''DEVELOPING:
BOZEMAN — Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer says the man who killed 15-year-old Danielle Houchins has been identified.
At a press conference Thursday morning, Springer said that Paul Nathaniel Hutchinson, 55, of Dillon was identified using forensic DNA genome sequencing.''

''Last month, DNA evidence collected at the time of Houchins’ death was matched to Hutchinson. The day after Gallatin County law enforcement had their first interview with Hutchinson, he died by suicide.

Investigators have determined that Hutchinson and Houchins had no prior connection. Describing it as a crime of opportunity, they believe Hutchinson and Houchins randomly encountered each other at the river, where Hutchinson raped then suffocated her in shallow water.''

According to Springer, Hutchinson died by suicide on July 24, 10 hours after Gallatin County investigators approached him outside his office in Beaverhead County to interview him about Houchins’ death. Days later, DNA collected from Hutchinson after his death matched DNA evidence collected from Houchins’ body, providing what Springer described as “100% confirmation” that Hutchinson was the killer.

''Hutchinson, who authorities say was previously unknown to law enforcement, was a longtime fisheries biologist for the Bureau of Land Management based in the agency’s Dillon Field Office. An avid outdoorsman and family man with a 22-year marriage and two adult children, Hutchinson had been living beneath law enforcement’s rada
r about 100 miles southwest of the crime scene until new forensic DNA technology and a Virginia-based genetic genealogist connected him to Houchins.''

Murder at Cameron Bridge: Who Killed Danielle Houchins?

NH? New Hampshire? I could not find anything linking him to New Hampshire.
Maybe whatever i initially posted about NH was totally incorrect info from the wrong obit, or some details were changed later? Apologies for the confusion! speculation, imo.
'On Friday, Hutchinson’s obituary was replaced with a message from his wife that read in full:'

I see what happened... The family replaced the original obituary text, which included his roots in New Hampshire.

BTK took a break during his serial murders.

It's possible that this murderer took a break after the one murder in 1996. Did meeting his online wife in 2000 end his violence against women? 1996-2001? What was he doing? Four missing years between sexually assaulting and drowning a child in shallow water, and meeting his wife. Who is he? He committed suicide.

I can believe that he stopped murdering after marrying and starting a family in 2001. I can believe that he felt something with Danielle Houchins when she died in 1996. Where was he from 1996 - 2001?

1969 - born (??)
1987 - graduated High School
1988 - construction job with family
1989 - Marines, honorable discharge; four years, corporal
1993 - Keene State College, one year
1994 - Montana State University in Bozeman, MT
1996 - Montana State University student randomly encountered Houchins before raping her and suffocating her in shallow water
1998 - Bachelors of Science, Fisheries Biology (?? - year graduated)
1999 - Internships in Glacier National Park and Sisters, Oregon (?? - dates)
2000 - met wife through online dating site
2001 - married online wife, Wilton, New Hampshire
2002-2024 - husband, father, Fisheries Biologist, Dillon, MT office
July 24, 2024 - Paul Nathaniel Hutchinson, suspect, died by suicide
August 2024 - Hutchinson implicated in murder of 15 year old female sexual assault victim in 1996

If that timeline is correct, he murder Danielle when she was 15 years old, and he was 27 years old.

It is hard to believe that Danielle was his first victim. Age 27. He married at age 32. He killed a teenager that he met at a remote lake. He sexually assaulted her and drowned her in the shallow water.

If she was his first victim, why did he stop? It seems like he stopped around 2000-2001. DNA was a budding 15 year old industry that was going mainstream. It was easier to get caught.

Where was he between 1987 and 1996.
Where was he between 1996 and 2001.
Where has be been recently.

Glad for Danielle ‘Danni' Houchins' loved ones to finally get some answers. moo

On July 23, law enforcement interviewed Hutchinson for two hours, where he “displayed extreme nervousness.”

He sweated profusely, scratched his face, and chewed on his hand. When he was shown a photo of Houchins, he “slumped in his chair and exhibited signs of being uncomfortable,” the release said.

Around 4:15 a.m. the following morning, Hutchinson called the Beaverhead County Sheriff’s Office said he needed assistance then hung up.

Deputies found him shortly after on the side of the road, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff's office said.

MTN News sat down with Stephanie Houchins, Danielle's sister, to hear about what led to the identification of 55-year-old Paul Hutchinson of Dillon as Danielle's killer.

'NBC Montana spoke exclusively with the genetic genealogist, CeCe Moore.
Moore helped solve over 300 cold case murders in her career through investigative genetic genealogy.

Most recently, Moore helped crack the murder of Danielle Houchins, 15, out of Belgrade.
You may recognize Moore from the hit television show The Genetic Detective, as well as crime shows such as 48 Hours.'

Moore told NBC Montana how they identified Hutchinson after nearly three decades.

“Paul Hutchinson, as it turns out, left his hair behind on Dani’s body, and that is what enabled us to be able to identify him. There was more than just that rootless hair but that is what ended up providing the DNA that we needed to identify Paul Hutchinson'.

So, he was able to live with himself (college, marriage, children) for all those years, after r*png and killing a young girl, until it looked like he'd been caught. Then life became unbearable. Poor him.

Another lily livered piece of crap.

A partial DNA profile from a hair found on Houchins’ body was submitted to CODIS — the nationwide law enforcement DNA database — but no matches were found, the sheriff’s office said Thursday.

The DNA was then sent to Parabon NanoLabs to try to solve the crime through genetic genealogy, according to authorities and Parabon

On Thursday, Aug. 8, 2024, the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office held a press conference to announce the cold case of Danielle Houchins, the 15-year-old girl who was raped and murdered at Cameron Bridge nearly 28 years ago, was solved and her killer identified.

Seriously. I really would like to know what kind of husband and father he was. Seems like the murderer for lot of these long standing cases solved with DNA is someone just like this. Not on LEs radar, married, kids, with no further convictions. I just really wonder if there are a lot of one and done murderers out there who never did it again for whatever reason. The thought that there is some vast number of “normal” husbands and fathers out there who raped and murderered like it was a trip to the grocery store is more terrifying to me than a serial killer.
