A Rankin County Circuit Court Judge heard pretrial motions on Tuesday less than a week before the September trial involving a teenage girl accused of murdering her mother and attempting to kill her stepfather at the family’s Brandon home in late March.

Defense attorneys for Carly Madison Gregg, 15, sought to exclude evidence stating a urine drug test given at Gregg's admission to the Rankin County Detention Center was "a search and therefore required a warrant."

Kevin Dale Camp, one of Gregg’s attorneys, said there must be three things to occur in order for the test to be valid — who the person performing the test must be known; the testing procedures must be laid out and presented to the court, and records must show the test is reliable.

Camp said the test “is not designed to be a stand-alone test.”

I don’t like the medication information I’m seeing. It makes me feel it caused her to act out by breaking down her ability to restrain herself. I can’t help feeling that the medication played a role and was a big factor in the commission of the crime. She is after all a child.
exactly.... but maybe allowing her access to a weapon during this time was a bad idea

Jury selection begins tomorrow.

From the article:

-- The court denied a motion to transfer CG’s case to Youth Court.

-- CG cannot plead insanity because of voluntary intoxication.

-- CG admitted she used marijuana just days before her mother was killed.

-- During a court appearance in August, CG declined a plea deal in which she would be sentenced to 40 years in the custody of the MI Department of Corrections (MDOC).

-- Now, case will go to trial, and CG faces up to life in prison.

-- A grand jury previously indicted CG on the counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder and tampering with evidence.

-- The shooting happened just after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19.

-- When deputies arrived at the location, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The man told deputies that he arrived home and found his wife, who was identified as 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. He claimed his 14-year-old step-daughter was armed with a pistol.

-- The sheriff stated the victim stated CG shot him in the shoulder. The victim was able to take the weapon away from CG, who then ran into the backyard and jumped over a fence.

-- Shortly, after 5:30, CG located and taken into custody.

-- During her initial court appearance, CG pled not guilty to the charges. Bond was set at $1 million.

-- CG is being held in an Adult Detention Center.

Jury selection begins today in MS v. #CarlyGregg. Gregg was 14-years-old (now 15) when prosecutors say she shot and killed her mom after her mom took some items out of Carly's room. She's then accused of luring her stepdad to the house from her mother's phone with the intent to kill him also, but he fought the gun out of her hand. She's charged with murder and attempted murder. We could see opening statements today.
