Missouri is a rural state, with few high-profile cases (aside from Shawn Hornbeck). But in the same areas, there seem to be abduction or murder cases that seem identical.

Is it possible that these abductions and murders could have been committed by the same culprit? NOTE: I am NOT saying they are all definitely connected, I am saying they MAY be connected.

Amanda Caudill: Woman missing from St James MO

I decided these cases, or at least some, could be connected. These were all young women, most of them in their teens, (the average age is 19) with some of these cases indicating an abduction. Some were heard screaming and some got into vehicles.

Some were seen leaving work, some going to or from friend’s houses or school. 12 of these 17 incidents took place between March and August. Quite a number of these seem to have suspicious circumstances.

There seem to be two main groups. Those leaving work to go to a parked car, or a young girl walking alone and being coerced or pulled into a vehicle. The Springfield Three and Amanda Caudill seem to have been abducted from their homes, but maybe the killer had spotted them earlier?

What is puzzling is that after 1997 there seems to be a large gap, with only four having occurred after that year. If it is the same person or persons, maybe they went to prison?

Now, these might NOT be related and I am not suggesting that they are. I am saying that some of these seem to share similarities and distance.

Could it be the I-70 killer? Could it be someone else? Whatever the answer, I think that this idea should certainly be considered. How come most of these women are still missing? Missouri is, as I said before, quite a rural state, with plenty of room to discard a body if you knew the place.

If it is the same killer, he may use a vehicle for work or have family in different parts of the state. I just want these cases to be solved and the families given peace.

I don't know if this is related but it stuck out to me when you said there was a gap in the cases in 1997. Clark Perry Baldwin is labeled as a serial killer he is currently behind bars for three murdered women. He did live in Springfield, Missouri during the 90's also he went to prison in 1997 for counterfeiting money he spent 18 months in prison. Authorities believe he has other victims out there that have yet to be linked to him.

What to know about Clark Perry Baldwin, Iowa man charged with killings

I’m from St. Louis, went to college in Columbia and lived in KC for a bit. My speculation with a few of these are that they are related to sex/human trafficking and not a SK. There’s a big trafficking hotspot in these towns because of their proximity to multiple highways. When I lived in downtown KC our complex posted warnings of attempted abductions at nearby gas stations. I looked for the articles for a bit, but couldn’t find the one that mentions these. Here’s one that talks about the hotspots: https://makehumantraffickinghistory.org/missouri-still-hotspot-human-trafficking/

First off, GREAT WORK EARTH for your comprehensive compilation of these cases!

It is possible
It is possible that some of these are connected. I looked at many of these cases recently. It seems that many of them came up missing from near freeways. Some are also within a very short time frame of each other.

Snatching a child off a bike seems to me a rather different crime than talking a woman into a car at a bar.
Age of victim (victimology,) month & year of event....
JMHO YMMV LRR

I agree with Earth and all of these comments. I tried to narrow it down to these particular cases listed below that are similar in victimology, location, time frame of disappearances (and murders), and manner of abduction (if known). I have a similar post in the Angela Hammond thread because many of these incidences seem to be in proximity of Springfield, MO and fellow sleuth MissouriMule had some good theories in that thread.
MO - MO - Angela Hammond, 20, Clinton, 4 April 1991

This list doesn't include:

*Missing female children even though there are a few abducted not far from these, I agree with Laughing, it appears to be a totally different M.O.

*Women that went missing in the 2000's.

*Women who went missing or were murdered from the Kansas City area as the Missouri River killer was operating at the time- although the victims were mainly prostitutes that were presumably not abducted and don't fit the victimology.. (Many suspects including George Breeden, Terry Blair, and unknown).
***see last comment

*Also, I didn't mention the possibility of the I-70 killer's involvement in any of these cases as his trolling grounds were so broad- even though he's not ruled out as a possible suspect by any means.

