Boat found on Miss. River believed to belong to missing man, teenager

The pair have been identified as 21-year-old Zeb Hughes and 16-year-old Gunner Palmer.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said the two went duck hunting near Palmira Island on Thursday afternoon.

They were reported missing after not returning and answering their phones.

Sheriff Pace said their truck and boat trailer were found that same evening at the boat landing.

Search continues on for teen, man on Mississippi River

The two went missing after launching their boat from the Letourneau landing boat dock. Authorities received a call at about 8:30 p.m., said MDWFP Col. Steve Adcock.

In their search, officials located the capsized aluminum boat the two were in. Hughes' truck and boat trailer are still at the launch, according to the Facebook post of a family friend.

Adcock said conditions on the river were normal on Thursday, but added the river can be unpredictable due to its strong current, swift water and wind. Temperatures were chilly Thursday with a low of 46 degrees in Vicksburg. The temperature was 45 degrees Friday morning.

The Mississippi is so big. I can't imagine just a canoe amid all that water. I remember driving up a steep hill in Vicksburg only to have the River suddenly appear below. I felt lightheaded. Or maybe agoraphobic. Yikes!

Yes the MS River is def one to be respected.
I believe it stated they were in an aluminum boat.

An aluminum boat. Still gives me the willie's. I looked at the map and couldn't quite figure out where the boat was found. Did they cross the river to get to the island?

I’ll keep looking to see if it’s been shared on which side of the river the boat was found. Not sure if they made it to the other side where Davis Island is located.

It helps to see visually where the pair went. It looks like they crossed a wide portion of the river to get across to Davis (Palmyra?) Island. Then it appeared they took one of the tributaries off the river to get to Davis?

Pretty sure it was found on this side of the river, in Vicksburg jurisdiction.

The facebook posts I have seen from family and friends ( I have several friends in common) have stated that the belongings were found on the banks, not in the water. I have seen one account that made it sound like the items had washed up in different spots, but I have not seen that said in enough detail to really know for sure.

It did seem that there was an awful lot of effort being put into a ground search around the area with drones, dogs and horseback searchers that made me think that had reason to hope they had made it out of the water.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said Sunday teams were focusing the effort to find 16-year-old Gunner Palmer and 21-year-old Zeb Hughes on a three or four-mile long stretch of the river.
The article states that safety vests and hunting gear was found in the boat.

By safety vests does that mean vests that are worn while hunting? Would they have worn life vests while in the boat? Are those missing or did they not take them? If not, I'm not holding out alot of hope.

After five days of searching, the families of two duck hunters who went missing on the Mississippi River are holding out hope, and the dozens of people conducting the searches are desperate to give them answers.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said Monday afternoon, the search for Zeb Hughes, 21, from Wesson, and 16-year-old Gunner Palmer continues on the water and on the ground.

“We are still looking. The Warren County Sheriff’s Office has multiple boats on the water, along with boats from the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks,” Pace said. “We are searching the surface of the water as well as underneath using sonar capabilities.”

The search has centered over a roughly six-mile area of the river, from just below the 420-mile marker to just about the 425-mile marker.

In addition to the water search, nearly 30 people conducted a ground search Monday. The group included members of the families and volunteers. Pace said the group was taken under escort into the area and suspended their search at about 2 p.m.

Pace said the days of searching have led to the discovery of the pair’s boat and personal items. The boat, Pace said, was found upside-down along the riverbank near the Warren/Claiborne county line near Middle Ground Island. It has been impounded by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
