Authorities believe Ferguson donned body armor and armed himself with four firearms and homemade explosives before he beat and then shot Tiffany Ferguson in front of their four children in a Coldsprings Township home...

Ferguson then hauled the children to Webber's Excelsior Township home, where he shot Webber in front of one child. The children fled to a neighbor's home and Ferguson took an Orange Township woman, Kathryn McCauley, 59, hostage and eventually released her unharmed after a seven-hour standoff, authorities said.

Kalkaska court records show Ferguson's sole appearance in the local criminal justice system before this week happened in 1999, when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. The records don't indicate the victim.

Other public records show Ferguson kept a low profile. He had a clean driving record and lived in the same Northwood Lane residence for the last 10 years, according to Secretary of State records.

That changed in September, when Tiffany Ferguson filed a complaint for divorce in the local circuit court. The Fergusons were scheduled for a court appearance Friday.

Ferguson, 40, pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree and second-degree murder, but his appearance in a 46th Circuit courtroom didn't pass without incident. Judge George Mertz called a recess after an agitated Ferguson hurled profanities when asked questions about the Nov. 19 shooting deaths...

Ferguson's plea drops most of the 12 felony counts he faced in the slayings, but will keep him in prison for the rest of his life. Kalkaska County Prosecutor Mike Perreault said first-degree murder carries a mandatory penalty of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole...

Perreault said a sentencing hearing will be scheduled for within 30 days of Ferguson's plea.
