Miss California - Same Sex Marriage-Perez Hilton

I am going to attempt to be diplomatic here.......

While I believe that marriage should be legal for EVERYONE who wants to marry I do have to say that just because she has a different view doesn't mean it should be so controversial - disappointing? Yes. Surprising? No. A lot of people don't believe in same-sex marriage she just happened to announce it on national TV.

With that being said - she was pretty inarticulate, came off as ignorant, uninformed and a wee bit dim and she didn't answer the question. Perez did not ask her how she personally felt about same sex marriage but that is the answer she gave. If she has strong views on it because of the way she was raised(as she said) she probably had never even thought of the issue in any sort of objective way so it was probably difficult for her to think about it in any terms other than what her own personal belief is and why. Ultimately I think it came down to not what she said but how she said it.

It's easy for us to say how she SHOULD have answered the questions since we've had time to think about it. It's much more difficult when you don't know the question before hand and you're in front of an audience.

I think one of the contestants was asked how she got her childhood nickname. It is unfair to ask one such a bland question and another a question that is going to offend some no matter how she answers it. Questions like that have no place in the Miss America contest. It seems a shame that this young lady has worked so hard for this contest to have something like this thrown at her in the final stages. I predict though that she may get more exposure and be more in demand than the winner is.

I agree. I have no problem with them asking controversial, current event topics. However, all of them should have a controversial, current event question. Or they should all be personal, anecdotal questions. If the point is for them to be aware and up to date on current events, then they should all be tested on that. If the point is to see how well they think and respond on their feet, then give them fluffy, fun questions. Every one knows that when you do an employee interview, you can't ask them all different questions and then compare the results to see who you liked better. It is comparing apples to oranges. You are suppose to ask the same questions so you can compare the answers to see who is the better candidate.

also, I so agree with this
Perez needs a spanking, duh, don't ask someone's opinion if you don't want to know it! It is an opinion and everyone is entitled to it. I'm proud that she held fast to her belief and didn't try to appease him.

and Ziggy while I disagree that is was an unfair question, I so agree with this part of your post
...Funny how those who insist on tolerance have the least of it to give.

I think if any of the other contestants would have picked that judges name, he would have asked a complete different question. It appears to me that it was directed at California specifically because he is mad at the State for the way they voted on gay marriage.

I agree with alot here, she was honest, said how she felt. There is always going to be people that won't agree or like what you have to say no matter what the topic or agenda is.

I posted this on another thread but it seems pertinent here as well:

As for Ms. Cally's response, I've heard WAY worse and more embarrassing flub-ups from beauty pageant contestants responding on the spot to questions. I have a different opinion on the issue and think it's becoming increasingly obvious that, like inter-racial marriages, gay marriages will eventually become legal countrywide. She tried to acknowledge both sides of the issue and state her own thoughts - nothing wrong with that. I think it's a little funny that it's caused such an uproar.

That's a great point and I agree 100%. I didn't watch it, so didn't know - I actually just heard Ms. Cal's response on the radio this a.m. and, like I said in my above post, it just didn't seem all that scandalous.

Some Repub party leaders are asking their party to come into a pro-platform on the issue - that would be great for the Repub party and I hope it happens.

I didnt see it. But I wonder if she never really thought about that question, and just stumbled alot, not wanting to offend anyone.

Perez argh . I don't go to his website but he sits there and judges people about clothes, if they gain weight ect.. Gives them horrible nicknames. Really how can anyone let him judge a show like miss usa?? Obviously if your not in his circle and dont belive in what he does or have no money, he will pick on you.
If he was a good person, he would of excepted the answer and just leave it like that. Everyone is allowed to have opinions.... HE does.

Not only only does he judge others clothing etc. but he also draws semen (can I say that here) dribbles on people's faces and coke in their noses. I agree, keeponsearching, he had no business judging the Miss USA pageant.

I thought this was the MISS AMERICA/USA pageant, not the Miss "Politically Correct You Had Better Suck Up to The Elite and now, DEVIANT Judges Who Really Run Things" Pageant.

(Deviant IMO because of what he gets away with in terms of puerile sexually disgusting attempts for attention that he gets only because he has money.)

In this respect in my heart SHE IS THE REAL MISS AMERICA/USA because she held true to her (1) freedom to have a mind of her own, even while female - hello Perez Hilton! (2) freedom to express such, mindfully and respectfully disagreeing with a pageant Judge's opinion (3) this is the land of the free and home of the brave and she fits that bill. Plus she is drop dead gorgeous. And obviously TOO SMART for them all.

Steamed she lost "because of her opinion". I would like to start a vote to remove Hilton of ever having anything to do with another female pageant show. He wins My UGLIEST PERSON OF THE DECADE award.

