Yesterday the judge denied the motion to drop the murder charge.

Also, the charges have been separated so that if the prosecution chooses to go for all the charges, they will need to have 2 trials.

BREAKING: Anthony Bennett, accused of killing four-year-old Carnel Chamberlain last summer, pleads guilty to second degree murder in federal court. We're working on gathering more information for a story.

Anthony Bennett pleaded guilty Tuesday in Bay City federal court. He admits killing his girlfriend's son Carnel Chamberlain while alone with the boy in June 2012. He also admits burning and burying the body.

Glad to see some sort of progress but not sure how to feel about this. Will wait to see what the sentencing looks like but it feels like too little too late :(

Frankly, I am shocked (to say the least) that he pleaded guilty. :thud:

Poor Carnel. He just didn't stand a chance against this monster.

GOOD, the . Enjoy life in prison forever. RIP Carnel.

I just hope that now they will release his remains so his family can finally lay him to rest

With his previous crimes, I hope he gets life.

He is scheduled to be sentenced March 27 at 2:30 p.m.

According to the plea arrangement, Bennett, who murdered Carnel at the home he shared with the boy’s mother on East Tomah Road in Chippewa Township June 21, 2012, is to be sentenced to 35 to 40 years in prison, according to court documents

If Bennett had been convicted of first-degree murder, he would have faced a maximum of life

Bennett’s sentence for Carnel’s murder will run concurrently with a 36-month to 10-year conviction in Bay County for assaulting a corrections officer while he was jailed on the federal charges, according to court documents.

He will also be held to a term of supervised release of up to five years, according to court documents.

Kevin Chamberlain, said he was a bit shocked that Bennett entered a plea after contending for so long that he was innocent.

Saying the plea is an important piece of the saga, Kevin said it reinforces what Carnel’s relatives always believed - that Bennett was guilty.

At the same time, Kevin said, it is a maneuver by Bennett to protect himself.

“I’m sure I can speak for the family when I say that we don’t care if he’s protected,” Kevin said.

While the plea does bring some closure, Kevin said, it does not put his mind at ease.

What are the odds that Bennett will make it through 35 years in prison? Based on his behavior, he's not going to be a model prisoner any time soon. The man is a child-killing, ticking time-bomb.

40 years is not enough. I'm disappointed a plea was offered. Bennet should be sentenced to LWOP. 40 years is not justice. It's a slap in Carnel's face. Bennet will get released and do the same thing.

I tried to get home in time Carnel to wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I know it was technically yesterday, the 16th, but since I am still up since that morning I call it good! You should be turning 6 today and getting star wars toys and toy cars and other cool stuff, and a really great cake that you get to eat for dinner!!! I hope you are enjoying your birthday up there in heaven, and remember we all love and miss you down here. Take care my angel - someday soon we will bury you and put you at eternal peace once and for all. Love you bunches!!!

Carnel has been heavy on my heart the last few days.

Hoping the sentencing is not rescheduled again. According to the article linked above sentencing is May 22nd.

There has not been any news of Jamiee Chamberlain for ages. Just drug stuff, unrelated to Carnel, in early 2013, a plea deal.

Bennett was originally scheduled to be sentenced in U.S. District Judge Thomas L. Ludington’s Bay City courtroom March 27, but the judge reset it for May 22 at 2:30 p.m.

:)
Thank you for your post Amanda.

I am looking forward to May 22 ... Just hope it doesn't get moved again. :waiting:
