Jewel Sky Fineday died on Christmas Day in 2022 after being starved to death - with the US Attorney's Office saying she was "not just thin, but skeletal" when found by authorities at the Red Lake Indian Reservation. Her father Julius Fineday Sr., 42, pleaded guilty to felony child neglect.

Jewel Sky Fineday, “Miikawaddizimikinaakikezens” meaning “Beautiful Turtle Girl”, age 7, of the Bear Clan and Ponemah, MN journeyed to the spirit world on Sunday, December 25, 2022, from Red Lake IHS. She was born on September 24, 2015, in Bemidji, MN, the daughter of Tessa (Jones) and Julius Fineday.

Jewel loved to spend time watching TikTok on her dad’s phone. When she wasn’t watching videos, she would be playing hide and go seek and tag with her siblings and cousins. Jewel was a very quiet girl and when Grandpa would sing and beat his drum, she would dance just hard and out dance all the other kids. Jewel was always concerned about her dad, always making sure he was happy. She will be missed greatly by everyone who knew her. She loved the “Cat” and would hide the “Cat” when she was told to throw the cat out. She loved turtle especially sea turtles.

Greeting Jewel in the spirit world are her grandfather, Virgil Jones; great-grandparents, Philip and Alice Fineday, Myron and Vivian Rosebear, Margaret Miller-Dow, and William Jones, Sr.

The girl's grandmother and Julius' mother, Sharon Marie Rosebar, 63, was convicted on April 30 on the same charges. Her sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

During the father's sentencing, Judge Patrick Schiltz clarified Jewel did not starve because there was a lack of food in the household, but because Julius neglected his child in 'nearly every way' possible.

Schiltz said that he hopes that through his sentencing, other parents will understand that 'neglecting or abusing a child will result in negative consequences not only for the child, but also the responsible adult.'

Schiltz added that he hopes parents will consider Julius' fate and decide to 'pick up the phone' to ask for help in taking care of their children.
