That's what I came here to say. From what i’ve heard, Asha’s disappearance is the only criminal case in the Shelby area that the FBI is actively involved in. That’s why literally every local person is saying it’s gotta be Asha Degree related
Welcome to Ws @Jenna_ACO, thank you for the excellent summary!Given the recent developments, I thought I’d summarize the case and all known and unknown information.
Asha Degree’s Disappearance: A Detailed Breakdown
1. Asha’s Life, Personality, and Daily Routine
- Asha Jaquilla Degree was born on August 5, 1990, in Shelby, North Carolina, to Harold and Iquilla Degree. She lived with her parents and younger brother, O’Bryant, on Oakcrest Street, a relatively quiet, residential street in Shelby. Shelby is a small town located about 45 miles west of Charlotte.
- Personality and Behavior:
- Asha was described as an exceptionally quiet and obedient child. She was reserved but had a close relationship with her family, especially her younger brother. She was known to be a rule follower and a homebody who was somewhat timid, preferring to spend time with her family rather than venturing out or interacting with strangers.
- She excelled at school and was not known to have any behavioral issues. This was emphasized repeatedly by family and teachers—there was no history of running away or showing any desire to leave her home.
- Daily Routine and Interests:
- Asha loved school and sports, especially basketball. She played on her elementary school’s basketball team, and her love for the game was one of her few known passions outside her family and schoolwork.
- The family attended Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church regularly, where Asha participated in youth activities and was an active member of the congregation.
- Technology and Influences:
- The Degree household did not have internet access or cell phones at the time. They also didn’t have a computer, so Asha wasn’t exposed to online influences or social media. The absence of digital influences meant that her family and investigators had no leads pointing to online grooming or chats that could explain her departure(All That's Interesting)(Charley Project).
- Emotional State Prior to Disappearance:
- The day before her disappearance, Asha’s basketball team suffered its first loss. Although she was upset at first, her parents reported that she seemed to calm down by the time they returned home. They did not believe this minor setback would trigger anything unusual, let alone her disappearance. However, some investigators speculated that the emotional impact of the loss could have contributed to Asha’s decision to leave home, though this theory remains unsubstantiated.
2. Timeline of the Disappearance (Expanded Timeline)
February 13, 2000 – Day Before the Disappearance:
- Afternoon:
- Asha’s basketball team played a game, suffering their first loss of the season. She was very emotional about it, crying after the game. Her coach, family, and teammates noted her distress, but nothing in her behavior indicated anything beyond temporary sadness. The family went to church later that evening, as part of their usual Sunday routine.
- Evening:
- Asha completed her homework and went to bed around 8:00 p.m., sharing a room with her younger brother, O’Bryant. Her parents, Harold and Iquilla, checked on her before going to bed themselves. There were no signs of any abnormal behavior, and Asha was in her usual quiet mood.
February 14, 2000 – Early Morning:
- 2:30 a.m. Check-In:
- Harold Degree woke up around 2:30 a.m. to check on his children. He reported seeing Asha asleep in her bed, alongside her brother. The night was stormy, with heavy rain and strong winds, making it even more unusual for a young child to leave her house under these conditions.
- Time of Departure:
- Sometime between 2:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., Asha left her home. She packed her backpack with personal items, including her favorite clothes, and took it with her. No one in the household heard her leave, and she locked the door behind her—suggesting she left voluntarily. The stormy weather outside made it all the more perplexing that she would venture out in the middle of the night.
- 3:30-4:15 a.m. – Eyewitness Sightings:
- Two independent truck drivers reported seeing a girl matching Asha’s description walking along Highway 18, about a mile north of her home.
- Truck Driver #1 – Jeff Ruppe: He saw her walking along the roadside. She was wearing a long-sleeve white shirt, white pants, and white sneakers. This sighting occurred between 3:30 and 4:15 a.m. He thought it was strange for a child to be walking alone, but he assumed it might have been an emergency or a domestic issue.
- Truck Driver #2 – Unnamed Driver: The second truck driver also saw Asha on the highway. When he attempted to approach her, she ran into the woods near Turner’s Upholstery, a local business near the highway. Both drivers reported their sightings later, after learning of Asha’s disappearance. The combination of their reports strongly suggests that Asha was alone on foot, not yet abducted by anyone at this time.
