Hi, PC. ADD or ADHD requires extensive testing to diagnose; in my professional opinion, it is often over-diagnosed, applied to children with chaotic home lives who have difficulties in school for many reasons: lack of discipline, abuse from caretakers, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep, undiagnosed medical problems, or depression. Some kids with terrible home lives may be so far behind by the upper elementary grades (4th-6th) that there really is no catching up.

But there is no way even a doctor can diagnose ADD or ADHD without testing (although some schools, to their shame, send notes home asking parents to get the family doctor to put a troublesome kid on Ritalin.) I am not aware of the new brain scans (you are giving me homework, there) but most ADD/ADH kids are sent to specialists in this area. A friend of mine has a son with ADD who went through two days of testing before he got a diagnosis. You may well be right that Misty has one of these conditions or some other condition, and you are very, very correct in saying that many learning disabilities are not correlated with the usual forms of "intelligence" kids use in school. From what little I know of Misty's background, though, my guess is that her difficulties in school had multiple causes--some environmental, some physiological, some emotional.

Pittsburg and Helplessly, you will have to admit that "testing" for ADD is comprised of a questionarie that has been submitted to teachers and parents and there is no physiological testing. Although you may also agree that
brain patterns and responses are now testable and it would make sense
that somewhere a test exists but maybe is not readily available because of expense, etc. As to the situation that ADD may be overly given as the diagnosis of children with behavior problems, I could agree somewhat although I do know it is a valid diagnosis and one that is greatly misunderstood. We shall always have those who insist their children do not have ADD and refuse treatment. I think more have it than not and it is a sign of the times we live in for specific reasons. But, I haven't got the constitution to go into detail any more in my life over it. I think it fits Misty but there could be other factors, I don't know her. No matter maybe we can agree that some problem exists and some type of therapy would benefit her in the long run. These are just my opinions except Pittsburgh, I do know that I read that testing in some form that provides physical evidence was told to me several years ago, I don't remember where I got the information.

I am in NO way disputing ADD may well be an issue for Misty--early drug use is another dead giveaway--but I think her problems are deeper than the ADD that I or others close to me have....:blowkiss:

Hello ya'll. I am a newbie here but I would like to add my $0.02 to the ADD conversation. I am a 50 something adult with both ADD and ADHD. I am a two time college graduate and have never taken any of the drugs that are being prescribed for it. My drug of choice is caffeine and that does the trick for me.

To me, and this is only my personal opinion, Misti has some problems. For one I believe that she is a pathological liar. I have also heard that she tends to tell lies about what her early life was like and that the family never lived in cars and so forth. There is also some question in my mind about the whole "abuse" that she supposedly suffered at the hands of her brother/cousin. My main reason for this because the person doing the abusing changes at times.

Missingmeds, welcome, glad to have you.

Since the information we have is that Misty's parents were drug abusers, I find that part of her story probable. But, that is just my opinion and I really know nothing, lol.

I have never heard the interview Kiki posted with the lady at the bus stop. It just makes me want to cry. In all the pics of Ronald and HaLeigh, she looks so happy and seems to adore her Daddy. Now I'm wondering just what kind of life these children were living. Was Misty given free rein when it came to the children? I would think if she treated them badly, they would have told TN or Crystal. I don't know, this case has me totally bumfuddled. I generally tend to look at the good in people and try not to concentrate on the bad, but these folks make it hard not to see the bad in them.

Having taught and worked with LD and ES kids...I have an observation....

the "tell" with Misty is really simple....If you observe her in non-Haleigh conversation--she is quite cohesive in her speech patterns...think of her bubbling engagement ring video...but when you observe her discussing Haleigh...well--her speech patterns are much different...Why the switch? The ability to turn it off and on suggests that a decent intellect....the question is in the why she turns it off and on...JMO

"Statement Analysis" is used by LE agencies to detect lying. There are indeed "tells"' as you put it. Mark McClish has an interesting website that shows what differences are "telling." We already know she is lying; statement analysis might show what she is lying ABOUT. But I think LE already has that figured out, or at least I hope so.

