Let's stop beating around the bush about the motivations for wanting this officer's name released (or hacked) at THIS particular point in time-- during the serious and unstable riots going on.

The groups that are advocating violence (Anonymous and New Black Panthers), are telling their "faithful supporters" (rioters) to hunt down and seriously hurt, or kill, if possible, this officer. IMO, and the opinions of a whole lotta others, lol! There is NO other reason to "hack" the name of this officer. They want mob justice. IMO, of course!

is that why lots of legal experts and scholars also think it should be released? there is a reasonable position on why it should be released, it is the same reason it is almost always released fairly quickly.

i agree that the decision to withhold it seems valid in this case, but you dont have to be in favor of vigilante justice to think it should have been released by now either.

Will the REAL Anonymous please stand up? Can't most people claim to be Anonymous online.

Coming Up Live: Obama To Address Violence In Iraq; Violence In St. Louis Suburb @12:15pm http://www.myfoxdc.com/category/233074/live-news-video …

The only thing the President should be saying is how dismayed he is about the riots and violence, and how he has faith in the state and local law enforcement to take measures to quell the riots. He should not mention race or the shooting AT ALL, IMO. It is highly inappropriate for the President to make any comment on those things, particularly at this point in time. IMO.

A riot is a riot. It is criminal domestic violence and terrorism, no matter who is doing it, what color their skin is, or what their "culture" or religion is. It matters not if it is a riot in the Middle East, a riot over religion, poverty, race, or a stupid football game. The RIOT BEHAVIOR is illegal, inappropriate, and ineffective for accomplishing anything other than domestic terrorism. The focus should be on STOPPING the RIOTS and arresting and punishing the ones carrying out the activity. THEN and only then, can any meaningful dialogue begin about what people THINK the "reason" is behind the riots.

The ones throwing Molotov cocktails, destroying police vehicles, burning and looting businesses are CRIMINALS.

And yes, my opinions are colored by my more than 17 years of military service, including deployment to the Middle East-- active duty, as well as reserve. A riot is a riot. Anywhere on earth. It doesn't matter what clothes they wear, what language they speak, or to whom they pray, or don't. A riot is a riot. It's terrorism. We need to stop pretending a riot is a peaceful protest.

it would do some people well to also stop pretending that every gathering over the past 5 days has been a "riot", a very small amount of the time over the last 5 days would be considered "riot" conditions.

The reason it hasn't been released, IMO, is precisely because of the immensely high risk of vigilante justice, and the ongoing riots. There can be no justice, UNTIL there is peace. The peace has to come first.

The officer's name will come out in due time. It should, and it will. We need to sort this out peacefully, and lawfully. And that can't happen while criminals are looting and rioting and hurting people.

i dont disagree with any of that, but i would add that the reason it is not being released is equally because they want to have more answers to put things in context before they release it, same as with the ME report. which is specifically because of the particular outrage over this incident so basically we are in agreement.

Not sure I would use the word "justice", they want mob violence.

In the case of Anonymous they are a bunch of sheltered messed up kids, in the case of the New Black Panthers, they want to start a war. Or at least they think they do.

I don't like that someone's child, who got shot in the back, turns with his hands up, going on his knees is executed...no it has a funky smell to it...

Respectfully snipped. This is only rumor and hearsay, at this point in time. There has been no official announcement of the specific nature of MB's injuries, nor the police report of exactly what happened. There is also rumor that the officer has a broken jaw and his eye is swollen shut. That hasn't been officially announced yet, either.

what do you make of the fact that 4 independent witnesses are now on video stating that he seemed to be trying to get away from the vehicle, that he was never inside the vehicle, that he was shot from inside the vehicle once, that he fled and was shot again while fleeing, that he then turned with his hands raised and was shot multiple more times until he fell face first to the pavement?

The have no right to tell reporters where or what they can film. It is illegal. Reporters are embedded with our troops all the time in war zones.

The FPD are trampling on the freedom of the press. imo

Slippery slope.

Respectfully, reporters embedded with military troops is vastly not the same thing as bloggers and official media showing up at a riot. And embedded reporters are pretty controversial, BTW. Remember when Geraldo Rivera started announcing strategy live? Embedded reporters have a LOT of rules about their reporting, and their personal behavior. Embedded reporters are not an equivalent comparison to bloggers and media reporters in a riot zone. The embedded reporters actually have more rights and responsibilities than the civilian reporters and bloggers.

We're going through this right now in Austin. There is a huge movement to videotape any police/citizen interaction, and the laws are becoming quite clear. Yes, cops can move videotapers to an area where everyone else is being asked to go to. So, a citizen can't approach a cop with a videotape devise closer than other citizens are allowed to approach while not videoing. Videotapers are allowed to videotape with zoom, and nothing can be done to confiscate their video. But they are not allowed to impede police work, and aren't allowed to demand that because they are taping they have access to an area legally denied to other citizens.

But then again, here, cops are REQUIRED to flip on their videocamera in their car anytime they stop a citizen and interact with them. Failing to do so can result in serious penalties - I believe including firing.

I heard what they have to say. I haven't decided yet how much weight to give to the truthfulness of their reports, because we don't have anywhere near the full story, and we most certainly do not have the police story of the altercation. I also believe that the witnesses are heavily biased against the police, so I am skeptical of their perception of what happened. I'm keeping an open mind, but my tendencies are to believe that no officer on duty would, for "no reason", empty his service revolver into a teenager without a very compelling provocation.

I realize there are rogue cops, and want to hear more about what happened. But until someone proves to me that the officer was acting unlawfully, or with undue force, I will respect the actions of LE. And there have been official statements that the officer was assaulted, requiring a trip to the ER with face/ head injuries. Assaulting a police officer is a pretty serious thing. Especially if the police officer was assaulted INSIDE his squad car. IMO.

If it turns out he was a rogue cop, he will pay for it, IMO. If not, he should be protected for doing his job. (And his family.)
