shooting victims lost their appeal in a lawsuit to try to hold school employees partially responsible for what happened.

The Michigan Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Oxford school district on Thursday. The court, in a 3-0 opinion, said lawyers for the families have not offered evidence that shows Oxford staff were the “proximate cause” of the tragedy.

While staff had expressed concerns about Ethan Crumbley, and a meeting was held with his parents on the day of the shooting, it was the teenager who “made the definite and premeditated decision” to take a gun to Oxford High School, the appeals court said.

The court affirmed a lower court decision that said governmental immunity applied. Under Michigan law, immunity is a high hurdle to overcome in lawsuits against a public body or staff. Lawyers typically have to show that gross negligence occurred...

The Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled that Oxford schools and its employees have governmental immunity in two lawsuits related to the 2021 Oxford High School shooting that left four students dead as well as six others and a teacher injured.

A three-judge panel ruled Thursday that because of this, the district and its employees can't be sued in connection with their actions leading up to and during the shooting. The judges stated that no reasonable juror would find that anyone aside from shooter Ethan Crumbley can be considered the proximate cause of the shooting.

"While the individual Oxford defendants had some signs (the shooter) might be a danger to himself or others, and Jennifer and James (Crumbley) had even more signs of such, it is simply outside the realm of possibility that a reasonable juror could conclude anyone but (the shooter) was 'the one most immediate, efficient, and direct cause, of the [plaintiffs’] injuries,'" the panel wrote in its ruling on both lawsuits...

Is the judge who is hearing the appeal the same judge who sentenced EC? I would hope that it is not the same judge as there would be an obvious conflict of interest. I don't recall the name of the initial judge in this case who presided over the trial and sentencing.

Sorry. I hadn't read the entire lengthy article. The counselor was reprimanded, asked to resign, but was paid for eight months, as if he were on leave of absence. The fact that he was paid had not been known until recently - it was a secret deal made between him and school administrators. His resignation was official on August 15, 2024.

Thanks, that makes sense, I guess they agreed to give him eight months pay in exchange for his resignation. It was probably less costly for the school than firing him and then facing a lawsuit and having to pay the costs of all the legal fees and possibly losing and paying a lot more than eight months of his salary.

Regarding the reinstatement: Counselor had been placed on leave one week following the November 30, 2021 incident. He was later reinstated until his resignation was finalized in August of this year.