However,

Here is a good description of the current diagnostic process from the NIMH, part of a longer article that also discusses current ideas about causes of ADD.ADHD:

No single test can diagnose a child as having ADHD. Instead, a licensed health professional needs to gather information about the child, and his or her behavior and environment. A family may want to first talk with the child's pediatrician. Some pediatricians can assess the child themselves, but many will refer the family to a mental health specialist with experience in childhood mental disorders such as ADHD. The pediatrician or mental health specialist will first try to rule out other possibilities for the symptoms. For example, certain situations, events, or health conditions may cause temporary behaviors in a child that seem like ADHD.
Between them, the referring pediatrician and specialist will determine if a child:
Is experiencing undetected seizures that could be associated with other medical conditions
Has a middle ear infection that is causing hearing problems
Has any undetected hearing or vision problems
Has any medical problems that affect thinking and behavior
Has any learning disabilities
Has anxiety or depression, or other psychiatric problems that might cause ADHD-like symptoms
Has been affected by a significant and sudden change, such as the death of a family member, a divorce, or parent's job loss.
A specialist will also check school and medical records for clues, to see if the child's home or school settings appear unusually stressful or disrupted, and gather information from the child's parents and teachers. Coaches, babysitters, and other adults who know the child well also may be consulted.
The specialist also will ask:
Are the behaviors excessive and long-term, and do they affect all aspects of the child's life?
Do they happen more often in this child compared with the child's peers?
Are the behaviors a continuous problem or a response to a temporary situation?
Do the behaviors occur in several settings or only in one place, such as the playground, classroom, or home?

The specialist pays close attention to the child's behavior during different situations. Some situations are highly structured, some have less structure. Others would require the child to keep paying attention. Most children with ADHD are better able to control their behaviors in situations where they are getting individual attention and when they are free to focus on enjoyable activities. These types of situations are less important in the assessment. A child also may be evaluated to see how he or she acts in social situations, and may be given tests of intellectual ability and academic achievement to see if he or she has a learning disability.
Finally, if after gathering all this information the child meets the criteria for ADHD, he or she will be diagnosed with the disorder.

Everyone here has added important information. Members of my husband's family have some sort of unidentified learning disability that at times looks like ADD/ADHD. I'm not sure the problem is increasing, but our culture has changed--larger classes, more additives and other chemicals in food, more expectation that kids sit still all day and do seatwork. I overheard a father and a little boy (maybe 7 or 8). The father asked what they did at recess and the son said, "We don't get recess." Twenty or thirty years ago, people with problems like ADD could get good labor jobs that use different training techniques. And I really agree that early drug use can be a big tip-off. Some of these kids use alcohol and marijuana to self-medicate. In Misty's case, however, it would take a long time to sort out what might be her brain wiring from birth (which could have been affected by a mother's smoking AND/OR genetic predisposition), what might have been caused by environment (abuse, neglect, poor nutrition, chemical exposure, chaotic home environment) and trauma (sexual abuse, traumatic family change, etc.).

Here is the audio recording of interview w parent who describes how Misty treated the children at the bus stop on the last afternoon Haleigh was ever seen. Please judge for yourself, just thought you'd want to hear straight from the 'horse's mouth.' HTH

Thank you for the video, Kiki. I believe, and we have to remember Misty was most likely going through withdrawals from other drugs as well from her weekend bender which would make her all the more irritable than she may normally be in general..

I wonder if the "hitting" might have been so frequent by both Ron and Misty (possibly even CS) that the children would have thought it wasn't unusual to be hit and wouldn't have mentioned it to anyone because it was nothing out of the normal for them. Bruises on small children from physical abuse can often be passed off as the result of falls and minor accidents. Not saying it was happening frequently, but seems that Misty thought nothing of hitting a child in the presence of others. JMO

Beatrice...thank you for reposting this information. I have always thought this is what may have happened. I have been questioning this from day one. I hope and pray this attorney can do something if all this is true. What a travesty! For this kid of sixteen at the time to be convicted for 8 yrs as an adult in an adult prison is sickening if he did not do this crime.

Even concerning Haleigh, Misty just doens't show any regret. When asked, she feels bad for herself but doesn't feel any responsibility whatsoever. Frankly, this scares the jeebeezies out of me.

Okay where did my posts go and why were they taken down? I cleared all that I posted thru a moderator before I posted about it.

I don't see any records posted here. The records are sealed and we do not have access to them. The only thing in question is did they lie to the judge....it is possible, isn't it?

The problem with a bunch of people in this case is that they have by now established a reputation for willingness to mislead, confuse and be liberal with the definition of the truth that they must eventually find their credibility diminished and will have people reacting with knee jerk suspicion and extremely sarcastic "yeah, right..." whatever they say. Of course liars can be victims of horrible crimes too, but it may be a pain getting people to take their word only.

You should PM Tricia. Like someone told you, we have been told from the start that this is topic is off limits. Discussing it on the board when the posts have been deleted is not the best idea, IMO.

And was investigated and the allegations were false!

Hard to prove allegations when hitting is not being done when DCF arrives...

Welcome Missingmeds....Don't let the disappearance of your posts deter you.

...sorry about what happened. I appreciated your posts and fortunately I copied it for prosperity.
