Shawn seems like a very together kid. Things could have turned out so differently. I think his adjustment is in large part thanks to his parents. I was very happy to hear that Shawn had caught up to his peers academically already. I hope he has a good, successful life ahead of him, and that his time with Devlin doesn't negatively affect him in the long run.

Question: Does anyone know what came of that mysterious picture of the blond kid? Many thought it might be an older Arlin Henderson.

My one furious point to those WOMEN WHO were the relatives of Shawn's friend while he was held captive. HOW DARE YOU FOR ONE MOMENT talk about how spoiled Shawn was by Devlin. HOW DARE YOU. and then to say how you "wonder" why he didn't come to you and tell you who he was? Their entire statement stunk to high heaven that they were so accusatory of Shawn. This was a child of 11 with a gun held to his head everyday, horrible sexual violent acts everyday and duct taped to a bed and you question that he was SPOILED by Devlin. I'm just thoroughly disgusted at the moment.

Beyond that piece, 48 hours was sensitive towards Shawn the remainder of the time. But that moment, no. Shawn is an amazing person, his family seems to be doing all the right things and I have no doubt he will achieve something amazing with his life whatever he is choosing to do.

Hi Concerned and Everyone,

What a MIRACLE it was, eh? I still remember the Breaking News bulletin and how everyone here was beyond themselves with joy. I think 48 Hours did an exceptional job on this show HEAR HEAR, and for me it was a real eye opener when the psychologist explained he had been living in terror, not just fear.

And I know the love in that family has pulled Shawn up. He is a really neat kid. All of his counseling has done well by him I think and I just wish for him and Ben wonderful, busy and happy lives ahead.

His parents never stopped looking for him - not for one day. I want to thank them for never giving up hope even after 4 years. oxox

That lady spoke like she had no compassion for what Shawn had been through... she seemed so bitter sounding. The poor kid had to endure 4.5 years of hell behind closed doors... surely she could have found SOME compassion for him.

Watching the show last night, I was in awe of how well spoken and mature Shawn is... it was great to see that he is no longer that scared looking kid, eyes darting around, that we saw on Oprah just after he was found.

It took a few days for the Tara Grinstead/Jennifer Kesse program to be up in its entirety but a link on the side will say full show or something like that. Can also save it for future viewing and this is especially helpful if you are working on a case and need to review. I think 48 Hours does a good job on their shows.

I thought that they were rewriting history a bit.
There was not even the mention of the two cops (Wagster and Nelson) that were instrumental in breaking the case?
At the time they were being interviewed everywhere (including Oprah and Larry King) and called heroes.
48 Hours made it seem as if the pizzeria owner tipped the F.B.I. and that was end of things.
Oh well, it’s not the first time that I haven’t been impressed with the way they have covered a case.
Here is a link to a Larry King transcript from the time:

I should have known someone would have linked this before me. Even though I already knew most of the information (I live in the area and it's still in the papers and the news every few months), seeing all presented with an interview with Shawn made it that much more emotional for me. But I can't get past the similarities between SH and Steven Stayner.

Thanks for that link for the full episode. It was really good to see how far Shawn has come. And to hear the reporter say that Shawn wasn't what he expected. I smiled with Shawn when he said that he gets that a lot. He went through hell, but he has come through the other side to make the best of what he has now. It was good to see Ben too.

Very emotional though. I can't even imagine what that family has gone through. And they will have those memories forever.

Just thought I'd bump this up and say Shawn and his family were going to be on Dr Phil this coming week.

Just a heads up:

Shawn Hornbeck is scheduled to be on 48 Hours Mystery on Tuesday night (the 16th), on CBS, at 10pm. I think he is going to talk about being kidnapped, as well as his time in captivity.

This is a nice interview mainly featuring Shawn Hornbeck's parents and some clips from his 48 Hrs interview. I found on it cbs5.com, a Bay Area station, posted in response to the Jaycee Dugard news and just wanted to share it on Shawn's thread.

Thanks for the heads up. Shawn is a very brave soul to share the horrific details and is to be commended. Only education can change laws for sex offenders and/or to bring more help to kidnap victims, especially children.

Shawn and Shasta Groene have shown the world that these beasts who commit atrocities have a formidable foe....goodness of children and those who love them.

Thank God Shawn was a survivor. He went to He!! and back and was simply a great kid.

Kudos to you Shawn. You have given inspiration to many, that they might be still alive and be found. Your parents never gave up hope. Your strength and endurance is a light for every person who is taken against their will. And to their families, to hold up strong and keep believing their loved one is still alive. They can never give up HOPE. xox

Shawn Hornbeck, parents launch safety campaign

Three years to the day since Shawn Hornbeck was found alive after being kidnapped and held captive, the former missing boy and his parents launched a campaign Tuesday to raise awareness about child safety.

In one of the videos released by The Shawn Hornbeck Foundation, the now 18-year-old Hornbeck warns in a voiceover: "If you see something, say something. Reach out to someone. There's always someone willing to help, and no matter where you are be aware of your surroundings."

The foundation says on its Web site that the spots will run on radio, television and the Internet.

St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - The Missouri Department of Corrections revealed Tuesday that convicted kidnapper Michael Devlin was attacked while in prison last month.

A source close to the Devlin case said he was stabbed with two homemade knives by another inmate, who named one knife "Ben" and the other "Shawn."

Shawn Hornbeck on growing up, moving on and offering hope

Shawn Hornbeck has a new tattoo on each of his forearms. One says “Respect.” The other, “Faith.”

“You need ’em both,” says Hornbeck.

Hornbeck, now 21 years old, knows he will always be known as the kidnapped boy from Richwoods, Mo., who was rescued in 2007 after four years in captivity. At times like these, he embraces it.

[snip]

On Wednesday, he took the day off from his 40-hour-a-week job at a metal fabricating company in Pevely. Beginning at sunrise, he spent the morning talking to reporters about the Cleveland case and the renewed hope of finding missing children.
