Demetrius Wynne, who turned 19 on Thursday, has been charged with second-degree murder with intent and second-degree murder while committing a felony for the slaying of Spiller, 68, in July 2015.

Wynne was arrested and charged as a juvenile in June 2019, thus keeping his identity private until a Hennepin County judge ruled in favor of adult certification on Oct. 29. Had the judge denied adult certification, Wynne would've only been kept on probation for two years, according to Freeman.

Spiller was found dead in her home in north Minneapolis on Dupont Ave. N. after an apparent home invasion July 2015. The crime scene was so violent that authorities determined her cause of death to be from "complex homicidal violence."

“This was a home burglary and brutal killing and by no stretch of the imagination would two years be sufficient for either punishment or rehabilitation. Now we will focus on proving Mr. Wynne guilty beyond a reasonable doubt," Freeman said in a release.

A new criminal complaint charging Wynne as an adult explains that Wynne lived next door to Spiller. He's accused of breaking into her home through a back window sometime during the evening of July 15-16, with Spiller being found dead in her bedroom.

The complaint says Spiller was beaten, strangled and stabbed five times.

The case had gone cold until a break came June 12, 2019, when fingerprints from the murder scene were found to match Wynne, whose fingerprints were documented in an unrelated felony case after he turned 18.

Spiller was the vice-chair of the Lind-Bohanon Neighborhood Association and an artist known for her glasswork and lampshades, in addition to being a local activist.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office filed a petition to have Wynne certified as an adult. The request was granted by a judge on Nov. 19.

Court documents show Demetrius Wynne, 19, was 14 years old at the time of the murder of Susan Spiller in 2015. A demand for a jury trial was made, and the trial is set to begin on June 1, 2020.

According to the complaint, Wynne was charged with second-degree murder with intent and second-degree murder while committing a felony in July 2015 after the death of Spiller.

According to the new adult criminal complaint, Wynne and his family lived next door to Spiller at 5116 Dupont Avenue N. in Minneapolis. Sometime in the evening of July 15 or 16, 2015, someone cut the screen to a rear window of Spiller's home and removed it to gain entry into the house. Spiller was found in her bedroom, where she had been beaten, strangled and stabbed five times, and her cellphone was missing.

On June 12, 2019, Wynne was booked and fingerprinted on an adult felony case, which is pending. Two days later, the computer matched his booking fingerprints to prints taken from the rear window of Spiller's home, the complaint states. Also, a DNA profile from a fingernail clipping from Spiller's right hand has been connected to Wynne.