***On a side note, I-70 highway runs straight through K.C. and St. Louis but for whatever reason it seems the I-70 killer was not attributed to any of those cases as far as I know. Many of the missing and murdered in K.C. and St. Louis at the time were affiliated with street life and prostitution.
A Serial Killer Murdered 3 Women in 1990 in St. Louis. He’s Never Been Caught

06/17/1985 - Jackie Johns from Nixa, MO about 15 miles from Springfield was last seen in a convenience store parking lot and her body was found in Lake Springfield. (Death attributed to Gerald Carnahan).

03/11/1987 - Diana Braungardt abducted from a parking lot in Festus, MO 200 miles (3 hours) from Springfield and never found. (No suspects)

08/02/1987 - Debbie L. Hall went missing from Carthage, MO, about 60 miles from Springfield. No info on her case.

01/19/1991 - Trudy Darby was abducted from a convenience store in Mack's Creek and murdered 60 miles from Springfield. (Jessie Rush and Marvin Chaney)

02/27/1991 - Cheryl Ann Kenney abducted from a convenience store in Nevada, MO 95 miles from Springfield and never found. (Jessie Rush and Marvin Chaney - suspects).

04/04/1991 - Angela Hammond was abducted from a parking lot and never found. (Jessie Rush and Marvin Chaney - suspects).

06/07/1992 - The Springfield three disappeared from a house and never found. (Robert Craig Cox - suspect)

08/23/1992 - Tammy Jo Zywicki's car broke down on 1-80 near LaSalle, IL and on September 1, 1992, was found murdered along I-44 between Springfield and Joplin, Missouri. It was reported that a tractor/trailer was seen near her vehicle during this time period. (Clark Perry Baldwin was a suspect but as of a recent update, now he is considered not).
Tammy Zywicki Case: Accused Serial Killer Investigated in 1992 Slaying

Incidentally, Clark Perry Baldwin was an ex-Springfield, MO truck driver who was affiliated with similar murders out of state including:

Rhonda Knutson, 22, a truck stop convenience store clerk in northern Iowa who was bludgeoned to death during an overnight shift in 1992. Baldwin lived in nearby Nashua, Iowa.
Ex-Springfield, Mo. trucker charged in serial killings faces scrutiny across US

Although these cases are similar, there are so many possible suspects. Were any others tractor-trailer drivers?

Without more info they could all be connected, we just don't know .

Remember Serial murder is a extremely rare phenomenon, however a really eyeopening fact is that of all the deviant violent offender types , those who abduct and murder children for sexual purposes, have the highest propensity to become serial offenders.

And that doesn't mean children will always be their selected victims either, there have been quite a few killers who killed children then moved up to adults (For Ex. Arthur Shawcross)

Likewise a Serial killer who prefers adult victims, may change to lesser threatening victims such as children due to certain situational factors that limit victim availability (For Ex. Ted Bundy)

10/09/1984 - Clara Marie Grunst was last believed to be hitchhiking from Joplin, Missouri to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was last seen in the vicinity of Interstate 44 and Highway 43 in Joplin, when she got into a truck driven by a man from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Clara Marie Grunst – The Charley Project
Side note. Joplin is 70 miles from Springfield, just to add it to the other disappearances in the region.

An article posted on her page here stated that her mother reported her missing from the Rogersville, MO area (20 miles from Springfield).
MO - MO - Clara Grunst, 21, Joplin, 9 Oct 1984

Although one report stated she went with a truck driver from Milwaukee, it does resemble these other disappearances:

08/23/1992 - Tammy Jo Zywicki's car broke down on 1-80 near LaSalle, IL and on September 1, 1992, was found murdered along I-44 between Springfield and Joplin, Missouri. It was reported that a tractor/trailer was seen near her vehicle during this time period. (Clark Perry Baldwin was a suspect but as of a recent update, now he is considered not).

Incidentally, Clark Perry Baldwin was an ex-Springfield, MO truck driver who was affiliated with similar murders out of state including:

09/07/1982 - Rhonda Knutson, 22, a truck stop convenience store clerk in northern Iowa who was bludgeoned to death during an overnight shift in 1992. Baldwin lived in nearby Nashua, Iowa.

There were a lot of truck drivers and interstate killers active during this time. Perhaps she tried to hitch a ride back home and came into foul play?

