certainly partly true, but that was a monumental crime for Chapel Hill at the time, and I think many, waking up to THAT news story, DO remember where they were the hours before, but proving it could indeed be difficult (MOST people were simply probably asleep during those morning hours, say 3am to 7am when the crime occurred).
As a thought experiment, who on this thread right now can remember what they were doing that night?
I was most definitely asleep, but what I was doing the rest of that night? I might have a vague idea, but it’s more a supposition based on what was going on in my life at the time than an actual memory.

yeah, I don't think the rest of the night is really that important, but only the time during which the crime was actually committed... also this is a question I would limit to the locals who were hugely impacted by this grisly crime -- there are a good number of locals on this thread, but I imagine the majority of participants are NOT local.

Funny, at this point, I think the vast majority are local and my very strong hunch is that at least one is connected to the defense (which IMO means that the defense is probably grasping at straws). MOO.

Yeah, my bad, right after I sent that it dawned on me that the few still left here probably are mostly locals… which reminds me of one my constant questions: why does the local press barely cover this story any longer, even on anniversary dates (the public may have a short attention-span, but the press shouldn’t!)… so many questions to keep asking CHPD and Durham DA office, even if they give unsatisfactory answers (or even moreso then!). Tom G., when he was around, seemed to be the only one doing much digging, and he was independent. Where are the investigative journalists? anyone here been in touch with any?

I have been in touch with a couple that I know, but they are spread so thin that they have not been able to focus on this particular story.

Journalism has been suffering mightily and is losing the battle. Few people are willing to pay for subscriptions to anything anymore, and newspaper advertising is all but dead. In our market, for print journalism, we basically have Gannett (which by the way, isn't even going to be carrying AP articles anymore!) and the Indy (and they are down to printing what? One issue a month? And they were acquired by The Assembly and are being asked to focus on long-form journalism, which means much less coverage of current/breaking news). Then there are a handful of local TV stations that are trying to cover multiple cities all at once.

Gannett is so desperate that they've started asking journalists to perform basic sales and marketing functions. Frankly, worse than not giving coverage to individual crimes, is the impact it's having on our democracy in that people can't even find information about basic local issues, like the public school budget snafu, without themselves doing investigative journalism (have you ever looked at the public records portal? Individuals are now filing open records requests about basic things that we should be able to read about in the newspaper). If you ask a question, you're directed to the city's public relations videos. There are all kinds of negative impacts to the lack of press coverage that go beyond people not knowing what's going on, because when there's a void, people with specific commercial or political interests will step in to fill it.

You used to be able to pick up a local paper and find out what's going on at city council meetings, school board meetings, city planning meetings, and even high school foot ball games -- long, detailed articles by people who worked a specific beat and had time to know the people, cultivate sources, and follow long enough to learn the ins and outs and to understand the debates and the context around them. Now, we get almost no coverage of city council, the school board (unless school is being disrupted by rolling sick-ins -- and even then, it's hard to figure out why it's happening without digging deep into primary sources) -- not because there are no great journalists, but because they are stretched so thin and forced to make do with so few resources.

Faith's murder has enough elements to make it into one of those widely-followed stories, but it usually starts with one journalist or team making it a pet project (like Gasparoli, whose reporting was not perfect IMO, but it served an important function) and beating the drum enough that national outlets start to take an interest. That's how the Murdaugh case went from a local news story to a national one -- but there is a huge element of randomness in which stories gain traction with media, and right now, we do not have a journalist champion for Faith.

There are 3 local-ish cases I’m disappointed about in terms of lack of resolution and reporting. Faith is one of them. The others are McKenzie Sessoms (12 year old murdered in Salemburg) and Madalina Cojocari, the 12 year old from Cornelius NC who disappeared in November 2022 whose parents didn’t report her missing.

Why no trials for Faith’s and McKenzie’s cases? And is anyone even doing anything about Madalina?

Geee, anybody got anything? Can you believe in 2 months it will be the 12th anniversary of this horrible, messy, evidence-strewn crime and seemingly botched/sloppy investigation. The silence is deafening! If law enforcement and Durham DA have no announcements to make in early Sept. we ought hound the local press to do their job, asking questions and shining a spotlight on them!