- Green Car Sighting:
- During the same time frame when the truck drivers saw Asha, a green 1970s Lincoln Mark IV or Ford Thunderbird was seen near where Asha was walking on Highway 18. The car was described as having rust around its wheel wells, making it distinctive. This sighting, along with the truck drivers’ accounts, raised suspicions that the car might have been involved in Asha’s disappearance(Wikipedia)(Charley Project).
6:30 a.m. – Realization She Was Missing:
- Morning Routine:
- At 6:30 a.m., Asha’s mother, Iquilla Degree, went to wake her children for school and discovered Asha was not in her bed. Her brother, O’Bryant, was still asleep, unaware of his sister’s departure. Iquilla searched the house and discovered that Asha’s backpack, along with some of her personal items, was also missing. There were no signs of forced entry or struggle.
- Immediate Search:
- After the family searched the house and nearby areas, they contacted the police at around 6:40 a.m. The early response from authorities resulted in an immediate search of the surrounding areas, including nearby woods and roads.
3. Familiarity with Locations:
Turner’s Upholstery Shed:
- Location:
- Turner’s Upholstery is located about a mile from Asha’s home along Highway 18. The shed where some of Asha’s belongings were found was close to the road where the truck drivers saw her walking. Investigators found items in the shed, suggesting she had been there shortly after she left home.
- Familiarity:
- There’s no direct evidence indicating Asha was familiar with Turner’s Upholstery or the area around it. Given her family’s routine, Asha may have passed by this location while traveling with her parents, but there’s no indication she knew it well. It is assumed she may have sought shelter there due to the stormy conditions. The decision to run into the woods near Turner’s Upholstery suggests she may have been scared when approached by the truck driver.
Highway 18:
- Familiarity:
- Asha lived about a mile away from Highway 18, a road she likely traveled with her family. However, it’s unlikely she frequently walked along this highway alone, especially not at night or during bad weather. Highway 18 is a main road connecting different areas of Shelby, but Asha’s parents had never reported her walking this route by herself.
Burke County Construction Site (Backpack Discovery):
- Location:
- The Burke County site where Asha’s backpack was found is 26 miles away from where she was last seen. This rural area was unfamiliar to Asha and far from any locations she would have known or had access to on her own. The discovery of the backpack here suggests she didn’t travel to this site on her own and that someone else may have transported and buried it.
4. Detailed Evidence and Findings
Turner’s Upholstery Shed (February 17, 2000):
- Items Found Inside:
- Mickey Mouse Hair Bow: This was confirmed to belong to Asha, providing concrete proof that she had been in the shed. Investigators found the bow alongside other items.
- Candy Wrappers: These wrappers matched the type of candy given out during Asha’s basketball game the day before her disappearance.
- Green Marker and Pencil: Both of these items were believed to belong to Asha and further confirmed her presence in the shed.
- Footprints: Investigators also found footprints near the shed that matched Asha’s size. These prints indicated that she had been walking in the area and likely stopped at the shed for shelter. The lack of other prints or evidence of another individual suggests that Asha was alone at this time.
Backpack Discovery (August 3, 2001):
- Buried in Burke County: A year and a half after her disappearance, a contractor found Asha’s backpack while clearing land for a construction project near Highway 18 in Burke County, about 26 miles from her home. The backpack was carefully wrapped in plastic, suggesting deliberate concealment by someone.
- Contents of the Backpack:
- Clothes: Some of Asha’s clothes were found in the bag, indicating that she may have packed them before leaving her home.
- Dr. Seuss Book: This book, "McElligot’s Pool", had been checked out from Asha’s school, Fallston Elementary, but it didn’t belong to her. Investigators have not revealed whether the book’s borrower was questioned, but the presence of this book remains a mystery.
- New Kids on the Block T-Shirt: Asha did not own this T-shirt, and its presence has never been explained. It could suggest that she was with someone who gave her the shirt or that it was added to the backpack later.
5. Psychological Aspects and Possible Motivations
Psychological State:
- Stress from the Basketball Game:
- Some investigators have speculated that Asha’s emotional state following her team’s first loss may have played a role in her decision to leave home. However, this seems unlikely to be the sole trigger for such an extreme action.
- Possible Influence from "The Whipping Boy":
- In the weeks leading up to her disappearance, Asha’s class had been reading "The Whipping Boy," a story about two boys who run away from home. This has led to speculation that Asha might have been inspired by the story to leave her home voluntarily. However, no conclusive link between the book and her disappearance has been established.
