This helps establish that there was no "rush to judgement" as is frequently claimed by defense teams, and all leads were being checked out and lots of "Eric"s and "Derick"s were being looked for.

Ultimately it often comes down to data from a victim's cell phone helping to narrow the focus in time and place to one or more people in that person's orbit.

Cell phone calls, texts, pings. video from convenience store, witness statements/witness' increasing lies and changing of stories. When all is taken together a picture gets painted that becomes ever more in focus. This is why circumstantial cases are so powerful. All these seemingly unrelated pieces of information are actually related.
