Man who drove car into Gaston Co. restaurant, killing family members pleads guilty

Jan. 25, 2021
BESSEMER CITY, NC (WBTV) - A man accused of driving a vehicle into a Gaston County restaurant killing two and injuring multiple family members in May 2018 pleaded guilty to his charges in court Monday.

Roger Self pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder.

Before he was taken away, Self yelled at his family, “I love you, you’re my hero.”

Self’s sentencing has not been determined.
[.....]
He entered a guilty plea under the Alford plea, which essentially means he pleads guilty without specifically admitting to the guilt itself.

Oh now *this* is interesting. This would presumably see him spending time in regular prison instead of a mental health facility (which he certainly seems to need), right?

If anyone sees "when" he will be sentenced - please post! I can't access NC court sites - how about you @misgrn ?

2/24/20 Update: Court hearing dealt with procedural issues, mostly related to prosecutors having access to psychological records from defense experts expected to testify about Self’s mental health. Self’s attorney, Rick Beam, told District Attorney Locke Bell and Superior Court Judge Robert Ervin the person examining his client’s mental state has at least one more meeting scheduled with him, but that the report should be completed and available for review by mid April. Bell was agreeable to the timetable and Ervin set the next court hearing over the issue for April 27. Trial is scheduled in August (no date).

'God is done with me': Roger Self, convicted of killing his family members, awaits his fate

Court filings in the Roger Self murder case depict a deeply troubled man, both mentally and spiritually, in the weeks leading up to him driving an SUV through a restaurant, killing his daughter and daughter-in-law and seriously injuring several other family members.

Self, a prominent Dallas businessman before the horrific killings, pleaded guilty in January to two counts of second-degree murder, a move that allowed him to escape a possible life sentence without parole.

Starting Tuesday, a judge tasked with determining an appropriate punishment will begin to hear evidence in a case that garnered international attention. The judge will have to weigh factors such as Self's mental health at the time against the fact he killed two people who trusted him.

(snip)

Wife Diane Self and son Joshua Self suffered serious injuries, but have recovered from their physical wounds.

(snip)

"I didn't mean to hurt them," Self said as he pleaded guilty in court.

(snip)

Beam [Self's defense attorney] said in court that he would discuss Self's mental health issues at length during this sentencing phase of the case.

"He's still having some real issues dealing with what's going on," Beam said in January.

Members of Self's family have stood by him throughout the proceedings. They describe their family as faithful Christians.

What about the psychiatrist that was treating him prior to the incident?
Who were the “multiple doctors” that gave the “wrong medication” or different types that were not working for Mr Self? For three years or more?

A girlfriend at the beach?
