Justice Dept. watchdog blasts FBI over handling of child sexual abuse cases

The report comes three years after another report that criticized the FBI's handling of allegations against convicted sexual abuser Larry Nassar.

WASHINGTON — Three years after the Justice Department's internal watchdog slammed the FBI for its failures in the case of convicted sexual abuser and former U.S. gymnastic team doctor Larry Nassar, an audit released Thursday finds that the bureau is still failing to protect children who have been sexually abused.

The new report by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz reviewed a sample of 327 cases and found 42 that were so deficient that auditors felt compelled to contact the FBI and urge immediate attention.

In one case, the audit found that a child continued to be sexually abused for 15 months — and another child victim was abused by the same person — while the FBI failed to investigate the case. The IG reported on a separate FBI review that found another such example in which a 2-year-old was being abused for 21 months while the FBI sat on the case and failed to take investigative steps. These cases mirror what happened in the Nassar case, even though FBI Director Christopher Wray assured Congress and the public this would never happen again...

This settlement between the victims and the Justice Department resolves 139 claims, authorities said.

The Justice Department agreed to pay more than $138 million to victims of disgraced sports physician Larry Nassar and apologized for the FBI's failing to act on warnings about the convicted sex abuser, officials said Tuesday.

The "FBI failed to conduct an adequate investigation of Nassar’s conduct," Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin Mizer said in announcing the $138.7 million settlement.

“For decades, Lawrence Nassar abused his position, betraying the trust of those under his care and medical supervision while skirting accountability,” Mizer said. “These allegations should have been taken seriously from the outset. While these settlements won’t undo the harm Nassar inflicted, our hope is that they will help give the victims of his crimes some of the critical support they need to continue healing.”...

And no one in the FBI or DOJ has any consequence, this huge payout wont prevent the paychecks from still coming, the FBI/DOJ will all still get new furniture and carpet this year as always, same travel allowances etc. Abuse authority, and write a check with someone else's money.

Nessel closes probe into MSU's Nassar documents 'with no fulfilling answer'

Attorney General Dana Nessel plans to reveal the results of her investigation into previously unreleased MSU documents tied to Larry Nassar scandal.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said Wednesday she is closing her office's investigation into Larry Nassar's sexual assaults connected to Michigan State University after reviewing more than 6,000 previously unreleased university documents linked to the Nassar scandal.

“Simply put, there remains no fulfilling answer to the question of how this abuse was able to be perpetuated on so many, for so long, without MSU, or anyone else, putting a stop to it," Nessel said.

The closing of the investigation brings to an end a 6.5-year effort by Nassar victims and their allies to bring closure and healing to the scandal that shook the university.

The unreleased documents emerged in 2018 at the height of the scandal involving serial sexual predator Larry Nassar amid an investigation conducted by then-Attorney General Bill Schuette, and were released to Nessel earlier this year following years of lobbing by Nassar survivors for healing and eventually a vote by the MSU board.

Nessel questioned why the documents were not released years ago, as much of the information in the documents was not covered by attorney-client privilege, as MSU claimed, and the parts that were covered related to "tangential issues" lie public relations, insurance and funding...

Larry Nassar victims left without fulfilling answers as investigation into MSU closes

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the closure, citing withheld documents that delayed the investigation and ultimately provided no new insights.

LANSING, Mich. – After eight years, the investigation into former Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar has ended.

Nassar was sentenced in 2018 to 40 to 175 years in prison in 2018 after he admitted to sexually abusing some of the nation’s top gymnasts for years under the guise of medical treatment. The 54-year-old was initially charged with more than 20 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct but instead agreed to a plea deal.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the conclusion of the investigation Wednesday, Sept. 11.

The investigation aimed to find out who at MSU knew about the abuse and when they knew. After a review of more than 6,000 documents that were previously withheld found no new information regarding the incident, the investigation has been closed.

“To say that I am disappointed is an understatement,” Nessel said. “Simply put, there remains no fulfilling answer to the question of how this abuse was able to be perpetuated on so many, for so long, without MSU, or anyone else, putting a stop to it.”...
