Monday, Jul. 07, 2014: Newton police request surveillance video in counselor homicide investigation
http://www.charlotteobserver.com/20...police-request-surveillance.html#.U7u2sJS_RDQ
After “several good days of work” on the investigation into the homicide of Newton high school counselor Maggie Daniels, police on Monday requested surveillance video from anyone in the area surrounding Daniels’ home.

Newton police asked for any businesses or homes from 15th Street to 20th Street on North Main Avenue that have exterior surveillance cameras to contact investigators. Police are looking for footage from June 27 and 28.

This afternoon police did release a photo of Daniels leaving the Walmart in Conover with a friend the day before a neighbor made the gruesome discovery.
Police are asking that anyone who may have seen Maggie at Walmart in the afternoon of June 27 to call the Newton Police Department

Why would LE want to talk to anyone who saw Maggie at Walmart when there is video of Maggie leaving Walmart with a friend the same day? Wouldn't they want to talk to anyone who saw Maggie after she left Walmart? Wonder what is up.

That is odd, as her friend would know if Maggie spoke to anyone in the store or if anyone was looking at Maggie strangely.

Maybe it is that friend that was at Walmart that is the real person of interest but they are approaching that person this way so they let their guard down.

Well, another wonderful young person is gone from us. And in my home state... What in the world happened to this special young woman?

A bit about Newton, NC -- and please forgive if this is "old news."

Newton is a small town of about 13,000 people. It is about 40 miles nw of Charlotte, NC, which has a population of about 775,000, and it is the largest city in NC.

People in small towns get very alert and often bond together when something such as this happens. That may prove to help solve this case. I hope that someone has already reported something they saw that day, and I hope that LE is simply holding their knowledge close to the vest and building probable cause for an arrest and an indictment, but nothing I have read indicates this to me, but I have hope. LE, as we know, usually doesn't release any significant evidence before they make an arrest. I hope they have already talked with a suspect and are watching him/her/them and gathering evidence.

This is another heart-breaker. Oh, and her family, the faculty, and the students. Horrible on all levels.

Two videos were shown, showcasing pictures of Maggie Daniels’ life. The first montage was created by her family, the second by the school system.

Both featured Maggie Daniels with friends, family and postings from her Facebook page.

“Not to spoil the ending for you … but everything’s going to be OK,” one post read.

Another, from July 2013, said “I hate when things come to an end without explanation.”

2 Scholarships were made in Maggie's name.

“It’s terrible. I don’t see how anyone could’ve done this, especially to her,” said Anna Sheets, church member.

“It’s a little unnerving but I figured there was something there between the two of them. Someone she must’ve known,” said John Guelzow, Daniels’ substitute teacher.

Many have their own theory about what happened to Daniels, but so far Newton police have revealed very little about their investigation into her death.

They won’t say how Daniels died and so far there are no suspects in her murder.

Workers at a repair shop said State Bureau of Investigation agents visited them three times.

They said they worked on Daniels car in the days leading up to her murder.

They said investigators questioned them about a man who wanted to pick up the vehicle the morning she was found dead.

"They wanted to know what it looked like inside,” said Adam Stone, mechanic. “What he looked like. His appearance -- his demeanor and whether he looked flustered. And they wanted to know if he used the phone. They wanted our phone records.”

IMO I think the Coach was referring to the life in her eyes pertaining to the death of her father. Cannot remember when he passed away but she was very depressed. My son went to NCHS. Didn't have Maggie as a teacher however knew her and said she was so sweet to everyone. But she was very sad / depressed about her Dad for a long time. I think she loved everyone and didn't mind telling others. I think the Coach genuinely loved her back. JMHO

Regarding the 911 call - I have been curious who was giving him info in the background... Didn't know the complex address, then sounded like someone else was providing the info...

Also, Addie Shuford stated Maggie was suppose to meet her at Geppetos. An Italian local restaurant. That would have been Friday evening. After no response to calls, texts, etc Addie went to check on her the next morning and found door unlocked and Maggie dead. So, how would the black male 911 caller know how long she had been 'laying on the floor'

Addie Shuford is an older black woman, her daughter was the one who opened the unlocked door. Maybe she has a son or it was a friend of the daughter with them. The caller sounded as if he was with them when they opened the door. He would have known that they were trying to reach Maggie who didn't show up the night before.

I hate that this story is so close to my home. I guess each and every case is near someone's home but another pretty teacher is murdered not too far from me. (Tara Grindstead when I lived back home, Bianca Turner last month and now Maggie Daniels near CLT) Obviously these cases are not connected but nonetheless too close for comfort if you will. I too always lock my doors like PP stated-I watch enough Dateline and read the forums here to know even Mayberry isn't safe in 2014. I am very curious who "Coach" is IRL. In my mind he is an older father like figure (possibly even old enough to be a grandpa) who is genuine in his feelings for her. There was one message that he sent her saying he was going to send in the troops (paraphrasing) if he didn't hear from her and another convo from a friend asking if she was alive. These are both previous conversations, not in relation to her death. I do that with my friends and family if I haven't heard from them in a reasonable response time normal for them (some longer than others) so I am curious how often she was “offline” from people in her life.

In reading her SM (are we allowed to discuss that here?) she seemed to go up and down with her emotions. I initially questioned if she committed suicide but I assume now that that the ME has released COD that it isn't. One news station mentions her boyfriend. What boyfriend? No trace of him on SM. Who was the friend with her at Wal-Mart and what did I read about her car being at a repair shop and a man trying to pick it up the morning she was found dead? I will find the link to that story b/c it looks like it hasn’t been shared here yet.

What happened to sweet Miss Maggie?

Agreed, clu -- maybe they think someone from Walmart followed her home?? Or, maybe there is "something" about someone who works there? Dunno. It is a tad odd.

Who would be close enough to her to pick up her car ay repair shop? That should not be so difficult to determine. And it if was the killer, that is a pretty bold and IMO stupid move.
