Billings police searching for missing man who is legally blind

BILLINGS, Mont. - Tuesday evening, police shared a missing person's advisory for 57-year-old Ronald Snell who they say is legally blind.

Snell is 57 years old and legally blind.

Snell is 5'10, 275 lbs, with black and gray hair and brown eyes and a light brown beard. Becker also says that Snell usually wears dark sunglasses.

Snell was last seen in the downtown area Saturday evening with plans to fly back to Hays, MT, but he hasn't been heard from since that time.

the idea of Mr. Snell being alone in such a predicament pains me.

Legally blind is not always what many people think of as blind. The missing man may have some degree of vision and may be able to read large signs and navigate walking. My 40 year old husband is legally blind from a genetic disease that's causing him to lose his vision (in a nutshell, it's a rare collagen disorder, and the retinas just shred over time, then detach, one is toast the other barely hanging in there) but he does engineering design work with special glasses and a microscope and can get around our village with no issues at all. He does always wear sunglasses as he's sensitive to glare, more so than most people.

I'm hoping Mr. Snell has enough visual acuity left to help him travel safely and is just not in contact with loved ones. Sharing with my family in Montana (my stepmom is from Billings).

He has been contacted by law enforcement and is safe.

Good grief. The man is an adult. Being blind does not equate with any sort of mental defect or psychological disability.

He should have been treated the same as any other adult who goes missing. No sign of foul play, leave him alone.