I sent something in to WRAL a year or so ago asking about coverage, and shortly after this appeared-

Coincidence? Maybe...at any rate the above link was just a rehashing of key points from previous coverage. Probably put together by an intern. No real investigative journalism done on this in quite some time

What is going on?
you tell us! ;)

from this news item i just googled

"
Police released no details about the arrest, suspect or what relationship he had, if any, to Hedgepeth. “Patience will be asked of you,” Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue said at a news conference. “This story will take time to completely unfold.” “This investigation is not complete. Our work is not done,” added Assistant Chief Celisa Lehew."

OK...their work is not done i guess? Is there a legal limit on holding someone with no trial date set? 1.5 years with nothing! I watched an episode on Netflix of some series Homicide: New York and there was a central park murder in 1997 involving 2 minors as perps. NY has a law saying you get 6 days from arrest to file an indictment (i hope i am getting this right). Is MESO even arraigned or indicted yet? I feel like he was arrested and charged and that was it. Sorry I am not well versed on legal steps

I agree; my memory is that he was arrested and charged, but never arraigned, and certainly not indicted, but incarcerated for 2 yrs. How is that even possible, legally (even on a serious crime)? Many involved early in the case with CHPD may no longer even be with the force, and am doubtful it will ever go to trial but have some sort of out-of-court settlement instead. So many of Faith’s closest loved ones have also passed on, without ever having resolution. Just shameful, as the 12th anniversary of this crime rapidly approaches. And sick of hearing how the case is complicated and requires patience (blah, blah, blah…).

So here we are, unbelievably, one day away from the 12-year anniversary of this brutal crime, and seemingly, shamefully, no news? Indeed, Websleuths has it filed appropriately as a "cold case," and perhaps CHPD just wishes it would fade from people's memories? Anyone know if there are at least any memorials or remembrances at all taking place on campus this weekend?

Did any local news affiliate cover this story on the anniversary?
I didn’t see any coverage (though I certainly could’ve missed something). Folks could try to contact some of the local news outlets and ask if they covered the story at all this week and if not why not??? (I mean a guy simply sits in jail for 3 yrs. and nobody says ANYthing!? What gives? news blackout, cover-up, incompetency...???)

One small thing I just noticed in an old article, this quote:
“It’s alleged that the defendant Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares did unlawfully, willfully and feloniously with malice and forethought kill and murder Faith Hedgepeth,” [DA] Deberry said [bold added].

I know this fits with many folks’ theories, but I was surprised by the word “forethought” since I’ve always felt this was a crime of impulse and sudden rage, and not likely premeditated or planned as this seems to imply. (...and the degree of premeditation makes a difference in exactly what level of murder MESO is charged with).

thanks for these. I reached out online to WRAL and The Daily Tarheel. If no satisfactory response I will go down the list!

Now am just curious: anybody know what the exact legal charge against MESO is? Is it 1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree murder; also just recently learned of “felony murder,” similar to 1st degree, where murder results during a violent crime despite no original intent or plan to commit murder (i.e. you plan only to rob someone, but in the chaos that ensues you shoot/kill the victim or a bank guard). If anyone can clarify feel free.

I was able to access MESO's court case information on the North Carolina eCourts portal. The case number is 21CR054671-310. Under the section "case events," it says that an indictment was issued on September 20, 2021.

I found a North Carolina Courts document via Google that further confirms this, as it lists his indictment from the Durham County Grand Jury for first degree murder.

There is an Administrative Hearing scheduled for 10/10/2024 at 10:00 AM.

(And just after I obtained this information from the portal, I'm having trouble accessing it again. There is an error when I go to search.)

Great, THANX for this, and an "Administrative Hearing" right around the corner on 10/10... anyone have a clue what that would be for? to discuss a trial date? to state a plea (I know MESO early claimed innocence, but not sure he's ever stated it in court?); conceivably to announce further indictments??? other possibilities?
There was also listed a previous "Administrative Hearing" as recent as 7/18/24, as well as some procedural hearings from June through August of this year (none ever mentioned in press so far as I know). Anyway, it's worth looking over the links faithx provided (I didn't have any problem accessing).

I reached out to the first 5 on your list and only heard back from Chapelboro.com:

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out and checking up on this. Candidly, the anniversary falling on a weekend this year affected some of our efforts to do some coverage around it. But the last two years we checked with the Durham DA's office, there were no updates in the case or the suspect's court proceedings. The office did not get back in touch with us this week when we reached out to follow up again.

I can't help but feel that this case is being intentionally suppressed? But why?
