The defense is conceding the murder but doing a Hail Mary for state of mind, right? So are they hoping for a reduction from 1st degree to 2nd?

I've been wondering the same thing and could only come up with Collings trying to save one of them and he can't save himself. Kind of like I've seen when people get convicted of drugs and they try to take the hit all on their own to prove something. Loyalty?Me too. But I am concerned with regard to his confession. Why would Collings continue to insist he acted alone if that wasn't true? What could he possibly gain by protecting Spears?