It is possible
It is possible that some of these are connected. I looked at many of these cases recently. It seems that many of them came up missing from near freeways. Some are also within a very short time frame of each other.

Adding MO - MO - Judy Tolane Wardrip, 29, Bethany, 10 Dec 1984

Although her disappearance was years earlier, it also sounds like a possible freeway abduction, and very similar to many other MP cases throughout the years.

This is a compilation of some of the MP cases previously mentioned in this thread in addition to some others. This consists of similar MP cases in the 20 year span of 1980-1999 only. It does not include victims that were found murdered, despite the fact that some of these cases are similar or related to murder cases. Many have already been mentioned in this thread.

Also, a few select cases were not included because the suspects were boyfriends/husbands, although some of these might also be similar in nature.
The main focus is to connect these cases to possible serial killers - interstate killers, Missouri River killer etc. if applicable.

More information can be found in their designated threads.

Does anyone know if there have been major updates on any of these cases?
Angela Hammond got one in April 2021 according to Clinton Police they think hers was a case of mistaken Identity. From the Clinton Police Department Facebook page

NEW PUBLIC DETAILS ON 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ANGELA HAMMOND ABDUCTION

April 4 marks the 30th anniversary of the disappearance of Angela Hammond. Known as “Angie” to her family and friends, she was a recent graduate of Montrose High School and was well known and popular in the small community of Clinton, MO. Angie was abducted from a pay telephone booth at the corner of Second and Jefferson Streets. There has been no sign of her since.

On this anniversary, we reiterate that Angela Hammond’s family is still in our prayers. We refuse to classify this case as “cold” because we continue to search for investigative leads daily. A day barely escapes us without work or discussion on the case being held.

Early in the investigation, a description of a suspect vehicle was developed based on the recollections of the person Angie was talking with on the phone at the time of being abducted. That was a 1970’s model Ford pickup truck with a fishing scene in the rear glass. Much of the early parts of the investigation centered around that vehicle description. Hundreds of leads involving vehicles matching that description were followed up on, but never produced any significant evidence.

As the investigation progressed over the years, investigators decided to expand investigative possibilities that did not necessarily include the specific vehicle description. This opened new theories and produced legs of the investigation that had yet to be thoroughly explored. As each of these leads were investigated, many were satisfactorily eliminated for one reason or another. A lead is never dismissed in whole or in part until there is enough contrary evidence. There are still several active and open leads being considered.

One of those leads originates from the Lake of the Ozarks region. A confidential informant played a crucial role in disrupting a significant illegal narcotics operation by testifying in a court proceeding. When the informant’s identity was disclosed during the case, he received a cryptic letter composed of cut and paste characters in the style of a ransom letter one might see in a movie about a kidnapping. The letter addresses the informant by the number that had been assigned to him to protect his identity before the court proceeding. It also mentions the informant’s estranged wife by first name. The letter was postmarked April 4, 1991, the exact date that Angela Hammond was abducted late that evening. The informant’s wife and his daughter- also named Angela- were living in Clinton, MO at that time.

After speaking with several people of interest and potential witnesses, the theory developed by investigators is that, in retribution for the informant providing information that led to the prosecution and disruption of this criminal enterprise, a person or persons involved in the criminal enterprise planned and executed the kidnapping of the informant’s daughter. Some mistake was made as to the identity of the targeted “Angie”, who had some physical resemblance to Angela Hammond, resulting in Hammond’s abduction.

While the theory seems incredible, investigators have come across information that lends credibility to it and have so far been unable to refute it. This information is being publicly provided, in part, now with a plea. If you have heard a story like this one, or you have any information that could be related to this leg of the investigation, please get in contact with Clinton Police Investigators. A photo of a copy of the letter has been added to this post with the wife’s name and the confidential informant number redacted to protect the privacy of that family.

Very recently, a person left an anonymous telephone message for us regarding the Angela Hammond case. That person specifically mentioned two names. You did not provide a means for us to recontact you. If that person is reading this message, please re-contact us so that we can speak with you in real time. We will protect your identity or assure your anonymity.
