Ft. Bragg soldier still missing at Cape Lookout

This one is very local to me. Haven't seen it on here yet so wanted to add it.

Cape Lookout is an uninhabited barrier island that hosts one of our famous NC lighthouses. Simplest explanation is that he went into the water and drowned (the seas were pretty rough last week) but it is weird to me that his friends waited so long to report him missing.

Specialist Enrique Roman-Martinez

His hometown is Chino, California, and he arrived at Fort Bragg in March of 2017, according to the Army.

•Latino man
•21 yrs old
• 5'4, and 120 lbs
•black hair and brown eyes
•last seen wearing blue shorts and no t-shirt
•last seen Friday at his campsite at mile marker 46 on South Core Banks
•The next evening, friends reported him missing when he wasn't at his campsite all day

If you have seen Martinez, give the Carteret County Dispatch Office a call at 252-726-1911.

IMO his friends waited a long time before reported him missing. I don’t know what specific time he was last seen on Fri, but waiting until Sat evening to report him missing seems strange. But again, JMO.

Army to help in search for soldier missing since Saturday

Jeff West, superintendent of the seashore, said Specialist Roman-Martinez, stationed at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base near Jacksonville, left a group of eight people who had come to the seashore on a ferry without telling anyone where he was going or what he was doing.

This answers my question on what specific time he was last seen/exactly amount of time passed before being reported:

He was last seen after midnight Saturday morning, but his disappearance wasn’t reported to seashore authorities until 7 p.m. Saturday.

No one has reported seeing the California native since he left the group near Mile Marker 46, near the rock jetty near the south end of the cape.

“By the time we got the report, about 17 hours had passed and by then we couldn’t use a search dog, especially with all the wind we get over here.”

Cape Lookout shared a post on him missing on their fb page.
There are well over 200 comments!
His sister has commented & answered various que throughout.
She (VM) brings up some very note worthy questions herself!

Very interesting comments from the sister. If he really left everything behind but his shorts, that screams "went for a swim" to me, but in that case it is really bizarre that his friends didn't report it for so long. Something is not right there :/

Updated article
Enrique Roman-Martinez, 21, has been missing for more than five days now. And while Cape Lookout officials say they are doing everything they can to find him, his sister, Griselda Martinez, is searching for answers.
The family is flying to the east to assist in search efforts.
Griselda said, "The last time that I talked to him was May 18.”
From talking to friends camping with EM, officials determined he went missing from around midnight on May 22 but wasn’t reported missing until around 7 p.m. the next day.

Griselda said, "The eight that went with him are the only that last saw him. I want more answers."
Cape Lookout is still searching for more information too.
Horvat says getting lost for too long at Cape Lookout rarely happens.
"It's not a very common thing to be lost for too long. Usually, people can find their way back to either the Sound Side Beach or the Ocean Side Beach," said Horvat.
Officer Horvat also says they are now investigating the people who last saw Martinez.

Martinez says it's not her brother's character to just wander off alone. Plus, she says he was recovering from surgery.
She says her brother doesn't take unnecessary risks. She explains he's kind, timid, and never goes anywhere without his glasses—in response to hearing that he left his friends without his glasses, his shirt, or supplies.

Griselda said, "He doesn't have great eyesight. So, I don't imagine him ever leaving his glasses. I lived with him He was my brother. We grew up together. He always took his glasses everywhere—to throw out the trash, as soon as he gets up in the morning."

AN ADDITIONAL PHOTO

Despite a search on ground and water, there has still been no sighting of a Fort Bragg soldier missing since early Saturday morning from Cape Lookout National Seashore, authorities said Thursday afternoon.
Thursday afternoon, Mr. West said the search and investigation were still active, but he added the effort had already been very thorough.

“It’s a pretty small area, and you can only search it so many times,” he said. “We’re all hoping it will end well.”

Numerous comments. Mostly people offering up prayers & support. But there are other comments included with his bits of info that may be important.

Unless it was an absolute dire emergency, I would NEVER go swimming near a jetty!! Jetty’s are infamous for shark attacks.
I’m hoping that somehow/someway he will miraculously turn up safe!

PS: I do find it odd that it took so long for him to be reported missing. There is definitely something very strange about that.

I'll be the odd one out...... depending on the situation when he was last seen, I dont know that I would call it strange to wait til that evening to report him missing. Had he been drinking and hanging with friends, I could see them thinking he was sleeping off a hangover for most of the day, only to become worried later in the day when they realized he was truly missing. Jmho

There’s quite a few comments under the post. One includes a possible tip.
IMO, it could very well be an extremely important tip! Doesn’t the photo provided in all the links of EM look as if he is standing out the side of a vehicle??

Search continues for Fort Bragg solider missing at Cape Lookout National Seashore - OBX Today

Cape Lookout National Seashore officials want to talk to anyone who saw a white/silver Jeep Wrangler with two young men standing on the outside step rails while it drove at a high rate of speed south down the beach in connection with the May 22 disappearance of a soldier from Fort Bragg.

The Jeep would have been followed by a bright blue Ford Ranger pickup.

If you saw this pair of vehicles driving around, especially with the two young men hanging on the side of the Jeep, on Friday or Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, get in touch with park rangers at 252-725-4116.
