Prosecutors, defense to meet on Bashara case

By George Hunter
The Detroit News

Detroit — Prosecutors and defense attorneys are scheduled to meet this afternoon to discuss the case against Robert Bashara, the Grosse Pointe Park man accused of scheming to have his former handyman killed.

A pretrial conference is set for 1 p.m. today before Wayne Circuit Judge Bruce Morrow in the case against Bashara, whom prosecutors say colluded with a furniture store owner to have his former employee, Joseph Gentz, killed in the William Dickerson Detention Facility, where Gentz is incarcerated on charges that he murdered Bashara's wife, Jane Bashara.

...

Gentz last week waived his right to a preliminary examination and was ordered to stand trial. His arraignment on information in Wayne Circuit Court originally was set for this afternoon, although it was rescheduled for Oct. 16 before Judge Vonda Evans.

Lindsey suggested during a June hearing that prosecutors and Gentz's attorney Susan Reed would work on a plea deal, although Reed said last week no deal had been reached.

Prosecutors said earlier that in taped jailhouse conversations, Bashara also indicated that he was interested in a plea deal.

What in the world does BB have to bargain with? I mean they have him dead to rights on that jail convo, plus, due to his continued antics in jail.....I just don't see him getting bond!

Bob wanted this deal for a while now ... according to this Video.

"Defence here would be: Bob Bashara was so upset that Joe Gentz murdered his wife Jane that he wanted to take JG out"

A "grieving " husband pleading guilty to trying to have the person being held responsible for his wife's death murdered. To me, all it screams is "Hey, if I pretend I was so overcome with grief that I wanted someone dead, they won't think I had anything to do with her murder, and it's less time in prison this way!"

Bob Bashara pleaded guilty as charged this afternoon to solicitation to murder Joseph Gentz, the man accused of killing Bashara’s wife.

Bashara read a statement in Wayne County Circuit Court saying that in June, he “foolishly and regrettably” tried to hire someone to kill Gentz, who is being held in the Wayne County Jail on charges of killing Jane Bashara in January.

Bob Bashara admitted he tried to hire Detroit appliance dealer Steve Tibaudo to carry out Gentz’s killing. Tibaudo earlier testified he secretly recorded conversations of Bashara soliciting the hit.

Bashara was in court today for a pretrial hearing, in advance of his trial set for next month. Prosecutors have said Bashara of Grosse Pointe Park tried to have Gentz killed because he didn’t want him to testify at any future hearings, should that opportunity arise.

...

Sentencing in the solicitation case was set for Nov. 20.

Bob Bashara plead guilty on Thursday to charges that he tried to hire someone to kill Joe Gentz, the man accused of killing Bashara's wife.

In a short statement the Wayne County Prosecutors said:

Today Bashara pleaded guilty as charged to Solicitation to Murder Joseph Gentz at a pre-trial hearing before Judge Bruce U. Morrow. The penalty for this crime is any term of years up to life in prison. Bashara will be sentenced on November 20, 2012, at 8:30 a.m.

FOX 2's Taryn Asher reports from the courtroom that Bashara could face either 51-to-85 months, or 81-to-135 months in prison under current sentencing guidelines.

Earlier this month Gentz waived his preliminary hearing and his case is headed for trial.

Bashara pleads guilty in plot to kill handyman

By George Hunter

He read a written statement: "In June of 2012, I foolishly and regrettably offered to pay Steve Tibaudo to find someone to kill Joseph Gentz. This took place in Wayne County."

Sentencing will take place on Nov. 20.

Both Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey and defense attorney Mark Kriger agreed on most of the sentencing guidelines except for the degree of victimization in the case.

The defense believes sentencing guidelines call for Bashara to serve 51-85 months; the prosecutors are calling for 81-135 months.

Prosecutors say Bashara colluded with Tibaudo, a furniture store owner, to have Gentz killed in the William Dickerson Detention Facility, where Gentz is incarcerated on charges that he killed Jane Bashara.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy also charged Gentz with solicitation of murder, meaning she believes someone else helped him slay the 56-year-old marketing executive, whose body was found inside her SUV in a Detroit alley on Jan. 25.

DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit-area man considered a person of interest in the investigation of his wife's strangulation has pleaded guilty to soliciting the murder of the man awaiting trial in her death.

Robert Bashara (buh-SHER'-uh) of Grosse Pointe Park made the plea Thursday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

A plea agreement calls for him to get a minimum sentence of four years, three months in prison at his sentencing Nov. 20.

Bashara now admits he hired a hit man to kill handyman Joe Gentz. Authorities say Bashara feared Gentz would identify him in the January death of Jane Bashara.

Gentz awaits trial on charges he murdered Jane Bashara, found dead in her car in Detroit.

Robert Bashara says he had no role in his wife's killing.

News of Bashara's plea, which could lead to at least four years in prison, drew plenty of reactions from Metro Detroiter's following a case that's made national news.

Some folks didn't appear surprised because they believe there's no way Bashara and his legal council could convince a courtroom he didn't conspire to kill Gentz.

You can find plenty of reaction about Thursday's news below; it's unclear what kind of impact Bashara's plea could have with the Jane Bashara murder trial.

Gentz is currently charged with the murder of Jane Bashara and had a in July an IQ that his defensive attorney said is hovering near mental retardation.

P.S. So as far as this charge's term is concerned ... if, say, he gets from 4 to 7 years in prison ... -- Does it mean he will have to serve the exact term, or will he be elligible to get out earlier (for good behaviour etc)?
