Shane Lamar Evans of Sumpter Township pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder in Wayne County Circuit Court, records said. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 4, 2023. He faces up to life in prison.

Anyone reading here - can you access the Wayne County court site? I used to be able to when I lived in the U.S. - but not anymore.

I would like to know what kind of hearing Groom has on 4/14/23. I can only access the jail site & it does not say what kind of hearing it is - I thought his trial was starting - but I guess not.

One man charged in the case, Shane Evans, has already pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and, as part of a deal. He's agreed to testify against his alleged accomplices, his half-brother Timothy Moore and Shandon Groom, a cousin.

On Friday, Judge Wanda Evans said she'd allow Moore and Groom to be joined for one trial instead of two, a relief for Covington's family and those who fought to have Michigan State Police handle the case instead of Van Buren Township Police.

Moore and Groom are scheduled to go on trial in July.

A man who pleaded guilty in the 2017 murder of Egypt Covington was sentenced Thursday to 15-25 years in prison but not before asking for forgiveness from the victim's family.

Shane Lamar Evans of Sumpter Township was sentenced by Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Wanda Evans. The judge also gave him credit for serving 869 days in jail.

"There are no words that this court can say to the family to make it feel better," the judge said during the emotional hearing. "But I have to hope that the Covington family can find some peace ... in spite of what has happened. The court can only hope the family finds some way to move on in spite of this horrendous loss that you all have suffered."...

Next month marks the six-year anniversary of Egypt Covington's murder. Some closure for her family came Thursday when one of the murder suspects was sentenced to prison.

The three men charged in connection with the slaying of Egypt Covington in 2017 have pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, Michigan State Police announced Thursday.

Shandon Ray Groom and Timothy Moore, both of Toledo, had been slated to face a trial this month. But Moore entered his guilty plea Thursday, and Groom did so on July 14, Wayne County Circuit Court records show.

Both are scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 5 before Judge Wanda Evans.

A third man charged, Shane Lamar Evans of Sumpter Township, pleaded guilty in April. He was sentenced the following month to 15-25 years in prison.
