Investigators and family members of Beth-Ellen Vinson were expected to hold a news conference Thursday afternoon marking the anniversary of the 17-year-old's stabbing death.

Vinson left her apartment around 2:30 a.m. the morning of Aug. 16, 1994. Police found her white 1990 Mazda 626 in front of a car dealership on Capital Boulevard the same day. The driver's door was open. The motor was still running, and the radio was still on. Police found her shoe on the floor on the driver's side.

Seven days later, a factory manager found Vinson's body a half-mile from the car lot between two warehouses near Atlantic Avenue. She had been stabbed multiple times.

Beth Ellen Vinson was a vivacious “social butterfly” who grew up in Goldsboro, her uncle said. She was “the light” of the family, he said, one-time queen of the Wayne County Agricultural Fair who took tap dance classes as a child and dreamed of one day becoming a Broadway dancer.

In the summer of 1994, she moved to Raleigh.

Vinson took a job working for a national escort chain, said police spokesman Jim Sughrue. She had been in the city for only about six weeks when on Aug. 16, 1994, at 2:30 a.m., she finished drawing on her eyeliner, tossed back her brown hair, smoothed her skintight mini-dress and walked out the door of her apartment in the 2400 block of Avent Ferry Road for an escort service date: 45 minutes of exotic dancing for a stranger in a hotel room. Police think she was murdered before daybreak.

Details:
On August 23, 1994, approximately four weeks after Beth Ellen Vinson, a 17-year-old white female, left her home in Greensboro, North Carolina and went to Raleigh to work and save enough money to get to New York, her body was found. Ms. Vinson’s body had been covered with cardboard, and left between two warehouses on Wicker Road. Ms. Vinson who worked for an escort service was last seen at 2:30 a.m. on August 16, 1994, when she left her apartment to meet a client. At 5:30 a.m. her 1990 white four door Mazda 626 was found at the entrance of a car dealership on Capital Boulevard.

Continuing investigation of this homicide, determined that Ms. Vinson was in possession of four pieces of jewelry and a multi-colored cloth purse the morning of her homicide. These items have never been recovered.

Medical examination disclosed that Ms. Vinson had been stabbed in excess of 15 times.
