In 2005, the local district attorney said there was more than enough evidence to charge Reagan with the slaying. There was just one problem: He was dead. Thirteen years at that point.

For their part, his family denied Reagan — who died in 1992 — was the killer. Because of his violent tendencies, that made him an easy target for cops.

"Boozehound". Now there's a 1960's term for ya!

That made me chuckle.

What a horrible fate to be burned alive; so evil.

That's why I'm wondering why screams weren't heard from neighbors. Unless she was gagged, I would imagine she would be making sounds of distress. Did they find any restraints at the site? I forget.

As an aside, when someone dies of burning, I believe smoke inhalation is usually the actual cause of death. I was listening to some of the 9/11 recordings of phone calls made by those trapped in the burning buildings on that day; many of those people were on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, only to fall unconscious while they were on the phone - snoring could be heard on the recordings after they'd been on the line for a couple of minutes, and presumably, they died sometime soon after becoming unconscious.

That's also a big reason why in fire safety drills, they tell you to crawl or crouch close to the floor if there's thick smoke present when you're exiting a burning building, because the heat / smoke rises, and if you're breathing that stuff in, you might not make it out. The fire itself isn't what does it most of the time. So, I take some comfort in knowing that her suffering probably wasn't prolonged, and that she would've likely fallen unconscious pretty quickly from breathing in that smoke, and hopefully died a mercilessly quick death after becoming unconscious.

I came across this. Just thought I would post since she had ties to NY. That is where a lot of the things in jane does bag were from.

Mid 1960’sStephanie Bennett – San Diego

Stephanie Agnes Bennett (May use last name Medina) was last seen in San Diego by her daughter in 1963 or 1964. Stephanie was born in New York in 1939.
I have not found any photo.

We were all wearing cat's-eye glasses like that in the 60's. The victim's glasses are especially large, however.

But the missing person does seem to have a strong resemblance to the victim. Is she in any of the missing person databases?

Haha.. ok I was not thinking of that!
No I have not seen her in doe network but have not checked elsewhere.

re-post.

CRIME HUNTER: Canadian Jane Doe slain in 1968 remains a mystery | Toronto Sun

Cops believe this Jane Doe was a Canadian woman murdered in 1968 in North Carolina.

''April 27, 1968 was one of those warm spring days in North Carolina. A fine day for a walk through the countryside in Wake County, south of Raleigh, in the western end of the state.

That was also the beginning of an enduring mystery that remains essentially unsolved to this day. The victim has never been identified but from the beginning, cops believed she had traveled down from Canada to meet a tobacco-picking paramour.

Which could mean she was from southwestern Ontario in the tobacco-growing regions of Tillsonburg, Delhi and Simcoe.

According to Jo Ann Hunter, it must have happened quickly. Her mother and sister were going to a church on the road to drop something off and they saw the woman. Fifteen minutes later on their return trip, she was gone.

“She (Hunter’s mother) says she kept remembering that she would look back,” Hunter told reporters in 2005. “When they came back, they didn’t see the woman. They saw a fire burning in the field.”

At the time, they thought it was a farmer burning rubbish. They were wrong. Woke County Jane Doe was found burned to death the next day.

“It was a horrendous crime,” Chief Ronnie Stewart, of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, said in 2005.

Robert Reagan was a local tobacco picker who had done the back-breaking work in Canada as well.

Detectives believed that the unknown woman had traveled from Canada to meet Reagan and then he killed her. At the time of the murder, he was brought in but never charged.

He was violent womanizer and boozehound, cops said.

Reagan confessed that he and a buddy had seen the woman walking but claimed he had nothing to do with it.

“That evidence tended to show with certainty that the victim was killed by Robert Reagan, a resident of the community at the time,” Stewart alleged to WRAL.com.

In 2005, the local district attorney said there was more than enough evidence to charge Reagan with the slaying. There was just one problem: He was dead. Thirteen years at that point.

For their part, his family denied Reagan — who died in 1992 — was the killer. Because of his violent tendencies, that made him an easy target for cops.''
“I would like the public to know that there are two sides to this story,” his daughter, Jewel Madsen, said. “We’ve been shown no evidence, no proof. If he was alive today, he would have a trial. All the evidence would be put forward for us to make a rational decision.”

Investigators believe the mystery woman died a day before she was found and was white with possibility some Native heritage. She was about 5-foot-3, weighed around 130 pounds, had black hair, small ears, and a surgical scar below the left side of her naval with an A positive blood type.

The woman’s dental, DNA and fingerprints are available. Her remains have since been misplaced.

“I believe someone’s missing this victim. They think she probably left on her own free will to start another life,” Scott Broadwell, of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, said in 2005.

Can you help solve this mystery? Is someone you love missing from long ago?

Have they ever said why they think she was from Canada?

I think it's just a theory that's been put out there. Unless I missed where isotopes were found with her in her body or possessions originating from Canada. The guy they think did it picked tobacco, and that may have been her line of work as well, and she's Canadian because... there's tobacco harvesting in Ontario. *Scratches head* It's all a bit... odd / farfetched.

I've often found those old theories about unsolved cases are red herrings... I just wonder if it hasn't been solved because LE spent a lot of energy looking for a missing Canadian woman who was actually from S. Carolina or something. On the other hand, "Canada" is so specific and sort of random seeming, that maybe they have some basis for that belief that just hasn't been released to the public. This is the kind of UID case that seems like it will be solved someday by a DNA match, but the match still may be years away.

Yeah, amen to that. I imagine you heard that the "mystery couple" found murdered in Sumter County, SC in the 70s were finally identified this year. They thought the young woman, Pam Buckley, was a foreign exchange student from the Middle East She was actually missing from Colorado and played in a small-time folk band. Talk about a red herring and a hilarious one at that.

I don't believe that "Canada" was just selected at random, there are likely reasons (not publicized) for this focus. I'm certain LE is willing to review possible matches from anywhere and I'm also fairly certain attempts are being made to use genetic genealogy in her case and remain hopeful they will bring answers.

Is there a clearer version of her black and white reconstruction? It's from a May 1968 newspaper but I don't know which one.

This may help narrow your time frame some, this article is from The Charlotte Observer, 13 May 68, pg 6. At the date of the article, the article indicates a picture was taken and is being distributed to the media. If I find a specific article with the photo, I will post it.

If you can find a clearer picture, I'd love to do a reconstruction.
