HAVE NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED
Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent Jeff West says the remains were found Sunday around 3:30 p.m. within the seashore off the coast of Down East Carteret County.

West did not say what they were or where, but a press release says the remains were found on Shackelford Banks.

At this point, park officials have not said if there is any connection between the remains and missing soldier Enrique Roman-Martinez.

In a release Sunday evening, Cape Lookout National Seashore officials confirmed human remains had been located on Shackleford Banks.

The NPS did not release further details.

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

Circumstances of DisappearanceOn 25 May 20, Army CID was notified that SPC Enrique Roman-Martinez, a 21-year-old single white male assigned to HHC, was reported missing by his fellow Soldier friends. Preliminary investigation by the U.S. Park Police located at the Cape Lookout National Seashore, NC, revealed on 22 May 20, SPC Roman-Martinez and six of his fellow Soldiers/unit members went on a camping trip to the island of Cape Lookout, NC, accessible only by a ferryboat. On the morning of 23 May 20, the Soldiers found that SPC Roman-Martinez was no longer at the campsite, and that he left behind his cell phone and wallet. They spent the day searching the island for him with no success. Last Seen wearing: Blue swim trunks, no shirt/no shoes

It sounds like he was found. But was he on land and not in the water? It's unclear to me. I did notice that he is a very small guy.

If he decided to go sit on the shoreline and someone was joyriding down the beach in a truck, he could have been run over.

That is very well possible, esp when a vehicle (Jeep) was mentioned by authorities and asked that anybody who may have seen it to contact LE.
This is merely my opinion & I mentioned it up thread, the photo shared with his missing info looks as if he is standing on the side of a vehicle (possibly a Jeep). I hope this is not the case but what if he fell off the side & got hurt somehow?
Just thinking aloud, IMO

And it’s possible he went for a swim & something happened. Hopefully there will be an update soon.

Search continues for Fort Bragg solider missing at Cape Lookout National Seashore - OBX Today

Cape Lookout National Seashore officials want to talk to anyone who saw a white/silver Jeep Wrangler with two young men standing on the outside step rails while it drove at a high rate of speed south down the beach in connection with the May 22 disappearance of a soldier from Fort Bragg.

The Jeep would have been followed by a bright blue Ford Ranger pickup.

If you saw this pair of vehicles driving around, especially with the two young men hanging on the side of the Jeep, on Friday or Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, get in touch with park rangers at 252-725-4116.

I think the answer to what happened lies in this fresh request. That earlier FB comment pointed out by @mlhenn is clearly what prompted the request. The witness must’ve presented to LE and his account seemed credible.

If the friends claim he was last seen the night before, but a witness places him joyriding (in an unsafe position) on a Jeep with mates the next morning, the question inevitably turns to whether an accident occurred and a coverup ensued - because no-one wanted to be charged for dangerous driving causing death in the event he slipped and went under the vehicle. The delay in reporting him missing adds to the likelihood. If that witness checks out and any of the friends own or had access to either of those vehicles being sought, they’re toast. All stating the obvious and MOO but it sure seems the most likely scenario at this point.

Search suspended for missing soldier who disappeared on Cape Lookout

The search has been suspended for a Fort Bragg soldier who disappeared at Cape Lookout National Seashore in May.

The National Park Service says the search for 21-year-old Specialist Enrique Roman-Martinez has been suspended.

Park Rangers found remains over the weekend that are in the processs of being identified by the medical examiner's office.

Officials say very few clues have been found during the search efforts and that teams ran up against rain, wind, and rough sea conditions.

Two investigations are underway on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, involving the whereabouts of a missing Fort Bragg soldier and the identity of a body found on a Shackleford Banks beach.

The National Park Service has not said if the two cases are related.

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command is also investigating, the park told McClatchy News on Tuesday.

Officials said last week that nothing indicated Roman-Martinez had gone swimming alone.

The waters off North Carolina’s Outer Banks are home to everything from great white sharks to venomous snakes. However, deadly rip currents that pull swimmers out to sea are among the greatest dangers.

If he was found on Shackleford Banks, then he must have floated there. It is a separate (though very close) island. I would be very interested to know whether he washed up on the sound or the ocean side. That could rule out rip currents.

My first initial thought was a shark attack. But the last time I mentioned anything about, on another post, that idea it did NOT go over so well. So I kept my Chatty Cathy Aspie, whose special interest is sharks & attacks mouth shut, this time.

As someone else mentioned, ShackleFord Banks is only accessible by boat, jet ski, kayak, etc...

Anyway, I hope nothing nefarious between him & his mates happened.

ETA: not just GW but also Bull sharks. They are notorious for attacks, especially fatal ones in NC! And of course there are many other species but none that are as aggressive as those two. IMO. MOO.
I guess we’ll see.