First off, who the heck is Perez H really? Some loser guy who started a blog and makes his money off treating people like CRAP. Why is this guy even a judge at Miss America? God- He's always made me sick and I refuse to watch anything he has an appearance on. He's rude, crude, and if you don't agree with HIM, then he dogs you. He's foolish, and I think it was a dumb idea to have this D-list (can there be a z-list) judge.

Now that I said that. There is no right, and no wrong way to answer the question that was asked of her. So what if this girl has different beliefs then Perez. Its one of the only RIGHTS we have left... our freedom to have our own opinions. I give her credit for answering the way she believed rather than being a coward in front of Perez and give an answer that HE WANTED TO HEAR.

Perez H is a trainwreck. He shouldn't be a judge on Miss America. That was a huge mistake.

So stupid.

Meh... It's a pageant. Not filled with brainiacs and astrophysicists. Her answer was just par for course in pageants IMO. Remember last year (or year before?) when that girl messed up her geography big time??

And Paris Hilton was at a pageant because it was a .... pageant. Can you tell I don't like pageants?

The question in and of itself was reasonable. It was about "should other states follow VTs lead in leagalizing same sex marriages." She didn't answer the question. She didin't need to get into her own views - She could have simply said something about each state's right to make their own laws. As someone who actually judges pageants, I would have marked her down, not for her opinion, but for A) her inability to answer the question that was asked and B) her inability to articulate her views clearly. That's why she lost --Miss USA is 90% PR, and she can't even answer in complete sentences!

Thanks for posting this.....the problem being she didn't answer the question.....he wasn't asking for her personal opinion on gay marriage...he asked if other states should follow suit, why or why not. She could have easily said the decision should be left to the states and/or the state's voters to decide. She stuck her foot in her mouth by instead answering with her own personal view of gay marriage...not whether states should follow suit. And since she was representing California.....that would have been the perfect answer.

I didn't know that! Interesting.

Does anyone know if she was in the lead before she answered that question? I'm just wondering if her answer was what caused her to lose.

Shoot, wished I had watched it now. Back in the day I NEVER missed one

Oh Gibby, you just cracked me up! I swear if I didn't know better, I would think you are my younger sister!

After your post I'm going to flipflop and say - in context she could have gone with the issue of State's Rights and completely avoided the gay marriage issue.

ON THE OTHER HAND: I wish she would have said,
" I AGREE WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA AND ELTON JOHN ON THIS ISSUE AND THAT IS THAT QUOTE MARRIAGE UNQUOTE SHOULD REMAIN BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN. LOOK IT UP PEEPS."

Stick that in your (another word for small furry rodent associated with Mr. Gere) and (insert your own word here) it! Hope that doesn't get me a warning here...I kid...I kid.

Miss California Carrie Prejean was neck-in-neck with winner Miss North Carolina, Kristen Dalton, going into the interview portion of Sunday's Miss USA competition. After the evening and swimsuit section, the two top beauty queens had only .36 separating them.

Pop Tarts has learned that twelve questions are submitted prior to the pageant, and six are then chosen to be randomly drawn from a hat and asked to the top 5 contestants. Which means the organization knew the controversial question was in the mix, though probably not that Prejean would get it.

Perez is yuck but he's not going anywhere. His site gets millions of hits and he's going to be all over TV, Internet, etc. for some time. There apparently are zillions who LIKE his site and the things he has to say. I haven't read his site in ages. He's just not funny.

She tried, but in my opinion, no matter what her answer was, she still sounded like an idiot. Her "opposite marriage" comment and other blunders made her sound rediculous. Not to mention sound like an ignorant bigot...but that's just my opinion. If I was in her place, and IF I disagreed with gay marriage, I would say something like, "I personally do not agree with gay marriage, however, this is America, and all people should have equal rights and protections. Even though homosexuality is against my personal beliefs and convictions, I believe all people are equal." Or something other than what she said.

Now, I didn't see the pagent, so I don't know anything about the other contestants or questions, but political questions seem pretty common. And with the recent developments with gay marriage, I think it was a fair question. Just because a gay man asked it doesn't make it unfair or having an agenda. Controversial and/or political questions make the contestants think on their feet. It's only fair.

That would have been an excellent response, indeed! Unfortunately, when we're thrown a question that puts us on the spot, and have little time to think about our answer, sometimes the answer may not sound as articulate as we'd like. I do wish she had just used the words "homosexual or same-sex" and heterosexual rather than "opposite" marriage lol.

Now, I wish she would not have responded to Perez Hilton's rants, by saying she "feels sorry for him", praying for him ,etc.

She should have kept quiet and let him act like an idiot. Is she trying to get press now? Probably. Soon she'll have a reality show or be the next "Dancing with the Stars" contestant.
