Remains found in park believed to be missing Chinese woman

The remains and personal property believed to belong to Mengqi Ji Elledge were found Thursday afternoon by someone walking in Rock Bridge State Park in Boone County. Columbia Mayor Brian Treece and Columbia Police Chief Geoff Jones announced the find Thursday evening.

Authorities said DNA testing would be done to confirm that the remains are Ji’s.

Banking info, driver's license of Mengqi Ji found with human remains at Rock Bridge Memorial State Park - ABC17NEWS

Columbia police are investigating a death at Rock Bridge Memorial State Park near Columbia.

A Columbia Police Department officer at the scene said a hiker found badly decomposed human remains Thursday. Police blocked off Rock Quarry Road at the High Ridge trailhead during the investigation.

The remains found Thursday will go through DNA testing and/or dental records to confirm the identity.

‎Assistant Police Chief Jeremiah Hunter said personal property that fit the description of what Ji was last seen in when she went missing. Hunter said they found bank, credit card documents and a driver's license that were Ji's with the human remains.

The human remains discovery changes the Joseph Elledge prosecution

This is new evidence that could bring forward a conviction in the case. This changes the entire case. Previously, there was concern with convicting Elledge of murder without physical evidence.

"This development changes the entire course of the case. You now have forensics, which is going to come in. We've got the cellphone, which was the basis for being out at the Lamine River," Bill Tackett former Cole County prosecutor said. Now you're shifting to Rockbridge. There is no cellphone coverage at Rockbridge. If you're looking at this as juror it's the body's at Rockbridge the cellphone's at the Lamine River but there's no cellphone coverage at Rockbridge."

While the discovery of Mengqi Ji's body could lead to a possible conviction, it's not a guarantee.

Prosecutors were originally relying on cell phone signal evidence and the theory that Elledge had dumped his wife's body in the Lamine River.

This new information could delay the trial set for November 1 and extend the investigation process.

From this article :

Ji was working as a supervisor at Nanova, a Columbia company that makes material for dental products and dentures, Salladay wrote. This is where Ji met Elledge. She was his supervisor.

After the birth of their daughter, Ji stopped working at Nanova and instead cared for their daughter at their home. Ji's daughter still was breastfeeding when Ji was killed.

That last line is heartbreaking. Poor baby girl was probably extremely confused about why Mommy was no longer feeding her. :(

These cases are SO absolutely heartbreaking. That the husband/father would have no empathy or concern for anyone else, let alone his own infant daughter. Now she will have none. No parents. At least the maternal grandparents have custody.

MOO IMO

Do they? Last I heard they shared temporary custody with the smirking mother in law of the victim.

They are? I hadn’t seen that. Where’s the report about that? If they are, then the smirking mother in law must have sole custody of the baby whose mother her son murdered. Ugh.

I heard a report that stated her family was contacted in China, but can't find it now, so sorry. I'll keep looking.. I agree about the smirking mother in law, terrible.

Stephanie Golda, a forensic anthropologist at Columbia College, told ABC 17 News on Friday that human remains still hold information.
