I have to wonder how George Floyd's family and community feels about this trailoff, I mean tradeoff, of justice for him, imo...

I hope justice has been well served, but it certainly can't make up for him losing his life !

Rest In Peace, George <3

Your legacy is an inspiration to all of us !

Only The Good Die Young !

Attorney General Keith Ellison kept a diary in 2021 as he directed the prosecution of former police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. Tuesday, the world will be able to read those diaries.

"Break the Wheel: Ending the Cycle of Police Violence," will be published by 12 Books, with a foreword by Floyd's brother Philonise and blurbs from former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Ben Crump, who represented the Floyd family.

Tawana Washington becomes emotional while speaking about her daughter, Astarte Washington, on May 24, 2023. Astarte was run over by a Chicago police vehicle in May 2020 and is still recovering from her injuries.

As protests over the murder of George Floyd roiled the city on May 31, 2020, Astarte Washington, then 15, and her brother were trying to get from their grandmother’s house to their Roseland home on foot because the unrest had shut down the bus route.

Police ordered the teens to the ground and Washington complied, so afraid of being shot that she remained still, her mother said, even as a Chicago police squad car rolled over her body, seriously injuring her.

Nearly at the three-year anniversary of the protests, Astarte Washington, now 18, still has marks on her body from the squad car, her mother said. She struggles with trauma. The family is suing the city and the Chicago Police Department, with the case now at a key moment as the parties are nearly ready to set a trial date, likely for later this year.

Minneapolis and its police department engage in a pattern of violating people's rights through the unnecessary, unjustified use of deadly force and discrimination, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Friday after a two-year investigation following George Floyd’s death.

A 92-page Justice Department report found the police:

  • Use excessive force, including unjustified deadly force.
  • Unlawfully discriminate against Black and Native American people in its enforcement activities.
  • Violate the rights of people engaged in speech protected by the First Amendment.
  • Discriminate along with the city against people with behavioral health disabilities during calls for assistance.
"MPD uses unreasonable force, infringes on First Amendment rights, and discriminates based on race and disability," the report said. "MPD also lacks the systemic safeguards that can prevent or address those abuses, such as effective accountability, rigorous training, robust supervision, and appropriate officer support."

Derek Chauvin, the man who killed George Floyd, will take the appeal of his state murder conviction to the Supreme Court after Minnesota’s top court denied the request to hear his petition.

“We will petition the United States Supreme Court via a Writ of Certiorari and ask them to review the lower court’s decision on behalf of Mr. Chauvin,” attorney Gregory M. Erickson said in a statement Wednesday.

The Minnesota Supreme Court denied Chauvin’s appeal without comment in a one-page filing dated Tuesday.

MINNEAPOLIS -- One of the officers involved in the murder of George Floyd, Tou Thao, will be sentenced on Monday [8/7/23].

RELATED: Tou Thao found guilty of aiding and abetting manslaughter in George Floyd's death

Thao was found guilty on one count of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. He is the last of the four former police officers to be sentenced in the state's cases.

Minnesota guidelines recommend a four-year sentence on the manslaughter count, which Thao would serve at the same time as his 3 1/2-year sentence for his federal civil rights conviction, which an appeals court upheld on Friday. But Cahill has some latitude and could hand down a sentence from 41 to 57 months.

Minnesota inmates generally serve two-thirds of their sentences in prison and one-third on parole. There is no parole in the federal system but inmates can shave time off their sentences with good behavior.

"Minneapolis cop is sentenced to nearly five years in prison for aiding and abetting killing of George Floyd - as judge blasts him for 'preaching' in court and not showing remorse.

The judge sentenced him to six months more than prosecutors had suggested.

'I was hoping for a little more remorse, regret, acknowledgment of some responsibility. And less preaching,'
Judge Peter Cahill said to Thao during sentencing on Monday."
