I agree, as a woman I may not have physically approached for my own safety (after all, it looks like someone’s shooting out there!). But I certainly would have at least called police.
I’m looking forward to all the 911 calls and Lester’s security cam footage being released.
Bbm.
Exactly.
I thought I'd read that L's cameras were non-operational, though ?
I'll go back and look for this.
I hope not !
It's important to clear RY and also for charges against AL.

Years ago, as a favor to her sister --- my friend went to pick up her 7 year old niece from her sisters' babysitter.
The sitter said to poke her head in and call out, if her niece wasn't right there inside the door at the pickup time.
So my friend did have to call out her nieces' name and: "I'm here !" ; and to do that she opened the screen door and stuck her head in .
My point to all of this is that she put her hand on the door handle.

Maybe RY did this as well ?
Someone watching your siblings would be expecting you, and they wouldn't mind if you rang the bell and gave a brief shout out after a bit ?
Iirc, he did not open the door and since he's recovering (thank god) he can say what he did, or didn't do !
This entire tragedy is pretty clear as to whom was at fault; imo.

The father of a 16-year-old Kansas City student who was shot Thursday in the Northland said his son, Ralph Yarl, is home from the hospital. Paul Yarl on Monday morning told The Star that Ralph, a junior at Staley High School, was released from the hospital on Sunday. He is now back home with his mother, a nurse, who is taking off time from work to care for her son, Yarl said. “He continues to improve. He’s responsive and he’s making good progress,” Yarl said

I'm so glad he's making a good recovery x

In my community, there have been issues with homeless refugees attempting to get in occupied cars. My wife has experienced this. There are also reports of young men knocking on doors and trying to force their way into homes late at night (although this may be more rumor than fact). The people in this neighborhood may have legitimate concerns for their safety.

This, however, does not justify immediately shooting people.

For sure. And if he was legitimately scared he could have just not opened the door and called the police.

Lester admitted that he shot Yarl through the door without warning because he was “scared to death” he was about to be robbed by the Black person standing at his door.

On Tuesday, Clay County Judge Louis Angles granted a request from Lester’s attorney to seal the court documents, saying the publicity led to threats against Lester, who his attorney says has been forced to move three times. He also said the publicity has made it more difficult for the case to be heard before a fair and impartial jury.

Why would Lester have to move three times? He seems pretty comfortable defending himself...

I cant be as generous to him, nor do I think the difference is purely a matter of age. In contrast, I strongly suspect that there was a racial aspect to his reaction.

Looking at myslef in the mirror...

Middle aged white guy, large, fairly athletic for his age, not shaved for three days. I am wearing blue jeans and an old T-shirt (black with a sports team logo).

Despite my non real estate agent / non banker mode of dress and shaving habits, I strongly suspect that had I knocked on that door, he would have presumed that I was a not a deadly threat- unless I clearly demonstrated otherwise.

In short, I doubt that I would have been shot twice through the glass door.
Another trigger happy old fool, just like Curtis Reeves. Because of their age, they often get away with it. That one really stuck in my craw.

Trigger happy?? What's he been shooting? It is complicated..at what age should driver licences and guns be taken away??....moo

From the link, RY didn't pull on the door handle, he just rang the doorbell.
Iirc, the shooter said he was trying to open the door ?
Even IF Ralph had opened the door-- not a crime, as he was expecting his siblings to come to the door and the adults inside (if it was the correct address) would've understood that.
I've opened a door before enough to stick my head in and call for a person, whereupon they said something like, "almost ready !", and "come on in".

Awful and inexcusable.

So glad Ralph is still with us !
Imo.

I never open someone's door, much less stick my head in to call out. I would ring the doorbell or knock, until I know if someone is home, It's possible that the man really was scared.... who knows? However he should not have shot through the door. That was very wrong.
Glad to hear the young man is improving,

Four months after he was shot in the head after ringing the doorbell at the wrong house to pick up his brothers, Ralph Yarl has begun his senior year in high school.

Next week, the man accused of shooting him will be in court.

Andrew Lester, 84, pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault and armed criminal action in the April 13 shooting. His preliminary hearing is Aug. 31.
