It was extremely vague for a press conference. I wonder if they held it just to keep everyone's attention where they wanted it. If they found anything incriminating anywhere, either under a trailer or in the woods, their best shot at removing it quietly would be to do it while everyone was focused on the press conference.

If there were a confession and a location given then the ME may have been on site for the entire search, just my opinion. Why I think there's more to this than the search is the way the white van left the scene with an escort with blue lights. Why would they do that if they were just leaving after finishing up? I think they have found something, may not be her but it's related to her.
I agree completely

Someone on Facebook raised a good question, have any of the neighbors reported the family asking if they'd seen her before they reported her missing to police?

Thought that was a good question. First thing I'd do is check outside and neighbors real quick. Then call.

That was a very vague press conference. I just couldn't finish it.
Called it a targeted and focused search.

I have to assume they tried to make it vague, for whatever reason(s) they have, but they could have coordinated it better. As the above statement says, they reference a targeted search yet the first guy blabbered about everyone should search areas they are very familiar with like around their house and property for any kind of signs or irregularities. That's way too inconsistent. He might as well have said they were conducting a targeted search but they believe the girl could be anywhere in a 6 state area. Probably should have asked him just to do the introduction of the FBI guy part of the show.
Has anyone said when the last time anyone aside from the two adults who live with Mariah last saw her? She could have been killed awhile back and nobody would know.

And shouldn’t the 10 year old have fairly reliable information about that?

I don't believe the sheriff holds much respect for the parent and her partner right now.

I agree with this. I'm sure he tried to be diplomatic about his answer as to their whereabouts, but he's probably chuckling to himself as if to say, "I couldn't give 2 rat behinds where they are right now."

Guaranteed, though, that someone has their eyes on them.

Something I wondered during the Shaylynn Ammerman case, and again during this case, was whether the US uses Family Liaison Officers in cases like this?

IMO - LE was vague enough about what they've found that they could possibly have found her. Motivation for not disclosing? Perhaps they actually don't know where the parents are. If the parents are suspect in disappearance, LE would want to be able to have them feel safe enough to make contact. Pure speculation, and of course they are innocent until proven guilty. My hinky meter is off the charts on this one because it really seems like LE is waffling around the truth and being evasive and neutral in their responses.

Good point!

From the body language the FBI agent looks very confident, he either aced his positive hand gestures 101 class or the net is closing in. I don’t think this presser was for the media’s/public’s benefit.

Scared to go grab a cup of coffee.

Okay Yellow Rose this is a bit off topic. As I read what you wrote about grabbing a cup of coffee, you avatar caught my eye and it just cracked me up. I think I needed that with all the stress of this PC that really told us nothing new..

They couldn't have found her because someone would have reported the Medical Examiner showing up.

New here and found you first with the Taylor Wright thread as she was a friend of mine. Excellent work to all of you sleuthers!

Wanted to provide a little info re Medical Examiner in this area. There isn’t a labeled ME vehicle like in other areas. Pediatric forensic cases would be sent to a different county for exam, and if called to the scene, the ME would arrive in a personal vehicle. Also, ME cases are transported via ambulance here.

Thank you for that information.

Welcome here, and want to say how sorry I am about your friend Taylor.

:welcome: and :tyou: for the info.

By here, do you mean NC?

I thought that an ME, or their representative, had to go to the scene of an unexplained death before a body could be removed?

It depends on the circumstances. Nowadays, most ME offices have Death Scene Investigators who will appear at the scene of the crime to collect and document the body, take pics, collect evidence that could be handy for the ME to have (e.g. bullet casings, empty drug bottles, the rope in a hanging, etc). ME's are not really trained to be on-site, they are pathologists, not evidence technicians.

This presser wasn't needed, imo.

Actually what was said that was new is very important.... Mariah more than likely wasn't abducted and that the searching now will probably remain closer to her home. That seems pretty important information to me.....

yep they're already planning another pc. imo they found her earlier

There has never been one case in which something like that has occurred. Never. To fool the public to that extent would erode the public's confidence in the department in an irreparable way.

I think we knew that already.
