Troy priest pleads guilty to mail fraud

Detroit — A priest accused of stealing $573,000 from St. Thomas More Church in Troy pleaded guilty to mail fraud Tuesday in federal court.

“Why am I pleading guilty?” the Rev. Edward Belczak asked during his appearance before U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Tarnow. “Because I am.”

Belczak, 70, told Tarnow that he did not intend to defraud the church but used some church funds as a “loan” to purchase a condominium in West Palm Beach, Florida, in 2005. He said three months later, he returned the funds but later admitted after questioning from the prosecution that he removed that money after the church’s fiscal reporting period had ended...

Too bad they didn't go after the child molesters with the same energy. Molest a child, move to new parish. Steal from Rome and banned from priesthood. Makes a lot of sense. 😳

I just have to state that these are just two priests that broke the law, but most are honest, humble, and decent. There are two priests in my extended family and they are respected, hardworking, decent, well loved priests. One christened two of my babies and the other one christened the third.

However, a criminal is a criminal and should be treated as such regardless of who they are, IMO. We have a prison not far from here that is the second largest in the state where priests, LE officers, correctional officers, and pedophiles are housed in a unit separate from the population for security reasons. They do really hard time but they brought it on themselves.

These two priests knew it was wrong for them to do what they did and I have no sympathy for them. Regardless of all the good they did in the past, they are still criminals. I believe they should go to prison just as any other common criminal.

MOO

^ Only one of the priest brothers has been charged with a serious crime (Ed). His brother Tom was investigated but was not guilty of any crime. He has since been reinstated to his parish.

Priest who 'took what he pleased' from Detroit-area church gets 27 months in prison

Rev. Ed Belczak pleaded guilty to fraud

..."Father Belczak's crime was not an isolated incident or a momentary lapse of judgment, but an orchestrated scheme perpetrated over time to defraud the people he claimed to serve. It is a sad day when someone in a position of trust betrays that relationship, but it is important to ensure that no one is above the law," said U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade. "This sentence demonstrates that individuals will be held accountable when they steal significant sums of money that are entrusted to them." ...
