According to Ramell, Roger Self's mental wellbeing was the contributing factor in this incident. He had reportedly started reaching out to his wife and church leaders two months prior to the Sunday tragedy with concerns of his mental state.
The family's pastor said the church had pointed Roger Self toward psychiatrists and offered him help for his mental health. "What happened yesterday was not a testimony of Roger Self but a testimony of mental illness that absolutely overtook him a little over two months ago," the pastor said.
Ramell said Roger Self had been suffering from "severe depression and severe anxiety." "It was a roller coaster...the last few days it went from bad to really bad," the pastor said.
The pastor wanted to remind others how severe mental illness can be. "It is a mind no longer capable of processing life, truth or emotions with any measure of sanity whatsoever," he said. "Everything becomes twisted. His family and close friends had intensely labored to try and get Roger help."
When Roger Self realized he was struggling with depression, he reportedly called his son and asked family members to take away his guns, according to his pastor.
"At the end of the day, we were all unable to help our friend and the result was his mental state carried him to an act that the Roger Self who we all known would have without hesitation called absolutely insane and evil," the pastor said. "Roger deeply loved his family. He deeply loved the daughter he killed. He deeply loved the daughter-in-law he killed. Mental illness is real and yesterday we saw absolutely horrifying testimony of that reality."

and certain laws or lack of contributes , when the signs are there like the paranoia. he should not have had keys to a 4000lb vehicle when are we going to take mental health seriously ....I'm mean good lord they saw this coming...whats it going to take to get it...when a normal person acts weird for months DO SOMETHING! and back to the DO what? I don't know , obviously no one else does either because it keeps happening

Maybe at least have him committed for psych evaluation to determine if he could harm himself or someone else?

#MORE: Pastor says at one point, Roger Self asked that his firearms be taken away. And that's when close family members realized how serious the situation was. @wcnc

He had a Pastor, a law enforcement officer and a nurse know about his mental state of mind and his own fear that he was at risk. He had asked that his guns be taken away. It is very tragic that he was not committed for evaluation.

This report contradicts/corrects previous report:

A family member told WBTV that Roger Self allegedly made the reservation at the Surf and Turf Lodge the day before the incident occurred but the family's pastor said during a media briefing on Monday that was not case. According to Rammell, Katelyn Self had reportedly made the reservation "to have a good time with her dad."

The pastor hopes in the days to follow that the family can get clarity over the situation and what happened. "The man you're seeing a picture of is not the man any of us has ever known until a few months ago."
"We're going to love this family and that includes Roger," the family's pastor said.
Roger Self appeared before a Gaston County magistrate just before 7 p.m. Sunday was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He is being held without bond and is expected to make his first court appearance at 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

There seems to be a lack of mental health care in this country. Does anyone have any first-hand experience in it?
Yes, deal with the same thing repeatedly with my brother. Paranoia, violence, etc. then when he hits rock bottom and wants help (usually after he's done something to get himself in trouble) and we get him sent for an eval, he gets meds, feels better, leaves, stops taking meds and the cycle starts all over.

You can't force someone into treatment. I see people repeatedly 'Get them some help'. You have no idea how hard that really is.

My brother is in the "just got out of the psych' ward phase right now. I've had to completely cut him out of my life. I cannot deal with it anymore.

Alot of it is the meds, either you feel better and don't take them ,or you feel like they are just knocking you out and you cant function its a awful thing all the way around.

Does depression cause you to murder your family by such a dramatic display?
Is depression correct?
I read that a friend said something like, "medication didn't work, scripture and prayer didn't work." So it sounds like he tried medication. My question is, was he still on any psych meds, and if not, did he taper off of them properly? Because IMO depression doesn't make you homicidal, but certain medications, and especially suddenly stopping certain medications, can cause psychotic breaks.

Or he really was just a homicidal maniac.

The preacher says, in his televised statement made on behalf of the family, that Katelyn made the reservation, not him, because he was no longer comfortable around most people.

he ASKED HIMSELF!!! why do people not get this? DO SOMETHING!!
I get the feeling that they felt they could pray and love this away. A friend reported that when Self didn't leave his bed for days, this friend would visit daily and read scripture and pray.

http://www.gastongazette.com/news/20180520/faith-during-unspeakable-tragedy

"Both Philbeck and Rammell talked about how they attempted to help Self. They recommended he see a counselor, and then on another friend’s recommendation connected him with a psychiatrist at CaroMont Regional Medical Center.

Nothing seemed to help. Not the medicine. Not the reading of Scripture. Not even prayer.

Self would stay in bed for days. Philbeck visited him daily with both Scripture and prayer. Although he had been a church leader and Sunday school teacher, being around people now scared Self, both men said."

This sounds like Premeditated Murder to me!

It doesn’t matter how depressed he was, he was in the right mind to arrange the table he wanted the family seated at so he could carry out his mission of running his car through the building and into his family’s table.

Yes, I realize the reporting changed. I can't edit that post. I posted the change on post #27 page 2:
