WC -21 now. nice and warm inside, sitting online all day. My grandaughter was supposed to go back to school from the Christmas Holidays today, no school today or tomorrow, probably not Wednesday.

I remember ( showing my age here) when girls weren't allowed to wear pants to school ,only skirts, dresses, and we'd have to walk to school in very cold weather. The yr. I entered 10th grade, they finally changed the dress code. But many kids had to walk back then in the skirts and dresses. Maybe that's why I dislike winter so much.

It is 6 below zero now, don't know the windchill temp but it is still quite windy and soooo cold! Gotta urge the pups to hurry outside. Put little boots on the most sensitive dog and it was hilarious watching her try to run -- she hobbled quite like a new calf.

Irisha, I remember walking about a mile to school in dresses --- when it got this cold we put slacks under them and had to take them off when we got to school.

WC -33, everytime I even think about going outside, I get brain freeze.

Stay warm.

35 something odd below here and I have a coat on under my bathrobe and my winter hat on!

the furnace cannot keep up (even have a fire going)... it is 61 degrees inside my house  everyone stay warm!!!!

Poor pups that have to go out in this. I hope their feet (or anything else) doesn't freeze to something. I saw someone post a video here, where they threw a cup of water in the air and it turned into ice cristals in mid air.

I am out of some of my meds and only have a day left of some others. I can't get out even if my car would start. I thought about trying to walk then I read about the dangers and wonder if I would make it. Tomorrow should be better.

I took a break when writing this post and I have no hot water. The pipes must be froze? I have cold water. Anyone know what I should do? I turned on the cold water faucets so they drip. ????

Not sure where your water feeding the hot water heater is located. If you have water lines in the basement I'd look down there for starters and trace the water lines to the water tank. If you have a basement whats the temp down there? Line could also be frozen below the home if you have a crawl space.

Heat can unfreeze some frozen spots.

I have read that you can use a hair dryer to thaw out internal pipes that have frozen, but please don't try to use an open flame like a torch or grill lighter! Can you take a hairdryer to the place where the pipe enters the house (basement? crawlspace?) and try to thaw it out there?

If you have a crawl space instead of a heated basement...we used to have to hook up one of those shop lightbulb things and hang it under the house near the water lines when it got frigid like it is now. We ran an outdoor extension cord from the deck. The light should give off enough heat to keep them from freezing, but can also start a fire so make sure there is nothing flammable in the area and make sure there is no exposed insulation closeby.

I hope you can get it thawed out!

Baby, it's cold outside!

Newly-added daily chore during the deep-freeze: Flush toilets and run faucets in sinks, tubs, etc. to make sure that water is still flowing. :D

Current temperature where I live is -6* with wind chill factor of -28*. Brrrr...

Stay safe and warm.

I gave up and called someone to plow this afternoon. I got up this morning and everything I had shoveled yesterday-driveway, sidewalks, porches-had drifted back over and it looks like I never even did it. My back is KILLING ME from shoveling. It will be well worth the $20.

All of the schools are closed again today as well as all government offices and lots of little businesses. That's ok. We are staying busy building a Lego city complete with police and fire stations, rocket launchpad, horse stables and pirate island. It's warm and sunny in Lego City. No snow allowed!

They also have at home improvement stores a product called heat tape that wraps around water pipes exposed outside underneath homes that wraps around pipes and then gets plugged into an extention cord and heats longer sections of pipe to keep water flowing.

It's important to carefully inspect the pipe for splits caused by freezing before thawing the pipe or it could be necessary to shut off water at the water main.

And... we are above 0*F! WC is still -18*F. We are supposed to get up to 47*F this weekend. Glad I didn't put the shorts away ;)

Hang in there - it WILL be over soon!

I think I will join you over the weekend for a game of outdoor TENNIS. Why put the shorts away:floorlaugh:

It is (-1) right now at 4:30 pm and we are just enjoying the day here. (right!!)
Floppy (the bunny) hates when I put a blanket over his cage but he was sneezing a bit last night so I figured it was better to be safe than sorry. It is not cold inside but bunnies can get sick very quickly. He seems to be better now.

I too lost my water this morning but it came back a few hours later.

Stay safe and warm everyone.

xoxo

Thanks for the suggestions on the freezing pipes everyone. I still have no hot water and the basement is warm enough that the freeze has to be near the outside wall somewhere in the basement. I'll try and get a better scope on things tomorrow when I have more light.

Owww...the spider webs or horrendous in those places that you don't typically see. I will be in attack mode with the vacuum cleaner hose tomorrow as well.

Crossing fingers in the mean time and hoping that when it warms up, things will start to flow normally again.

I might have to check that heating tape out if I can even get access to the area.

Wow! The hot water started pouring out of the bathtub, woke me up and scared me to death. I don't understand how it could thaw out like that when it's so cold.

I very happy though!!!!

The "warm up" has begun. It's currently 8* with high of 17* expected. The real-feel temp is -2*, so it's still pretty d@#$ cold. Schools are closed for the third consecutive day, but I'm sure that most kids don't mind the extended winter holiday.

I had planned to go to the gym today but DH tells me that roads are still icy. Guess that means that I'll spend the day hanging out on Websleuths.

I CAN'T TAKE ANY MORE OF THIS COLD WEATHER!!! LOL

I could tough it out since I am a born Michigander (and very proud of said fact), but this is just too cold. Added to that, it is COSTING ME TOO MUCH $$$ in propane (I live in the country) Actually, feel like I live in the Tundra the last week lol :)

36 degrees predicted for Friday. I'll take it!!!

Cold temperatures to start Thursday morning

DETROIT -
The snow is spreading over the area and it will get heavier at times through the afternoon.

It’s cold and windy for the rest of the day and the snow will be blowing around the roads making for a very rough evening commute...
