The man police believe was involved in the disappearance of a Joplin woman more than two years ago has died. Police are now asking the public for help.

Sandra Spoon was reported missing by her family in August of 2005. Since that time, her family has spent countless hours searching for her and continually come up empty handed.

However, new information brought to light by a Jefferson City-based group has given the family and the police hope in the solving the case and the police are now asking for the public’s assistance.
According to Det. Mike Hobson, Edward G. Monroe had been a suspect in the case but police were unable to gather enough evidence to take the investigation to the next level. On Friday, detectives discovered Monroe died in August of 2007 in Duncan, Okla.

Hobson said this information has caused the case to take a new direction and anyone who might have seen Monroe or Sandra Spoon within a few days of her disappearance are encouraged to come forward with the information. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the whereabouts of Sandra Spoon.

“When Missouri Missing contacted us about Sandra Spoon’s case, it gave us a reason to take a closer look,” Hobson said. “Although the case was never closed, we have been able to rejuvenate it and we are hopes of obtaining some new leads.”

This is an obituary for a Sandra Louise Spoon, who is the same age and also from Joplin. It could be purely coincidental, although it may be worth verifying whether or not this is in fact the same Sandra.

Details of Disappearance

Spoon was last seen at 10:00 p.m. on August 28, 2005 in Joplin, Missouri. She left the home she shared with her sister and rode with a coworker to visit an acquaintance's home on Pearl Street. Edward G. Monroe, who lived on the upstairs floor of the residence, reportedly made advances to Spoon during the visit and she rejected them.

At 10:00 p.m., he offered her a ride home in his brown four-door 1981 Oldsmobile Omega. As he left, Monroe told another person present that he was going to spend the night with Spoon. He returned unexpectedly two to four hours later, however. Spoon never arrived home and has never been heard from again.

When questioned about her disappearance by police, Monroe said he had dropped Spoon off at the corner of 22nd and Byers, approximately one block from her residence. He said that during the intervening hours they had simply driven around in the vicinity of Pearl Street. A witness saw him walking out of a wooded area to his car near Shoal Creek.

Photographs of Monroe and his car are posted with this case summary. Investigators consider him a suspect in Spoon's case, but he died in August 2007 without ever being charged in connection with her disappearance.

Spoon worked as a nurse's aide at the Meadows Care Center in Joplin in 2005. She was reported missing two days after she was last seen. Her disappearance remains unsolved.