Possible Coercion or Luring:
- Lured by Someone She Knew:
- Given Asha’s shy and obedient nature, many believe she may have been lured away by someone she trusted. There’s no indication of online communication, given the family’s lack of internet access, but it’s possible someone she encountered in her daily life influenced her decision to leave.
6. Potential Suspects, Leads, and Unsolved Mysteries
Roy Lee Dedmon and the Green Car (September 2024 Development):
- Description of the Green Car:
- Witnesses reported seeing a green 1970s Lincoln Mark IV or Ford Thunderbird near where Asha was last seen walking along Highway 18. In September 2024, the FBI seized a green car matching this description from the property of Roy Lee Dedmon in Cleveland County, NC.
- Roy Lee Dedmon’s Background:
- Dedmon had prior legal troubles, including animal cruelty charges in 2012, but no direct link between him and Asha has been established. Investigators are conducting forensic tests on the car to determine if it holds any evidence that could link it to Asha’s disappearance. The property from which the car was seized is relatively close to Asha’s home and the shed where her belongings were found.
- Significance of the Car:
- The green car has long been one of the central leads in the case. If forensic testing connects the car to Asha, it could provide critical information about who may have been involved in her disappearance. As of now, results of these tests have not been made public(Crime Online)(WCNC).
Unidentified Photograph of a Black Girl:
- Photograph Discovery:
- Investigators found a photograph of an unidentified Black girl among Asha’s belongings at Turner’s Upholstery Shed. The girl in the photo has never been identified, and it remains unclear whether this image is connected to Asha’s disappearance or if it was simply placed there by chance.
- Significance:
- The photograph has puzzled investigators and the public alike. If the girl can be identified, she may hold valuable information about the case. However, efforts to identify the girl have so far been unsuccessful, leaving this as one of the enduring mysteries(Wikipedia)(Websleuths).
7. Unanswered Questions and Mysteries:
Why Did Asha Leave?
- Asha’s decision to leave her home in the middle of a stormy night has never been fully explained. While some suggest emotional stress after her basketball team’s loss, others believe that she may have been lured or manipulated into leaving.
Who Buried the Backpack?
- The person who buried Asha’s backpack remains unidentified. The discovery of the backpack 26 miles away from Shelby raises questions about who could have transported it and whether they were involved in her abduction.
What Role Did the Green Car Play?
- The green car remains one of the most significant leads in the case. If forensic evidence can link the car to Asha, it may provide critical information about her disappearance.
Who is the Girl in the Photograph?
- The unknown girl in the photograph found among Asha’s belongings at Turner’s Upholstery has never been identified. Her potential connection to Asha or the case remains an unsolved mystery(Wikipedia)(Websleuths).
8. Investigative Efforts and Current Status:
FBI CARD Team Involvement:
- In 2017, the FBI’s Child Abduction Rapid Deployment (CARD) Team was deployed to review the case. They focused on reevaluating forensic evidence, revisiting key witnesses, and using modern technology to find new leads. Despite these efforts, no major breakthroughs have emerged(Federal Bureau of Investigation).
Forensic Testing Advances:
- Investigators continue to use advanced DNA and forensic techniques to analyze the evidence, including Asha’s backpack and the seized green car. These tests could provide a crucial breakthrough, especially with technological advances that weren’t available at the time of her disappearance.
9. Public Appeals and Community Involvement:
The public and investigators have continued to call for anyone with information to come forward. Despite the extensive efforts, no one has come forward with concrete evidence leading to a resolution. The reward for any information that helps resolve the case remains at $45,000.

If I remember correctly it was not storming the next morning. One of those strong ones that just moved through in the overnight hours.....Was it still storming/raining at 6:30am when her parents discovered she was gone?

It’s the only case in the county that FBI has been involved with.I'm a little nervous about the speed with which everyone is concluding this has to do with Asha - surely that's not the only thing that's ever happened in the area... I may well be wrong, and it would be wonderful to see movement on this case, but I worry that it will just add to confusion if it turns out to be about something else.
It is Hwy 150 and Hwy 180 - not route 160 and 180.On Saturday Feb 19th, Someone found small footprints in a snowy field near the intersection of route 160 and 180. This discovery was uncovered rougly half a mile from the property they are currently searching
